Jimmy McGovern's HILLSBOROUGH DVD, starring Christopher Eccleston and Ricky Tomlinson
Christopher Eccleston and Ricky Tomlinson star in the BAFTA-winning ITV drama HILLSBOROUGH (12), released by Network DVD on 7th September 2009, RRP £15.99. It is available for the first time in any format. The DVD comes 20 years after the tragedy and in the wake of this governments decision to release official documents relating to the disaster. Written by Jimmy McGovern (Cracker, The Street), HILLSBOROUGH is an emotionally powerful and highly acclaimed dramatisation of personal grief and public issues in the wake of the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster, where 96 Liverpool FC fans were crushed to death at a FA cup semi-final match against Nottingham Forest. Following the stories of three victims families, from the initial excitement of match day to the legal battles that followed the tragedy, Hillsborough presents a raw, honest portrayal of the campaign for truth within a culture of closed ranks and cover-ups. The drama also seeks to dismantle damaging lies regarding fans conduct, perpetuated by sections of the popular press and seen by McGovern and others as symptomatic of an ongoing vilification of the working class within the British media. Initially broadcasted in 1996, Hillsborough won countless awards, including a BAFTA for Best Single Drama and the Writers Guild of Great Britain award for Best TV Play. The impact of Hillsborough is considered an important factor in the setting up of an official inquiry into the disaster and the way football matches are policed today.

Hillsborough (1996) (complete ITV TV film)
Hillsborough Note: I haven't uploaded this film as a piece of 'nostalgia'. I have uploaded it as a mark of respect. First broadcast 5th December 1996, ITV1 Jimmy McGovern's dramatisation of the Hillsborough football stadium disaster both investigates the police actions which caused it and explores its effects on the victims' families, skilfully using the dramatised documentary form to weave together public issues and private emotion. Founded in investigative journalism, Hillsborough dramatises court transcripts and documents new evidence which debunks police statements, for instance the supposed lack of decent video surveillance. Hillsborough overtly takes the families' point of view, punctuating the unfolding drama with the later statements to-camera of Hillsborough relatives (as played by actors). McGovern was energised by the passionate response of Hillsborough families to his 1994 Cracker story 'To Be A Somebody', in which the traumatised Alby raged against lies told about the disaster. Given the news currency of the families' campaign for truth, and McGovern's high profile, ITV fast-tracked Hillsborough onto screens in December 1996. In the opening sequences, McGovern introduces young, passionate football fans, dismantling the myths about drunken 'yobs' stealing from and urinating on the dead, as told by the police and spread by The Sun. The police's stories directly contradict the official Taylor inquiry, which firmly concluded that the police were to blame. For ...

Moving on 17.11.11 part 1 Donor (2011) series 3 episode 4
Daytime drama series Moving On, created by Jimmy McGovern, continues with a new film every day this week exploring contemporary issues through characters who reach a turning point in their lives and then move on. Christina has always been the life and soul of the party but, as she approaches 40, it seems her friends would rather change nappies than go clubbing. Even her own biological clock is starting to tick and she is shocked when boyfriend Andy reluctantly confesses he's infertile. Devastated he can't give her what she wants, Andy tells Christina he'll do anything to be with her. Wanting her own child, Christina announces she's found the perfect sperm donor -- her gay best friend Mick. Mick and his boyfriend Frank are gob-smacked when the subject is broached but Mick says he'll think about it. The request unexpectedly opens up a can of worms in Mick and Frank's relationship and threatens to scupper Mick's friendship with Christina, leaving her to decide what she really wants from life, and what she's prepared to sacrifice to get it. Christine is played by Sally Philips, Andy by Paul Rhys, Mick by Alastair MacKenzie and Frank by Warren Brown.

Escalating
The twists and turns of true love. This short comedy was made by students of Croxteth Comprehensive School in Liverpool as part of a First Light project. Invoking the spirit of silent era comedians such as Charlie Chaplin, this film went on to win 'Best Childrens Film' at the Chicago Childrens Film Festival. The students were mentored by writer Jimmy McGovern and supported by Peter Goodwin of Tradition Films and their teacher Mike McGrath.
