Zululand
THE HEART OF THE ZULU KINGDOM Zululand is named after the inhabitants of the area, the Zulus. 'Zulu' means 'heaven' in the Zulu language. Zululand, part of the province of KwaZulu-Natal is peaceful, with green hills of rich soil, waving grasslands, abundant forests, and an unhurried lifestyle. The major towns of Vryheid and Ulundi, are both well located in relation to the national road and rail networks. Route P700 between Ulundi and Richards Bay is a major development corridor that will facilitate eco-tourism, agricultural activities and business opportunities. To be wild about the Zulu Kingdom is to be wild about Africa...because it's here in South Africa's Kwa Zulu Natal that the untamed spirit of Africa beats wild and strong...from the pulsating rhythms of its people to the pounding energy of its wildlife, there's a tangible sense of adventure and excitement... It's a Kingdom where you'll see a rich mixture of people from all over the world...people, who, over the years, have helped to shape its character. It's also a Kingdom long renowned for its plentiful supply of game...from the foothills of the Drakensberg where hunter gatherers once lived in a demi-paradise of rock shelters with flowing water overlooking green valleys stocked with antelope, right across to the fertile valleys in the north which once served as the hunting ground for the legendary King Shaka. Ladysmith-uThukela District Municipality
THE SOUL OF THE ZULU KINGDOM uThukela District Municipality, the soul of the Zulu kingdom, is a region that has an abundance of natural resources and opportunities. uThukela is highly accessible and linked to both the provincial and national economic centres by well-established provincial and national road networks. The N3 and N11 make uThukela an important entry point toKwaZulu-Natal. The R74 is an alternative route from the Free State, and is an important tourist route linking the Drakensberg with the north coast of the province. uThukela has a strong district council that has performed an important developmental and administrative role in the region. Investment into infrastructure and services such as water, sports fields, community halls, roads and crèches has benefited many rural communities. The key economic sectors within uThukela include agriculture, manufacturing and tourism, while freight and logistics are a growing sector. The municipal area is generally characterized by good potential agricultural land. The commercial farming sector is dominated by forestry plantations, and field crops including maize, dry beans and potatoes. The extensive livestock production focuses primarily on beef, dairy and sheep. Prospective agricultural projects include: deciduous, berry and citrus fruit plantations, large-scale production of vegetables, sunflowers and peanuts, aloe and Berg tea project, poultry farming, goat farming, bee keeping and game farms. Ladysmith, a thriving ...
