Armenian Encyclopedia
The Armenian Encyclopedia (Armenian: Հայկական Հանրագիտարան; AE) publishing house was established in 1967 as a department of the Institute of History of the Armenian Academy of Sciences under the presidency of Viktor Hambardzumyan (1908–1996), co-edited by Abel Simonyan (1922–1994) and Makich Arzumanyan (1919–1988). In 1988–1999 the editor-in-chief was Konstantin Khudaverdyan (1929–1999) and since 1999 Hovhannes Aivazyan. It produced the Soviet Armenian Encyclopedia (also rendered Armenian Soviet Encyclopedia; Armenian: Հայկական Սովետական Հանրագիտարան, Haykakan sovetakan hanragitaran, Russian: Армя́нская сове́тская энциклопе́дия, Armyanskaya sovetskaya entsiklopediya АСЭ) from 1974–1986.
The AE publishing house also edited a children's encyclopedia, Who is it? What is it? (Armenian: Ո՞վ է, Ի՞նչ է) in 4 volumes (1984–87), the Russian-Armenian Polytechnical Dictionary (1988) and a Traveler's Encyclopedia (1990). Since Armenian independence (1991) publications include titles on topics of such current-day issues such as the Nagorno-Karabakh War, the Armenian Question and the Armenian diaspora.

Great Soviet Encyclopedia
The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (GSE) (Russian: Большая советская энциклопедия, or БСЭ Bolshaya sovetskaya entsiklopediya) is one of the largest Russian-language encyclopedias. published by the Soviet state from 1926 to 1990, and again since 2002 (under the name Bolshaya Rossiyskaya entsiklopediya or Great Russian Encyclopedia).
Origins
The idea of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia emerged in 1923 on the initiative of Otto Schmidt, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In early 1924 Schmidt worked with a group which included Mikhail Pokrovsky, (rector of the Institute of Red Professors), Nikolai Meshcheryakov (Head of Gosizdat, the State Publishing House), Valery Bryusov (poet), Veniamin Kagan (mathematician) and Konstantin Kuzminsky to draw up a proposal which was agreed by the in April 1924. Also involved was Anatoly Lunacharsky, Commissar of Enlightenment (Narkompros), who had previously been involved with a proposal by Alexander Bogdanov and Maxim Gorky to produce a Workers' Encyclopedia.

The Soviet Amphibious Spearhead | PT-76 (part 1)
The PT-76 is a Soviet amphibious light tank designed in 1948 which saw service from 1952 up until its gradual retirement from 1967 onwards, partly replaced by the more versatile BMP-1 APC. Characterised by a wide hull and water jet propulsion, the PT-76 offered excellent amphibious capabilities. It was, however, plagued by a large silhouette, weak armor protection and an underpowered 76 mm gun. Despite these flaws, the PT-76 enjoyed a long service life within the Soviet and Russian armed forces, which only placed it into its reserves in 2006. Comparable to other Soviet Cold War vehicles, it has seen combat in several wars and is still in use within smaller armies. Russia is attempting to replace them with BMP-3F amphibious APCs. As part of our continuing collaboration with Northwestern University's Department of Art Theory and Practice, the Graham is pleased to host Joshua Simon, who will present The Kids Want Communism, a yearlong program of exhibitions marking 99 years since the October Revolution, which he initiated in collaboration with State of Concept Athens, Free/Slow University of Warsaw, Tranzit Prague, Skuc gallery in Ljubljana, the Visual Culture Research Center in Kiev, and MoBY-Museums of Bat Yam. The talk will outline how the communist horizon and real existing socialism can inform our understanding of the current social and cultural, political, and economic realities we are facing with the implosion of the neoliberal order. Simon's research in the past several years has been focused on notions of materiality and subjectivity, therefore, this talk will move between animism and productivism, commodity fetish and debt economy, double negation and metabolism, shock work and the dividual.
Joshua Simon is director and chief curator at MoBY-Museums of Bat Yam, as well as a co-founding editor of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa based Maayan publishing. He is the author of Neomaterialism (Sternberg Press, 2013), and editor of Ruti Sela: For The Record (Archive Books, 2015). Recent curatorial projects include: Factory Fetish at Westspace, Melbourne, co-curated with Liang Luscombe in 2015; Roee Rosen: Group Exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, co-curated with Gilad Melzer in 2016; and The Kids Want Communism at MoBY in 2016. From 2011-2013, he was a Vera List Center for Art and Politics fellow.
This lecture is part of the Department of Art Theory and Practice at Northwestern University Visiting Artist Lecture Series, and is made possible with generous support from The Myers Foundations and the Jerrold Loebl Fund for the arts.

Забытые вожди» - это проект, рассказывающий о ключевых фигурах в руководстве Советского Союза в период с 1917 по 1953 годы. Феликс Дзержинский, Климент Ворошилов, Семен Буденный, Вячеслав Молотов, Андрей Жданов, Виктор Абакумов, Лаврентий Берия. Их имена известны всей стране и сегодня. Но мало кто помнит, как именно эти фигуры вошли в историю; что сделали для своего государства. Герои цикла находились в пучине гражданского противостояния и социальных потрясений, они меняли ход истории. В их честь называли города, улицы и горные вершины, им возводили памятники, об их победах рассказывали в школах, но они не могли знать, что спустя годы их биографии подвергнутся тщательной редактуре, а все достижения предадутся забвению.
Герои цикла «Страна Советов. Забытые вожди» – военачальники, государственные и партийные деятели, чьи судьбы стали отражением эпохи. Февральская революция, Гражданская война, «красный террор», репрессии, Великая Отечественная война – эти сложные, а порой страшные для страны события проходят красными линиями в биографиях «забытых вождей», формируют их характеры и объясняют многие поступки. Эти непростые времена были для героев цикла не просто фоном жизни, они стали самой их жизнью.

As part of our continuing collaboration with Northwestern University's Department of Art Theory and Practice, the Graham is pleased to host Joshua Simon, who will present The Kids Want Communism, a yearlong program of exhibitions marking 99 years since the October Revolution, which he initiated in collaboration with State of Concept Athens, Free/Slow University of Warsaw, Tranzit Prague, Skuc gallery in Ljubljana, the Visual Culture Research Center in Kiev, and MoBY-Museums of Bat Yam. The talk will outline how the communist horizon and real existing socialism can inform our understanding of the current social and cultural, political, and economic realities we are facing with the implosion of the neoliberal order. Simon's research in the past several years has been focused on notions of materiality and subjectivity, therefore, this talk will move between animism and productivism, commodity fetish and debt economy, double negation and metabolism, shock work and the dividual.
Joshua Simon is director and chief curator at MoBY-Museums of Bat Yam, as well as a co-founding editor of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa based Maayan publishing. He is the author of Neomaterialism (Sternberg Press, 2013), and editor of Ruti Sela: For The Record (Archive Books, 2015). Recent curatorial projects include: Factory Fetish at Westspace, Melbourne, co-curated with Liang Luscombe in 2015; Roee Rosen: Group Exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, co-curated with Gilad Melzer in 2016; and The Kids Want Communism at MoBY in 2016. From 2011-2013, he was a Vera List Center for Art and Politics fellow.

The PT-76 is a Soviet amphibious light tank designed in 1948 which saw service from 1952 up until its gradual retirement from 1967 onwards, partly replaced by the more versatile BMP-1 APC. Characterised by a wide hull and water jet propulsion, the PT-76 offered excellent amphibious capabilities. It was, however, plagued by a large silhouette, weak armor protection and an underpowered 76 mm gun. Despite these flaws, the PT-76 enjoyed a long service life within the Soviet and Russian armed forces, which only placed it into its reserves in 2006. Comparable to other Soviet Cold War vehicles, it has seen combat in several wars and is still in use within smaller armies. Russia is attempting to replace them with BMP-3F amphibious APCs.

Забытые вожди» - это проект, рассказывающий о ключевых фигурах в руководстве Советского Союза в период с 1917 по 1953 годы. Феликс Дзержинский, Климент Ворошилов, Семен Буденный, Вячеслав Молотов, Андрей Жданов, Виктор Абакумов, Лаврентий Берия. Их имена известны всей стране и сегодня. Но мало кто помнит, как именно эти фигуры вошли в историю; что сделали для своего государства. Герои цикла находились в пучине гражданского противостояния и социальных потрясений, они меняли ход истории. В их честь называли города, улицы и горные вершины, им возводили памятники, об их победах рассказывали в школах, но они не могли знать, что спустя годы их биографии подвергнутся тщательной редактуре, а все достижения предадутся забвению.
Герои цикла «Страна Советов. Забытые вожди» – военачальники, государственные и партийные деятели, чьи судьбы стали отражением эпохи. Февральская революция, Гражданская война, «красный террор», репрессии, Великая Отечественная война – эти сложные, а порой страшные для страны события проходят красными линиями в биографиях «забытых вождей», формируют их характеры и объясняют многие поступки. Эти непростые времена были для героев цикла не просто фоном жизни, они стали самой их жизнью.

The Armenian Encyclopedia (Armenian: Հայկական Հանրագիտարան; AE) publishing house was established in 1967 as a department of the Institute of History of the Armenian Academy of Sciences under the presidency of Viktor Hambardzumyan (1908–1996), co-edited by Abel Simonyan (1922–1994) and Makich Arzumanyan (1919–1988). In 1988–1999 the editor-in-chief was Konstantin Khudaverdyan (1929–1999) and since 1999 Hovhannes Aivazyan. It produced the Soviet Armenian Encyclopedia (also rendered Armenian Soviet Encyclopedia; Armenian: Հայկական Սովետական Հանրագիտարան, Haykakan sovetakan hanragitaran, Russian: Армя́нская сове́тская энциклопе́дия, Armyanskaya sovetskaya entsiklopediya АСЭ) from 1974–1986.
The AE publishing house also edited a children's encyclopedia, Who is it? What is it? (Armenian: Ո՞վ է, Ի՞նչ է) in 4 volumes (1984–87), the Russian-Armenian Polytechnical Dictionary (1988) and a Traveler's Encyclopedia (1990). Since Armenian independence (1991) publications include titles on topics of such current-day issues such as the Nagorno-Karabakh War, the Armenian Question and the Armenian diaspora.
