Deptford (
/ˈdɛtfəd/) is a district of south London, England, on the south bank of the River Thames. It is named after a ford of the River Ravensbourne, and from the mid 16th to the late 19th century was home to Deptford Dockyard, the first of the Royal Navy Dockyards.
Deptford and the docks are associated with the knighting of Sir Francis Drake by Queen Elizabeth I aboard the Golden Hind, the legend of Sir Walter Raleigh laying down his cape for Elizabeth, Captain James Cook's third voyage aboard Resolution, and the mysterious murder of Christopher Marlowe in a house along Deptford Strand.
Though Deptford began as two small communities, one at the ford, the other a fishing village on The Thames, Deptford's history and population has been mainly associated with the docks established by Henry VIII.
The two communities grew together and flourished while the docks were the main administrative centre of the Royal Navy, and a few grand houses like Sayes Court, home to diarist John Evelyn, and Stone House on Lewisham Way were erected. The area declined as first the Royal Navy moved out and then the commercial docks declined until the last dock, Convoys Wharf, closed in 2000.

Lewisham /lˈʊɪʃəm/ is a district in South London, England, located in the London Borough of Lewisham. It is situated 6.2 miles (10.0 km) south-east of Charing Cross. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London.
It is most likely to have been founded by a pagan Jute, Leof, who settled (by burning his boat) near St Mary's Church (Ladywell) where the ground was drier, in the 6th century. As to the etymology of the name, Daniel Lysons (1796) wrote:
"In the most ancient Saxon records this place is called Levesham, that is, the house among the meadows; leswe, læs, læse, or læsew, in the Saxon, signifies a meadow, and ham, a dwelling. It is now written, as well in parochial and other records as in common usage, Lewisham." "Leofshema" was an important settlement at the confluence of the rivers Quaggy (from Farnborough) and Ravensbourne (Caesar's Well, Keston), so the village expanded north into the wetter area as drainage techniques improved. In the mid-seventeenth century, then-vicar of Lewisham, Abraham Colfe, built a grammar school, primary school and six almshouses for the inhabitants. On 5 September 1711 William Legge, the Earl of Dartmouth became the (hereditary) Viscount Lewisham The village of Lewisham was originally centred further south around the parish church of St Mary, towards the present site of University Hospital Lewisham. The centre migrated north with the coming of the North Kent railway line to Dartford in 1849, encouraging commuter housing. Lewisham was administratively part of Kent until 1889, and formed part of the Metropolitan Borough of Lewisham in the County of London until 1965.

Alan Igbon
Alan Igbon (born in Hulme, Manchester, England, 29 May 1960) is a British actor.
Of West African and Irish background, Igbon has been a familiar jobbing actor since his teenage years when he took the background part of inmate Meakin in the 1979 cinematic re-make of the controversial borstal film Scum, whose character memorably launched an emotional tirade against senior members of staff after the suicide of another convict.
Igbon later starred as Loggo in Boys from the Blackstuff, a BBC television drama about a group of unemployed men in Liverpool during the recession-ravaged early 1980s, written by Alan Bleasdale. He also took a leading role in the sitcom The Front Line, playing the dreadlocked Sheldon, alongside Paul Barber as his police officer brother Malcolm, and had a role in the film Water (1985).
Other staple programmes in which Igbon featured include cop show The Professionals, Bleasdale drama G.B.H., medical serial Doctors and Channel 4 soap opera Brookside. He had a supporting role in the third series of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet as a bodyguard and stooge to the programme's main villain (played by Boys From The Blackstuff co-star Michael Angelis) and then took a temporary role in ITV soap Coronation Street, playing the estranged father of regular character Jason Grimshaw.

Beverly Michaels
Beverly Michaels (December 28, 1928 – June 9, 2007) was an American "B"-movie actress and cheesecake-model of the 1950s.
Born on December 28, 1928 in New York City, Michaels knew at an early age that she wanted a career in show biz. She acted in plays in High Shcool before moving to Hollywood to pursue her career.
Arriving in Hollywood in 1948, Michaels standing at 5' 9", quickly found modeling work, in which she was mistakenly billed as "Beverley Michaels". Later the same year, she had a brief role in the film East Side, West Side, and two years later had a minor role in the film version of Three Little Words.
In 1951, Michaels caught the attention of independent film director and producer Hugo Haas, with whom she began to have a romantic affair. Haas showcased Michaels' raw talent and raspy voice in the 1951 film noir Pickup. The film opened to an unknown brief release, and, in what few theaters showed it, the film was a secondary feature. As a result, the film was a tremendous box office flop. Afterward, Haas put Michaels in photo sessions in order to promote her.

Judge Moody in October 2009 announced that he will seek the Democratic Party's nomination for the Texas Supreme Court. He intends to use a blimp to travel around the state and advertise his campaign.
Judge Moody was the Democratic nominee for Place Two on the Supreme Court of Texas in the November 2006 general election. His opponent was the incumbent, Justice Don Willett. Judge Moody sought to become the first El Pasoan to be elected to statewide office in Texas as well as the only Democrat on the Court, whose current membership is all Republican. In his campaign, he walked across Texas, which drew extensive press coverage. Moody was defeated in the general election.

Black British is a term used to describe British people of black African descent, especially those of Afro-Caribbean background. The term has been used from the 1950s to refer to Black people from former British colonies in the West Indies (i.e. the New Commonwealth) and Africa, who are residents of the United Kingdom and consider themselves British. Others are also from former French-speaking colonies in Africa such as Senegal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (which was Belgian), and many of the Black Africans in Britain still speak French as well as their own native languages.
The term 'black' has historically had a number of applications as a racial and political label, and may be used in a wider socio-political context, to encompass a broader range of non-European ethnic minority populations in Britain, though this is a controversial and non-standard definition.

Brian Bovell
Brian Bovell (born 26 October 1959, London) is an English actor.
He has appeared regularly on television since 1980, as well as featuring in the cult film Babylon released the same year. He has also appeared in the play Where There Is Darkness in 1981, winning the 1982 London Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actor of 1981 for his performance. Bovell starred with Gary Olsen in the 1986 TV series Prospects about two men in the Docklands trying their hand at anything to make a "few bob".
The feature films he has appeared in include Love Actually, Shoreditch, All or Nothing, Sorted and Secrets and Lies. Some of his most famous roles have been DC Rob Thatcher in The Bill, Jez Littlewood in Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, and Detective Andy Sharp in My Dad's the Prime Minister.
He portrayed Leo Valentine in Hollyoaks from 2006 to 2010 and voices Uncle Hairy on the children's programme Humf on Nick Jr.

Brinsley Forde
Brinsley Allan Forde (born 16 October 1953, London) is best known as a founding member of the reggae band, Aswad and as a child actor in the children's television series, Here Come the Double Deckers (1970–71).
Forde appeared as Herman in two episodes of the sitcom Please Sir!. He appeared as Wesley in the feature film of the same name in 1971. He appeared in the James Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever and the television programme, The Georgian House. In 1980 he starred in Babylon (directed by Franco Rosso), as Blue, a disenfranchised youth who becomes a deejay on a South London reggae soundsystem.[citation needed]
Forde presented VH1 Soul Vibrations, BBC's Ebony & Ebony on the road, and was one of the radio presenters to open the BBC's first digital station6 Music with his radio show, Lively Up Yourself and Dub Bashment. Forde can be heard presenting the radio documentaries Behind The Smile: the real life of Bob Marley & Island Rock to mark the 40th anniversary of Jamaican independence.
A two-time Grammy Award nominee, Forde scored a British number one chart hit with "Don't Turn Around" in 1988. Followed by another top 20 chart hit, "Give A Little Love". The band continued to feature in the top 20 on the British charts with the album, Distant Thunder, and the "On and On", "Next to You" & "Shine".[citation needed]

Dennis Bovell
Dennis Bovell (born 1953, Saint Peter, Barbados, West Indies) is a reggae guitarist, bass player and record producer. He was a member of the British reggae band Matumbi, and released dub-reggae records under his own name as well as the pseudonym 'Blackbeard'. He is most widely known for his decades-spanning collaborations with Linton Kwesi Johnson.
Bovell moved with his family to South London at the age of twelve. He became immersed in Jamaican culture, particularly dub music, and set up his own Jah Sufferer sound system. Running the sound system brought trouble from the police and Bovell was imprisoned for six months on remand, but was later released on appeal. Bovell was friends at school with future rock musicians including keyboardist Nick Straker and record producer Tony Mansfield, both of whom later worked with Bovell.
Bovell also worked as an engineer at Dip Records, the precursor to the Lovers Rock label, and he was a key figure in the early days of the lovers rock genre. He is also known for attempting to fuse disco rhythms with reggae, most notably with the hit song "Silly Games" by Janet Kay.

Gary Whelan
Gary Whelan (born 1953, Dublin, Ireland) is an Irish actor, known for his work on British television.
Although born in Ireland, Gary relocated to London when he was ten years old.
He has portrayed several roles in the police force. He starred in the BBC soap opera EastEnders twice, once as DS Terry Rich from 1985 to 1987, and later as DS Paul Kemmit, in the spin-off EastEnders: Perfectly Frank in 2003. He played DS Terry Amson in Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren in 1991 and he played D.I. Harry Haines in the ITV drama, The Bill in 1992–1995, among others.
He also played Brendan Kearney, the village schoolmaster in Ballykissangel (1996–2001).
On stage Whelan has played Horatio in Hamlet and Salisbury in Richard II. He has also appeared in two of the Pink Panther movies and his other film credits include Cry Freedom, Paper Marriage, Moll Flanders and Michael Collins. Recent film roles were O’Connor in Villa of Roses and Declan Murphy in A Flight of Fancy.
Among Whelan's other television credits are Glenroe, Angels, Hideaway, Minder, The Royal and Kavanagh QC. Gary has also been seen in the roles of Sam Tilley in Uncle Silas and Charlie Pearch in In Deep. In 2005 he appeared in the BBC hospital drama Casualty@Holby City and in 2006 he starred in Channel 4's Goldplated.

Jeffry "Jeff" Wayne, born in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, is a musician best known for Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds, his musical version of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. Wayne has written approximately 3,000 advertising jingles in the 1970s which appeared on television in the United Kingdom, notably a Gordon's Gin commercial which was covered by The Human League. Karl Howman
Karl Howman (born in Woolwich, London on 13 December 1952) is an English actor and also a British voice-over artist.
He is well known but notable to many television viewers for his work as Jacko in the mid-1980s and early-1990s BBC TV sitcom Esmonde and Larbey's Brush Strokes and as the title character in the series Mulberry (also by Esmonde and Larbey).
However, Howman first worked with the two comedy scriptwriters on the final series of Thames TV sitcom Get Some In! in 1978 replacing fellow English actor Robert Lindsay (whom, left after the first 4 series to star in Citizen Smith at the BBC) in the role of Jakey Smith.
He also starred in the episode "Shadow" in the BBC series Blake's 7 and in the episode All About Scoring, Innit? in the critically acclaimed drama, Minder, playing Danny Varrow. He replaced Peter Davison in the BBC Radio 4 school-based comedy drama series King Street Junior when Davison left after the first two series. King Sounds
Roy Livingstone Plummer (born c.1948), better known as King Sounds, is a Jamaican reggae musician who released several albums from late 1970s onwards.
Born Roy Livingstone Plummer, c.1948 in Saint Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica, King Sounds emigrated to the UK in 1964, having already made some recordings in Jamaica. Known simply as 'Sounds', he acted as an MC for reggae shows, and impressed Alton Ellis so much that Ellis gave him the name 'King Sounds'. His debut single was "Rock and Roll Lullaby", released in 1975. He formed the Grove Music collective in Ladbroke Grove with Mikey Campbell. He performed regularly with artists such as Aswad and at the Notting Hill Carnival, his band the Israelites featuring Clifton "Bigga" Morrison, Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton, and Michael "Bammi" Rose. After two albums on Grove Music and his own KSI label, he was signed by Island Records for the 1981 album Forward. He released further albums into the 1990s on his own King & I label.

Mark Monero
Mark Monero (born 1968 in London, England) is a British actor. He has had various roles including parts in Babylon, Wilt, Prayer for the Dying, Sid and Nancy and remains best known for his role as Steve Elliot in the BBC soap opera EastEnders (1992 - 1996), although he has appeared in many other television and theatre roles.
Monero began acting when introduced to Anna Scher's theatre school in Islington, London, in the late 70s. One of Monero's earliest roles was in the seminal 1980s film Babylon in which he plays the brother of Brinsley Ford's character "Blue". Monero started with some early roles in TV serials such as Play for Today (1980), Bless Me Father (1981) and a role in the BBC children's programme Grange Hill (1983). He later went on to secure the role of Woody in the popular detective series Lovejoy (1986). Later he had a role in Dempsey & Makepeace (1986) and a part in the film Sid and Nancy, a biography of punk rocker Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols. During this period Monero also appeared as part of the comedy duo Shift and Zed with Gary Beadle, in Smiley Cultures Club Mix program.

Mel Smith
Melvin Kenneth "Mel" Smith (born 3 December 1952) is an English comedian, writer, film director, producer and actor. He is most famous for his work on the sketch comedy shows Not the Nine O'Clock News and Alas Smith and Jones along with his comedy partner Griff Rhys Jones.
Smith's father, Kenneth, was born in Tow Law, County Durham, and worked at a coal mine during the Second World War looking after the pit ponies. After the war he moved to London, and married Smith's mother, whose parents owned a greengrocer's store in Chiswick, West London. When the government legalised high street betting, he turned the shop into the first betting shop in Chiswick.
Smith was born and brought up in Chiswick, over the shop. He was educated at Hogarth Primary School, Chiswick and the private Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith and New College, Oxford.
While at Oxford University he produced The Tempest, and this led to his joining the Royal Court Theatre production team in London, and then Bristol Old Vic. He was also associate director of Sheffield's Crucible Theatre for two years. Later, he directed a theatre production of "Not in Front of the Audience".[citation needed]

Kisses Over Babylon is the second installment of SALVO!, a 12-part music video series from Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros. Kisses picks up in the same desert wasteland world, ravaged by drought. Edward is arrested by two Minors (police from Ursa Minor) for the murder of his own father, and taken to a water-labor prison. There he reunites with Brother, his long-ago friend, and rallies the prisoners to a frenzied prison break.

If you imagine that the whole world is a house, then the fabled, toy death would be dwelling in the basement, which is also part of the house that God built. Under the basement, though, there would be a trench that not God, Father of the preset Father, dug, but a cursed, unknown old man, who had died before the Son was born.
Since a time before memory existed, the cadaverous organism of Foredeath has been residing in this tomb, and even God has no power over it.
There are no words to describe the blasphemy inflicted upon people, committed in that inconceivable absolute darkness, with not a single bright atom.
Fyodorov understood at once and forever that everybody would die, and that he, Fyodor, would also die, and this is the worst thing that could ever happen.
Alphabet blocks with multi-colored letters revealed to Fyodorov the awful mystery. When his Babylon made out of wooden blocks toppled into pieces, the letters formed the Eternal Word. And the Word was uttered, and it was the truth about death.
No adult would ever bear the burden of such a revelation. Fyodorov managed to compose himself, he withstood, and only occasionally would he burst into tears, and then…nobody could calm him down, neither his mother and grandmother, nor the doctors with their hallucinatory medicine.
Human life is like running through a minefield, where mines are planted not only in the ground, but also in the clouds, beetles, flies, grasshoppers, mist, in the rustling of grass stems or in the ringing from faraway bell towers.
Everywhere were many special traps, and though not all of them were instantly fatal, each one brought the end closer.
The traps were guarded by the Beasts. Fyodorov learned about the Beasts from the prayers his grandmother would sometimes read, asking to be saved from the Aphid and from the mental Wolf.
Fyodorov himself never saw the Beasts, but he imagined them very clearly. Once you might be caught off and not notice that the Mental Wolf had devoured the former meaning of things, and the Aphid had infected you with the deadly decay and turned you into Carrion, which is the Sin.
If a man is full of sinful Carrion, he dies. What made Fyodorov different from other people was that he learned to create antidote rituals – acts, supported by a short prayer, as dictated by the blocks.
To leave the apartment safely, Fyodorov would stroke the door knob five times and say Rock-a-bye, baby. If a stranger or an old woman with a poodle appears, he would return home, walking backwards. He would run into the kitchen, touch the table, press his cheek to the fridge, and only after all that did he stroke the door knob… by no means saying “Rock-a-bye, baby” because the baby is not rocking anymore. Instead, you should say: “Riddance, riddance – good riddance.”
At some point Fyodorov stopped going outdoors. At first he allowed himself to look out of the window, but soon he closed the curtains forever, to limit the influx of images.
The Beasts were not dozing. The Wolf gobbled the meaning of bread and water – the last bits of Fyodorov’s poor rations, and the Aphid turned them into Carrion immediately.
Then the fatal moment came, when Fyodorov didn’t manage to reach for the blocks. The Mental Wolf and the Aphid were patiently waiting for their prey…
… But the essence is unknown to The Beasts. In Fyodorov’d end is hidden the great defeat of Foredeath, because Foredeath has no right to him. Of all living creatures he is the only one not contaminated by the cadaverous organism of carrion, but instead filled with the Eternal Word.
And when Fyodorov ‘s spirit leaves him, a new realm of death will expand in the black emptiness left behind. This new realm will be stretched as a net over the former, and it will catch everyone. From then on everybody will be dying into Fyodorov’s death. Nobody knows what it will exactly feel like, but even if we are reincarnated as simple alphabet blocks with coloured letters, at least no one will ever get us or trouble us – not the mad old man, not Father, the Mental Wolf nor the Aphid.

Kisses Over Babylon is the second installment of SALVO!, a 12-part music video series from Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros. Kisses picks up in the same desert wasteland world, ravaged by drought. Edward is arrested by two Minors (police from Ursa Minor) for the murder of his own father, and taken to a water-labor prison. Kisses Over Babylon is the second installment of SALVO!, a 12-part music video series from Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros. Kisses picks up in the same desert wasteland world, ravaged by drought. Edward is arrested by two Minors (police from Ursa Minor) for the murder of his own father, and taken to a water-labor prison. There he reunites with Brother, his long-ago friend, and rallies the prisoners to a frenzied prison break.

If you imagine that the whole world is a house, then the fabled, toy death would be dwelling in the basement, which is also part of the house that God built. Under the basement, though, there would be a trench that not God, Father of the preset Father, dug, but a cursed, unknown old man, who had died before the Son was born.
Since a time before memory existed, the cadaverous organism of Foredeath has been residing in this tomb, and even God has no power over it.
There are no words to describe the blasphemy inflicted upon people, committed in that inconceivable absolute darkness, with not a single bright atom.
Fyodorov understood at once and forever that everybody would die, and that he, Fyodor, would also die, and this is the worst thing that could ever happen.
Alphabet blocks with multi-colored letters revealed to Fyodorov the awful mystery. When his Babylon made out of wooden blocks toppled into pieces, the letters formed the Eternal Word. And the Word was uttered, and it was the truth about death.
No adult would ever bear the burden of such a revelation. Fyodorov managed to compose himself, he withstood, and only occasionally would he burst into tears, and then…nobody could calm him down, neither his mother and grandmother, nor the doctors with their hallucinatory medicine.
Human life is like running through a minefield, where mines are planted not only in the ground, but also in the clouds, beetles, flies, grasshoppers, mist, in the rustling of grass stems or in the ringing from faraway bell towers.
Everywhere were many special traps, and though not all of them were instantly fatal, each one brought the end closer.
The traps were guarded by the Beasts. Fyodorov learned about the Beasts from the prayers his grandmother would sometimes read, asking to be saved from the Aphid and from the mental Wolf.
Fyodorov himself never saw the Beasts, but he imagined them very clearly. Once you might be caught off and not notice that the Mental Wolf had devoured the former meaning of things, and the Aphid had infected you with the deadly decay and turned you into Carrion, which is the Sin.
If a man is full of sinful Carrion, he dies. What made Fyodorov different from other people was that he learned to create antidote rituals – acts, supported by a short prayer, as dictated by the blocks.
To leave the apartment safely, Fyodorov would stroke the door knob five times and say Rock-a-bye, baby. If a stranger or an old woman with a poodle appears, he would return home, walking backwards. He would run into the kitchen, touch the table, press his cheek to the fridge, and only after all that did he stroke the door knob… by no means saying “Rock-a-bye, baby” because the baby is not rocking anymore. Instead, you should say: “Riddance, riddance – good riddance.”
At some point Fyodorov stopped going outdoors. At first he allowed himself to look out of the window, but soon he closed the curtains forever, to limit the influx of images.
The Beasts were not dozing. The Wolf gobbled the meaning of bread and water – the last bits of Fyodorov’s poor rations, and the Aphid turned them into Carrion immediately.
Then the fatal moment came, when Fyodorov didn’t manage to reach for the blocks. The Mental Wolf and the Aphid were patiently waiting for their prey…
… But the essence is unknown to The Beasts. In Fyodorov’d end is hidden the great defeat of Foredeath, because Foredeath has no right to him. Of all living creatures he is the only one not contaminated by the cadaverous organism of carrion, but instead filled with the Eternal Word.
And when Fyodorov ‘s spirit leaves him, a new realm of death will expand in the black emptiness left behind. This new realm will be stretched as a net over the former, and it will catch everyone. From then on everybody will be dying into Fyodorov’s death. Nobody knows what it will exactly feel like, but even if we are reincarnated as simple alphabet blocks with coloured letters, at least no one will ever get us or trouble us – not the mad old man, not Father, the Mental Wolf nor the Aphid.

Babylon is a 1980 film that depicts the struggles of a Black British working class musician. It stars Brinsley Forde of the reggae band, Aswad[1] . It was co-written by Martin Stellman (writer of Quadrophenia) and Franco Rosso who also directed it. It also starred Karl Howman and Trevor Laird. Music was scored by Dennis Bovell.
Brinsley Forde plays a Deptford garage-hand by day and a disco-dispenser by night. The film follows him as he loses his job as a car mechanic (Mel Smith in a cameo as his racist boss), gets beaten up by racist police and falsely charged, forced to go on the run, falling out with his girlfriend and finally stabbing a racist neighbour in anger and frustration. The film finishes with a posse of policemen smashing down the doors of a music hall.
Babylon was filmed on the streets of Lewisham and Brixton, London.
The film revolves around racism from police and thugs, violence against blacks, poverty and disillusion and lack of opportunities.
Songs are by Aswad, Johnny Clarke, and Jeff Wayne (who wrote the musical version of War Of The Worlds), among others.
Produced by Diversity Music, National Film Finance Corporation, Chrysalis Group and Lee Electric (Lighting), the film is regarded as a classic.[2]
