Unreported World: Benin - Voodoo Children
In the tiny West African country of Benin, voodoo is trapping thousands in poverty and causing some families to sell their children into slavery.
Benin is the home of voodoo. The ancient animist belief was taken by slaves from this tiny West African state to Haiti and New Orleans. Benin is the only country in the world that officially recognises voodoo as a state religion, affording it the same national status as Christianity or Islam.
But, as Unreported World reveals, voodoo is trapping thousands in poverty and causing some families to sell their children in to slavery.

Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite that is transmitted to people through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. Symptoms of malaria are: high fever, chills, abdominal pain, headaches, tiredness and fatigue. If anyone experiences any of these symptoms, it is important to go the nearest medical facility.
Malaria can cause serious health complications, especially in infants and young children. To prevent malaria it is important to avoid being bitten by the mosquito. The malaria mosquito usually bites in the evening until sunrise, that is, from dusk until dawn. Inside the home you can protect your family by using mosquito nets placed around the beds or sleeping areas. A very effective preventive measure is to install plastic or metal mosquito screens on windows and doors. You can apply insecticide sprays for use inside the home. You can also use battery operated or electric diffusers with pads impregnated with insecticide.
Outside of your home, eradicate weeds and shrubs around the house and remove used car tires. Pick up trash by placing it in bags or in tightly closed containers to be picked up by the waste collection service. If that service is not available, garbage can be burned or buried. You should avoid stagnant water accumulated in containers or puddles because mosquitoes can breed there. Collect empty bottles and other containers and place them face down so they do not hold water. Ensure that containers of drinking water are covered and tightly closed. Let's all work,children and adults alike, to keep the malaria mosquito out!
The video will soon be available in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and there are over a dozen more language versions that we are currently working on for release in the coming months. Funds are needed to add new language voice overlays so more groups around the planet can gain access to these educational materials.

Seventy percent of people in the West African state of Benin live in the countryside. Most of them don't have any electricity. North of the capital Porto Novo, the French organization Geres is overseeing a project that makes life a bit easier, by helping people to process their food with the help of machines. The project is primarily targeted at women in the Zou region, who have got together to form cooperatives. Geres has set up 35 plants where women can process their foodstuffs. As diesel is expensive, the machines are run on biodiesel.

At home it is very important to protect yourself through the proper installation of mosquito nets around your beds or sleeping areas. There are many kinds of bed-nets, so please install them according to local recommendations. You need to make sure that bed-nets cover the entire bed area and that there are no mosquitoes present inside the net. It is very important to check periodically for holes or damaged areas in the net that may allow mosquitoes to enter. Impregnated bed-nets are more effective because they have been treated with an insecticide that repels the mosquitoes or kills them on contact. Impregnated bed-nets come in a variety of colors, including blue or green. Use of bed-nets every night, children and adults alike, helps to keep the malaria mosquito out!

World Voodoo Festival
On January 10th in Ouidah, Benin (West Africa), the World Voodoo Festival takes place.
This is the most important gathering and public exposure of the Voodoo religion. It is a unique occasion to approach Voodoo, a religion whose practices are generally secret otherwise.
A grand feast takes place at the beach. Several traditional dancers exhibit themselves in front of of tribal kings and courts coming from several West African countries. Sacrifices are made on the shore, that are related to the slave trade that took place from this coast to the Americas from 1500 until mid 1800.
During the nights preceding the Voodoo festival, electricity is cut in Ouidah during the night. In the night, the Woros dance naked in the streets of the town, playing music with traditional instruments. The Woros are young men initiated to Voodoo. It is forbidden, and not recommended to watch them, particularly for women. However, it is possible to submit oneself to a Voodoo initiation in the days preceding the festival, and to become a Woro.
