SEYCHELLES
Seychelles 115 granite and coral islands extend from between 4 and 10 degrees south of the equator and lie between 480km and 1600km from the east coast of Africa in the western Indian Ocean. This Indian Ocean republic occupies a land area of 455 km² and an Exclusive Economic Zone of 1.4 million km². It represents an archipelago of timeless beauty, tranquillity and harmony that is famous for its world-beating beaches and for its great diversity which rolls from lush forests down to the warm azure ocean. Of these 115 islands, 41 Inner Islands constitute the oldest mid-oceanic granite islands on earth while a further 74 form the 5 groups of low-lying coral atolls and reef islets that are the Outer Islands. Seychelles is home to no less than two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the legendary Vallée de Mai on Praslin where the wondrously shaped Coco-de-mer nut grows high on ancient palms and fabled Aldabra, the worlds largest raised coral atoll, first seen by early Arab seafarers of the 9th century AD

TODAY IN HISTORY - National Day of Seychelles - 18 June 2010
Today, June 18, is the National Day of Seychelles, commemorating the adoption of its constitution in 1993. Seychelles is an Indian Ocean archipelago northeast of Madagascar. It is only natural home to the coco de mer, a rare palm tree that has the longest leaves and the largest and heaviest seeds in the plant kingdom. These amazing trees can be found in the country's islandof Praslin on the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve, a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. Another UNESCO site is the Aldabra Atoll, the biggest raised coral atoll on Earth and habitat to over 150000 giant tortoises. We wish a memorable Independence Day to the friendly citizens of Seychelles.

Tokelau Warrior Dance for Climate Change Awareness at Smithsonian
The inhabited coral atolls of Kiribati, Tokelau, and Tuvalu are already experiencing rising sea levels as a result of climate change. In front of the Giant Squid exhibit, dancers from Tokelau provided an impromptu Warrior Dance. The dancers and musicians were in the US to demonstrate their deep connection to nature and their ancestral past and raise awareness about climate change. They come to inspire us all to be better stewards of our shared planet. See: waterisrising.org and http

Niue Bro by Warwick Murray and his Blukulele
This song was written in Niue, after nearly kicking the bucket on a jog from Avatele to Alofi at midday, it is based largely, well partly, okay, not at all, on true stories. Niue is one of the most remote and beautiful parts of the planet and is the world's smallest country in terms of population. Yet it is diverse and its people resourceful. When Polynesian seafarers arrived at the raised coral atoll many centuries ago they commented that they didn't know the island and therefore it was "new eh, bro". That is how it got its name, maybe....

Kiribati.
Kiribati / KIRR-i-bas /The native people of Kiribati are called I-Kiribati. The word Kiribati is the local spelling of the word Gilbert and the original name of this British colony was the Gilbert Islands. The indigenous format of the name was adopted when independence was gained in 1979. Ethnically, the I-Kiribati are Micronesians. Recent archaeological evidence indicates that Austronesians originally settled the islands thousands of years ago. Around the 14th century, Fijians and Tongans invaded the islands, thus complicating the ethnic range; people of Polynesian ancestry further diversified the ethnic typologies. Intermarriage among all ancestral groups, however, has led to a population reasonably homogeneous in appearance and traditions. The people of Kiribati speak an Oceanic language called "Gilbertese". Although English is the official language, it is not used very often outside the island capital of Tarawa. It is more likely that English is mixed in its use with Gilbertese. Older generations of I-Kiribati tend to use more complicated versions of the language. Christianity is the major religion, having been introduced by missionaries in the 19th century. The population is predominantly Roman Catholic, although a substantial portion of the population is Congregationalist Protestant. Many other Protestant denominations, including more evangelical types, are also represented. The Bahá'í religion also exists in Kiribati, along with Jehovah's Witnesses and the Church ...

2012 Silver Kiribati $10 Coin
Today I am showing you a new release 2012 Kiribati silver coin. The theme of the coin is "We Will Remember" It is common for Australian companies and mints to use small countries currency denominations. It would be much cheaper to pay these cash strapped small countries a royalty than to pay the Australian Government full legal tender value to use our currency. More about Kiribati: Kiribati, officially the Republic of Kiribati, is an island nation located in the central tropical Pacific Ocean. The permanent population is just over 100000 (2011), and the island nation is composed of 32 atolls and one raised coral island, dispersed over 3.5 million square kilometres Kiribati became independent from the United Kingdom in 1979. It is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the IMF and the World Bank, and became a full member of the United Nations in 1999. Link to the mint: www.macquariemint.com

Nancy Knowlton (Smithsonian) Part 1: Coral Reefs: Past, Present and Future
www.ibioseminars.org Dr. Knowlton begins her talk by explaining what coral are and how they build reefs. Using many spectacular photographs, Knowlton illustrates the decline of most of the world's coral reefs over the past 30-40 years. She describes the effects of direct destruction such as dynamite fishing, as well as the more indirect, but equally catastrophic, effects of invasive species, excessive nutrients due to terrestrial run off, and ocean warming. She ends on a more hopeful note, showing how stringent conservation efforts in some places have resulted in healthier, more resilient reefs. In Part 2, Knowlton talks about the phenomenal biodiversity found in coral communities and why this diversity is important to reef health. She explains how difficult it is to classify corals and the many organisms with which they co-exist, and how modern genetic methods are proving much of the traditional taxonomy to be wrong. The Census of Marine Life project, of which Knowlton is a partner, is striving to find standardized and easily automated methods to take a global census of the biodiversity of coral reefs and results so far suggest the diversity is truly enormous.

89 Halligen Islands · Germany
Wehave selected 100 unique places on Earth that are projected to undergo profound changes within the next few generations. We based our selection of the 100 places on the 4th Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Simply by drawing attention to the beauty of these places, 100 Places to Remember Before they Disappear creates an argument to preserve them. The 100 Places we have chosen to highlight, and the people who live in them, are in serious danger because of rising sea levels, rising temperatures and extreme weather events triggered by climate change. Among ambassadors are Joss Stone, Desmond Tutu for more info visit www.100places.com - Halligen Islands · Germany Living on the Seas Terms The inhabitants of the ten small Halligen Islands off the north coast of Germany spent centuries adapting to the moods of the sea around them. The low-lying islands, which have been shaped by the rising tides of the North Sea, still retain their harsh, unspoiled nature. The name Halligen comes from the Celtic word Hal, which means salt. It refers to the occasional flooding of the islands when salty sea water penetrates far inland. This phenomenon has created a distinctive ecosystem, with fertile salty meadows where sea lavender blossoms in summer, and plants and animals that depend on the influx of salt water. The islanders ancestors constructed mounds several metres high called warften and then built their dwellings and other buildings on top of ...

3. Nuclear Experiments
Environmental Politics and Law (EVST 255) To illustrate the linkages among national security, secrecy, and environmental quality, Professor Wargo describes the Atomic Energy Commission's nuclear tests in the 1950s. The Atomic Energy Commission collected data on the spread of radionuclides from the nuclear tests, and discovered that the radionuclides were circulating around the world. This process of discovery raised issues regarding ways to manage risks to the population while both continuing the nuclear tests and keeping them secret for national security reasons. 00:00 - Chapter 1.
