Piccadilly (1929) - extract
With its stunning production design and photography, 'Piccadilly' depicts London through an otherworldly cocktail of influences, blending the debauchery of the rich West End set with the sleazy excitement of a Limehouse dive bar and the city's smoky Chinese quarter. German émigré EA Dupont, who brought an international flair to late-'20s British cinema, also tackles the then risqué subject of inter-racial sex. As Shosho, who works her way from kitchen hand to star attraction at the eponymous nightclub, via a love tryst with its (attached) owner, Chinese-American star Anna May Wong represents the ultimate, and ultimately doomed, Deco diva. The Piccadilly Players - I've Never Seen A Smile Like Yours, 1929
The Piccadilly Players (Under the Direction by Al Starita) with Vocal Trio - I've Never Seen A Smile Like Yours, Columbia 1929 ------------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: In the history of hot dance bands of 1920s, two exquisite dance bands called Piccadilly (or The Piccadilly) Players have to be mentioned. One was the American dance orchestra - a house band for the Edison label, directed by Mel (Melville) Morris. Quite a few recordings of that excellent orchestra can be found in YT. The other was the British band, conducted by clarinetist Al Starita. He was formerly a member of Jack Hylton's famous dance orchestra, that played in one of best London West End night clubs - The Kit-Cat Club, in Haymarket. Hylton was engaged in numerous artistical occupations, and he often let Al Starita take over and conduct the band in his place, when the night was very busy. It's how, in the end of 1920s, the new dance band was born in London - The Piccadilly Players, that started recording for Columbia also as The Piccadilly Revels Band (conducted by Al's brother, Ray Starita).

Piccadilly Players - What Did'ja Wanna Make Me Love You For (1929)
Melville Morris (Oct.5,1888 - Feb.10,1987) Mel, a fine pianist and first rate sight reader, started working as a music demonstrator pianist for some of the Tin Pan Alley publishing houses. In 1907 he was hired to the staff of Hager Company as a song demonstrator. Late in the year he was picked up by rapidly growing publisher Jerome H. Remick & Company as an arranger and song plugger. The 1910 Census indicates that he was a music publisher, but it was more likely that he was working in music for a publisher, as he was also still living with his parents. His first published composition came in 1911. Morris married Dorothy Kresner in late 1910 in New York. In the early teens Mel started working in Vaudeville as an entertainer and pianist. In 1912 and 1913 he was also associated with the George W. Meyer Music Company. He was the accompanist for singer Lillian Lorraine at Hammerstein's Theater. Listings from 1913 and later indicate that Mel cut some piano rolls for the Rhythmodik label. In the late 1910s Mel went to work for Paul Whiteman, who was building up his orchestra at this time. In April of 1918 he was engaged as a professional manager for Leo Feist, Incorporated, and took out an ad in the trades noting the address, and that he would "be pleased to greet his many friends." Morris ventured to England for a short while where he helped write a musical comedy. Back in the states, his Picadilly Players, a subset of the Whiteman Orchestra, became a house band for Edison ...

Sleep, Baby Sleep. Bertini & His Dance Band. 1929.
"Sleep, Baby,Sleep" 'Bertini & His Dance Band,as playing at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool. Vocalist - Tom Whalley.' This record was recorded in May, 1929 and is one of Bertini's first records. It was recorded for Piccadilly Records but issued through Curry's Ltd.,the High Street electrical and cycle dealers. This record is in fine condition. I have never come across the vocalist, Tom Whalley on any other records and he recieves full written credit on the label for his singing refrain. An excellent looking label though Curry's, see what you think?.
