Army of Anyone was a supergroup formed by Filter frontman Richard Patrick with two of the then-former members of rock band Stone Temple Pilots. In addition to Patrick on vocals, the band featured Dean DeLeo and Robert DeLeo on guitars and bass, respectively, and Ray Luzier (currently of Korn and formerly of David Lee Roth's band) on drums. This was the first band the DeLeo brothers formed without Scott Weiland since the short-lived Talk Show project in 1997 and was their first major project since STP's breakup in 2003.

Formation and debut album (2005-2007)[link]

While writing material for a fourth Filter album, Richard Patrick linked up with the DeLeo brothers for help. The result of their meeting was a track called "A Better Place". A few days later, they decided to form a new band. Ray Luzier was called to audition after the DeLeo brothers were impressed with Ray's sound check at a show. Luzier joined the band later after a successful auditioning. The band had recorded more than 30 songs in Patrick's home studio, 11 of which would make their way on to their debut album, which was originally slated for an early 2006 release.

Army of Anyone originally signed with Columbia Records to release their debut album but most of the personnel who backed them at Columbia Records were fired, making them opt to change their label.^[1]

In a message posted by Luzier on his official message board, he stated the album would be released in August 2006. It was finally released on November 14. The album was produced by Bob Ezrin, the producer behind Pink Floyd's epic rock opera The Wall and Alice Cooper's early hits. Patrick commented that the delays were caused by a few personal reasons such as members getting married and having children. During that time, they opted to re-mix and re-master the record.

The band's first single was titled "Goodbye," which gathered significant radio airplay, climbing up to 3rd place in the Mainstream Rock chart. "Goodbye" made its video debut on Yahoo Music, on October 3, 2006. However, the second single, "Father Figure", failed to match that success, peaking at 31st place in the same chart.

For a brief period of time, an instrumental track called "Used to Know Her" was also available for free download by the band because the version available as an iTunes bonus track was cut off mid-song. An iTunes exclusive three-in-one download that was released on October 31. The EP includes the single "Goodbye," the music video for the single, and a special podcast featuring interviews with all of the band members discussing the tracks on the CD.

Army of Anyone planned on releasing a DVD in 2007 which would include studio footage of the group recording their debut album.^[2] This would ultimately not happen.

While promoting their debut album, Army of Anyone visited radio stations across the country from late September. Among the songs they played at these stations were covers of Filter's "Take a Picture" and Stone Temple Pilots' "Interstate Love Song." They also performed the single "Goodbye" on the November 20 Late Night with Conan O'Brien and November 23 Last Call with Carson Daly. In addition to playing songs from the album, they also included covers of "Big Bang Baby," "Vasoline," and "Piece of Pie" by Stone Temple Pilots, "Hey Man, Nice Shot," "Take a Picture," and "Welcome to the Fold" by Filter, and an interlude version of "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin.

The band headlined the 2007 edition of the SnoCore Tour which had previously been headlined by bands such as Seether, Chevelle, Helmet, and Shinedown. Army of Anyone were supported by Hurt throughout the tour.

Post-debut and hiatus (2007-present)[link]

On May 14, 2007, Richard Patrick was interviewed on the Lunatic Radio Show and announced that he was working on new Filter material. On May 26, Army of Anyone played their last concert in El Paso, Texas. Patrick subtly confirmed on Sirius' Lithium 24 channel that the band has likely ended; after playing Stone Temple Pilots' "Big Bang Baby," he stated, "I was in a band with Dean and Rob," referring to Army of Anyone in the past tense.

Since the band parted ways, Patrick has recorded two new Filter albums. The first was 2008's Anthems for the Damned, the second was The Trouble with Angels, which released August 17, 2010. Robert and Dean DeLeo rejoined Stone Temple Pilots when the band reunited in early 2008, and in April the band announced their reunion tour. The band recorded their self-titled sixth studio album and released it on May 25, 2010. Ray Luzier became Korn's newest drummer, officially being announced as a full-on member in April 2009.^[3]

Although Richard Patrick said in an interview with Kiwibox that he wouldn't mind possibly reuniting with Army of Anyone someday, he said he only would if the conditions of reuniting weren't too difficult. After Korn's May 24, 2010 show in Omaha, Nebraska, Ray Luzier spoke with Revenant Media ^[4] and claimed that Army Of Anyone was not dead. After Korn, Filter and Stone Temple Pilot's summer tours, Luzier claimed he would be re-uniting with Richard Patrick and the Deleo brothers to write for what would be Army Of Anyone's sophomore release.

However, none of the other band members have mentioned such plans. In a July 2010 interview with Richard Patrick, he said his main focus will be Filter for the foreseeable future.^[5] Patrick also said in a later interview that, when asked to do another Army of Anyone album, he complained that the first one took too long (three years), and he and Robert DeLeo agreed it may be best to go back to their previous bands.^[6]

In a November 2011 interview, Patrick said of the future of the band:

Those guys are amazing, it's basically this simple: Robert has a studio in his basement where he can totally do his old-fashioned kind of classic sound. They can write and record at any moment in time, they can get Ray Luzier in to play drums and I can take it for a week or two and write vocals or sing it. So it's as easy as them kind of recording everything, which is actually probably tough because they're constantly working with Scott on Stone Temple Pilot stuff. So the band is always there, you know what I mean, we're alive, we talk, Dean and I are constantly in communication. Ray Luzier, every time I see him he's like "Man that Army of Anyone record is still, people still come up to me and talk about that Army of Anyone record". And I think that I honestly could probably do a way better job just 'cause of what I've learned lately as a singer...I think the best Army of Anyone record is still to come, it's still totally doable and could be even better.^[7]

Raymond Lee "Ray" Luzier (born June 14, 1970 in Pennsylvania) is an American drummer. He is currently the drummer of the band Korn, becoming a full-time member of the band in April 2009.^[1]

Life and career[link]

Ray Luzier was raised in West Newton, Pennsylvania, a small town an hour outside of Pittsburgh. He began to playing drums at age five, and although basically self-taught, he participated in high school jazz, concert, and marching bands. After graduating in 1988, Luzier moved to Hollywood, California to pursue an education at the renowned Musicians Institute. He graduated in 1989 with a degree from MI's Percussion Institute of Technology. Luzier later returned as an instructor at Musicians Institute (1992–2001), where he taught rock-style drumming classes and gave private lessons.

Luzier is well known for his work with David Lee Roth, who he played drums for from 1997-2005. Luzier has also played with The Hideous Sun Demons, a progressive-rock/fusion trio formed with DLR bandmembers Toshi Hiketa (guitar) and James LoMenzo (bass). In 2004, Luzier released an instructional DVD. It features a wide variety of lessons, including double-bass technique, drum fills, motion exercises, and warm-ups. It was released through Hal Leonard Publishing Co.

In January 2006, Luzier appeared at the NAMM in Anaheim, California with Billy Sheehan and Toshi Hiketa. Robert DeLeo and Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots appeared at the same NAMM venue as part of an impromptu band put together by Steve Ferrone. After seeing Luzier's performance, the DeLeo brothers invited Luzier to join Army of Anyone, the band they were putting together with vocalist Richard Patrick of the band Filter.

In 2007, after original drummer David Silveria had left (in 2006), Korn hired many touring drummers including Joey Jordison of Slipknot. Jordison left due to preparation for the recording of Slipknot's new album All Hope Is Gone. Consequently, Korn was then looking for a new drummer; and Luzier reportedly flew to Seattle to audition for Korn with Munky and Fieldy. When told to learn only five of their songs, Luzier learned 30. After an amazing audition, Ray was immediately invited to join Korn.^[2]

Luzier played his first show with Korn on January 13, 2008 in Dublin, Ireland and played with the band throughout 2008. Korn recorded their ninth studio album together with Ray and their original producer Ross Robinson. Korn frontman Jonathan Davis revealed that Luzier is now an official member of the band.^[3] Ray made "UltimateRockGods" Artist Of The Month for July.^[4]

Luzier also played live with Stone Temple Pilots for a couple of the band's shows on their reunion tour in October filling in for drummer Eric Kretz, who took time off due to the death of his father. In November 2010, Ray played drums for the immensely popular Japanese band, Kat-Tun on their song 'Change UR World'. It was Kat-Tun's 13th number 1 single on the Oricon charts.

Jesse West was one of the first rappers signed to Motown Records and in 1989, released the album "No Prisoners". He then went on to produce hit songs with many artists including GZA, Xzibit, Heavy D and KRS-One among others. One of Bad Boy Records' original "Hitmen", West recorded Biggie Smalls first demo as well as produced remixes for songs on Mary J. Blige's album, What's the 411?.

As rapper 3rd Eye, it has been argued that Jesse West was the first rapper to use the term "bling" ^[1] on Super Cat's 1993 hit "Dolly My Baby (Remix)" - a song that West produced, and also featured Puff Daddy and a young Biggie Smalls in his record debut.

Jesse West continues to create tracks and produce music for artists.

Felipe Andres Coronel (born February 19, 1978), better known by the stage name Immortal Technique, is an American rapper of Afro-Peruvian descent as well as an urban activist. He was born in Lima, Peru and raised in Harlem, New York.^[2] Most of his lyrics focus on controversial issues in global politics. The views expressed in his lyrics are largely commentary on issues such as class struggle, poverty, religion, government and institutional racism.

Immortal Technique has voiced a desire to retain control over his production,^[3] and has stated in his music that record companies, not artists themselves, profit the most from mass production and marketing of music. He claimed in an interview to have sold close to 200,000 copies of his three official releases.^[4]

Biography[link]

Early life[link]

Coronel is African-Peruvian and was born in 1978 in a military hospital in Lima.^[1] His family emigrated in 1980 to Harlem.^[5] During his teenage years he was arrested multiple times due in part to what he has said was "selfish and childish" behavior. He attended Hunter College High School on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Shortly after enrolling in Pennsylvania State University, he was arrested and charged with assault-related offenses due to his involvement in an altercation between fellow students, the charges stemming from this incident led to him being incarcerated for a year.^[1][6] After being paroled, he took political science classes at Baruch College in New York City for two semesters at the behest of his father, who allowed Coronel to live with him on the condition that he go to school.^[7] Honing his rapping skills in jail, and unable to find decent wage-paying employment after his release, Coronel began selling his music on the streets of New York while battling with MCs whenever the opportunity arose.^[8][9][10] This, coupled with his victories in numerous freestyle rap competitions of the New York underground hip hop scene such as Rocksteady Anniversary, Braggin Rites and others, led to his reputation as a ferocious Battle MC.^[11]

Revolutionary Vol.1 and Vol.2[link]

In 2001, Immortal Technique released his first album Revolutionary Vol. 1 without the help of a record label or distribution, instead using money earned from his rap battle triumphs^[11]. He also battled but lost to Posta Boy in 106 & Park's Freestyle Friday. Revolutionary Vol. 1 also contained the underground classic Dance With The Devil. In November 2002, he was listed by The Source in its "Unsigned Hype" column, highlighting artists that are not signed to a record label. The following year, in September 2003, he received the coveted "Hip Hop Quotable" in The Source for a song entitled "Industrial Revolution" from his second album. Immortal Technique is the only rapper in history to have a "Hip Hop Quotable" while being unsigned.^[11] He released his second album Revolutionary Vol. 2 in 2003. In 2004, Viper Records and, in 2005, Babygrande Records re-released Immortal Technique's debut, Revolutionary Vol. 1, to make it available to a wider audience. "Point of No Return" from Revolutionary Vol 2 was used as the entrance theme for Rashad Evans during the UFC 88 Main Event between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans.

Revolutionary Vol.3 and The Middle Passage[link]

Between 2005 and 2007 Immortal Technique began working on The Middle Passage and The 3rd World, the two albums that would serve a follow up to Revolutionary Vol. 2 and complete the series. He was also featured on several movie soundtracks and video game soundtracks, all the while touring relentlessly and becoming heavily involved in visiting prisons to speak to youth and working with immigrant rights activists and raising tens of thousands of dollars for children’s hospitals overseas. He invested his money not in items that are usually associated with fame but rather in large pieces of farmland in Latin America. He created a writing grant program for high school students as well.^[12]

The Martyr[link]

In October 2011 Immortal Technique released The Martyr, a free compilation album of previously unreleased material and new tracks. ^[13]

Collaborations[link]

The summer of 2005 saw the release of "Bin Laden", a vinyl single 12" featuring Mos Def and DJ Green Lantern. The single also contained a remix of the song featured Chuck D of Public Enemy and KRS-One. In early 2006, the song "Impeach the President", featuring Dead Prez and Saigon turned up in the mixtape "Alive on Arrival" DJ Green Lantern. This is a simple version of The Honeydrippers, 1973, in which Immortal Technique urged fans to organize a vote of censure against George W. Bush. In April 2009, a new song leaked on the internet named "Democratie Fasciste (Article 4)" by Brazilian-French rapper Rockin' Squat which featured Immortal Technique. The official release of the song and Rockin' Squat's album Confessions D'un Enfant Du Siècle Volume 2 was on May 12, 2009. The instrumental from the song was sampled from Wendy Rene's "After Laughter". The song expresses the inequalities of the Third World and revolutionary events throughout history against tyranny and oppression. The song contains lyrics in English (Immortal Technique), French (Rockin' Squat) and brief shout outs in Spanish (Immortal Technique). This song is Immortal Technique's first official international collaboration.^[14] In early 2009, it was announced that there would be a collaboration between Technique and UK underground artist Lowkey, on a single called "Voices of the Voiceless". On September 11, 2009, a "snippet" of the song was released on YouTube.^[15] The preview was released ahead of its September 21 launch on iTunes, as part of a web-campaign that included updates, promotion and links on forums, E-Magazines and several social networking sites. The song's lyrics cover a broad range of issues that are familiar to listeners of both artists – racism, world revolution, war, socialism, government control, rape, famine, colonialism, Classism, self-determination and the war in Iraq.^[16]

Charitable work[link]

In June 2008, Immortal Technique partnered with Omeid International, a Non–Profit Human Rights Organization, to lend his support. He dubbed the work as "The Green Light Project". With the profits of The 3rd World album, Immortal Technique traveled to Kabul, Afghanistan to help Omeid build an orphanage without any corporate or external funding. The orphanage, having been successfully established, currently houses over 20 orphaned children from Kabul.^[17]

Immortal Technique appeared as himself in a docudrama film entitled This Revolution, which was recorded during the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York. The tape contains the protests surrounding the convention in the form of a documentary. It also featured Viper Records affiliates Akir and producer SouthPaw in roles.

Since then Immortal Technique has taken control of Viper Records and has signed a distribution deal with Babygrande Records / E1 Entertainment to vent to their next album. SouthPaw has managed to establish himself as A&R of Viper Records.
