Diving - Straits of Mackinac - Cedarville Shipwreck
CEDARVILLE Shipwreck Length: 588' Beam: 60' Depth: 40' - 107' Type: Steel Steam Freighter Lost: May 7, 1965 Built: 1927, River Rouge, Michigan; converted to self-unloader 1956-57; modified 1961 (reboilered and new stack) Location: Lake Huron, 3 miles east of Mackinac Bridge Description: How lost: This modern shipwreck is the result of controversial conduct by two ships. Carrying a cargo of limestone, the Cedarville was westbound when she ran into very heavy fog. The Cedarville continued moving relying on her radar and radio contact. The MV Topdalsfjord did not respond by radio resulting in confusion by the Cedarville officers. When the ships were near collision, the Cedarville attempted an emergency turn but was struck hard port amidships. She sank quickly, settling in two parts at approximately a 45-degree angle. The Cedarville was found at fault. Eight lives were lost. She was heavily salvaged because of her close proximity to the surface. Today, her cargo of limestone lies spilled on the lake floor alongside her unloader. Present condition: The Cedarville is in very good condition. While much of her ship stores and gear have been removed, she still has much to explore. Her cargo holds are very large, the pilothouse is easily accessible, the forward and stern crew quarters are intact, and her engine room is accessible.

Swims the Straits of Mackinac for the 4th time with WildWomanOutdoors.com in 2011
Kellie Nightlinger is the first woman to swim the Straits of Mackinac. This is the strip of water that connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. It also separates the Upper Peninsula from Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Kellie swims this 5 mile journey once a year. She is a role model to local youth, the Angels Among Us Youth Camp that Kellie has founded, and her many supporters across the country.

Kayaking The Straits of Mackinaw November 2009- Thrice Digital Sea
Some footage of Big Ken and myself during our annual Straits of Mackinaw journey. This year we waited until NOVEMBER 7th to go!! The reported winds in Mackinaw City were 20-30mph with a high temp of 52F. Out on the water it was a bit colder and windier obviously. Song is Digital Sea by Thrice. Please don't sue me/remove this video! :-) Also, sorry for the crappy video quality. I was using my handheld digital camera so I didn't have zoom or audio recording capabilities. Hopefully next year I will have a video camera/underwater housing!!

Ancient River Canyon at the Straits of Mackinac
Here's a cool NOAA animated fly-through of the submerged river canyon in the Straits of Mackinac (from west to east - from northern Lake Michigan into northern Lake Huron under the Mackinac Bridge). This canyon required the Mackinac Bridge to be a suspension bridge due to its breadth and depth. Notice the cable tower bridge foundation piers are visible in the animation. The canyon was cared by a great river during an early low water stage of the Great Lakes.

Straits of Mackinaw - White Shoal Light Station - St. Helena's Island - Charlevoix Sailing
Although the runtime is indicated as slightly more than 30 minutes, the video only runs 23 minutes. There are seven minutes of gray space at the end due to the file format upload and the fact that this version is totally unedited. This video starts off with a short piece at Copper Harbor zoomed in on the lighthouse area which was shot after the sunrise in the previous video. After a two minutes it switches to the Straits of Mackinaw for shipping activity in the area just west of the Straits of Mackinaw to Include St. Helena's Island and around White Shoal Light Station. This part of the video was shot from a rest area just off of Hwy 2 which runs along the north shore of Lake Michigan heading west from St. Ignace. This location is some 17 miles distant from the White Shoal Light Station. Reaching out to view the Light Station required using a 400mm telephoto lens mounted via a video adapter plus a 1.4X converter to my Canon XL-1 video camera. This combination yielded an amazing focal length of 7200mm which is how I was able to bring the Light Station into view. The first portion is very shaky because it was a very windy day even using the dual tripod set-up I employed - one for the telephoto lens and a second for the video camera. The second portion, shot on the following day, is much smoother as the winds were considerably less. After the White Shoal material, the video switches down to Charlevoix and some sailing with Tireless 474. Much of the sailing portion of this ...

Three Teens Paddle across the Straits of Mackinac supporting swimmer Kellie Nightlinger
Kyle, Marie, and Nathan all bravely crossed the Straits of Mackinac in support of Straits swimmer Kellie Nightlinger. It was the first crossing for all three and they calmly paddled through turbulent water. Kyle had the hardest job as he towed a support kayak for Kellie in case she needed to hop in. The chop provided his tow to be quite challenging. Way to go guys. Thanks for the help. Kellie has a youth mentoring program she started where she engages youth into the wild.
