Turnhout (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈtʏrn(ɦ)ʌu̯t]) is a Belgian municipality located in the Flemish province of Antwerp. The city is also known as the Capital of the Campine. The municipality comprises only the city of Turnhout proper. On January 1, 2010, Turnhout had a total population of 40,763. The total area is 56.06 km² which gives a population density of 710 inhabitants per km². Turnhout is famous as the world center of the playing card and is both legally and administratively the capital of the Kempen region and of the Arrondissement of Turnhout. It is also the economic and cultural center of its region with more than 40 schools. There is also an important services sector with two hospitals, a two-stage theatre and an eight-screen cinema.

Turnhout is located at about 51.3 North and 4.9 East, 42 km from the centre of Antwerp, 30 km from Breda and Tilburg, 40 km from Eindhoven. The football club of the city is K.V. Turnhout.

History[link]

Turnhout originated on the crossroads of two major trade routes and in the protection of the hunting castle of the Dukes of Brabant that seems to have existed since 1110 or earlier. This hunting past is still reflected in the city's coat of arms. The small community that developed obtained its Libertas as a "free city" from Henry I, Duke of Brabant in about 1212. In 1338, the privilege of organizing a market on Saturday was granted, a tradition that still holds today. In 1466, a traveler described the well-built houses and paved roads, and counted five churches.

By the 16th century, Turnhout had become a wealthy commercial center. Unfortunately there were not only ups, but also downs. The end of the 16th century brought war, fire, confiscations and epidemics. Suppression and inquisition made many progressive citizens to take refuge in Holland, leaving the land of Turnhout impoverished. The further history of Turnhout consists of a series of ups and downs. Many times, the city and surroundings were the playground of armies, resulting in two major battles named after Turnhout: one in 1597 and one in 1789 are referred to as Battle of Turnhout.

In 1830, Belgium became independent, and Turnhout fell just south of the new border with the Netherlands. The period of peace between 1831 and 1914 saw the digging of the canal (1846) and the construction of the railroad (1855).

In the late Middle Ages, Turnhout was a well-known center for the weaving of bedding articles and of the linen trade. At the start of the 19th century, these trades were replaced by industries based on the use of paper. Pieter Corbeels and Philippus Jacobus Brepols are considered to be the founders of this industry. Turnhout retains much of this industry today. Numerous graphics companies are located in the region, such as Brepols, Group Joos, Proost International Book Production, Van Genechten Packaging, and last but not least Cartamundi, the world market leader of the playing card industry. In addition, the Belgian Centre for the Graphics Industry, and the Flemish Innovation Center for Graphic Communication (Campus Blairon) are located in Turnhout. Soudal, whose headquarters is located in Turnhout, is one of the leading companies in sealants.

Sights[link]

Architectural sights worth visiting are the 12th century castle of the Dukes of Brabant, the gothic church of St. Peter, the beguinage (begijnhof) dating from the 13th century, the 14th century gothic chapel of Theobald and the Taxandria museum housed in a prestigious renaissance mansion. Of particular interest is the Museum of the Playing Card. This is located in an old factory building downtown and houses a beautifully restored steam engine.

The beguinage was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1998.

Turnhout is host to the biannual comic festival Strip Turnhout, the oldest comic festival of Flanders, and one of the largest. Every year, there is also the film festival Open Doek. During the summer months, the "Vrij-dagen" are organised. For a certain period, every Friday (vrijdag in Dutch) two artists or bands give a live performance. The event is completely free (vrij in Dutch) and attracts large crowds, strongly benefitting the local economy.

Jillian van Turnhout is an Irish children's rights activist and a member of Seanad Éireann.^[1]

She has previously been Chief Commissioner of the Irish Girl Guides (IGG); President of the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) and is currently a member of the National Youth Work Advisory Committee. She was also Secretary General of the ECB-BEC (predecessor to the European Youth Forum). She is the former Chief Executive of the Children's Rights Alliance.^[2]

Van Turnhout was a member and Vice President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). She was first nominated in 1998 by the Community and Voluntary Pillar on behalf of the NYCI to the EESC and was appointed by the Government. For a two year period between 2006 and 2008, she was Vice President where she was involved in Social Affairs, External Relations and Communications. Representing the EESC, she was on the Steering Group of the EU Forum on the Rights of the Child and the EU-China Round Table.^[3]

She was previously awarded the 'Freedom of Killarney' in County Kerry and in September 2010, van Turnhout won the Newstalk Women Mean Business Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award.^[4].

In May 2011, she was nominated by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny to the 24th Seanad.^[5][6] She is married to Michael van Turnhout who is a member of Fine Gael, the party's former constituency chairperson for Dublin South and a former member of their Executive Council.^[7]

Earl Sixteen (b. Earl John Daley, 9 May 1958, Kingston, Jamaica)^[1] is a reggae singer whose career began in the mid-1970s.

Biography[link]

Daley grew up in Waltham Park Road, Kingston,^[2] and, influenced by American soul and Jamaican artists such as Dennis Brown, began his singing career by entering local talent shows. He became the lead vocalist for the group The Flaming Phonics, playing live around Jamaica.^[2] Daley decided to drop out of school to pursue his music career, which prompted his mother to throw him out of the family home.^[2] Needing to make some money, the group tried out for producer Duke Reid, but left before finishing their recording for him due to his habit of firing live gunshots in the studio.^[2] They then worked with Herman Chin Loy, with Daley cutting his first solo track, "Hey baby". The group split up, with Daley concentrating on his solo career. Daley recorded "Malcolm X" for producer Joe Gibbs in 1975 - a track written by his school-friend Winston McAnuff, and which was later successfully covered by Dennis Brown.^[3][4] In 1977, he joined Boris Gardiner's group, The Boris Gardiner Happening, which brought him into contact with Lee "Scratch" Perry. In the late 1970s, after a spell with Derrick Harriott, Daley recorded four tracks at Perry's Black Ark studio, including the original recording of "White Belly Rat", also meeting Earl Morgan of The Heptones, who later produced his album, Shining Star.^[3] In the early 1980s he recorded singles for a variety of producers including Linval Thompson, Augustus Pablo, Clement Dodd, Sugar Minott, Yabby You, and Derrick Harriott, and recorded his debut album with Mikey Dread. He teamed up with Roy Cousins for two albums, Julie and Special Request. Earlier material recorded for Studio One was released as 1985's Showcase album.

In 1985, after spending time in the United States, he relocated to England, fathering a child. His child's mother knew Mad Professor, who Daley began working with. He also worked with other British producers such as Stafford Douglas.^[2][4] One of his tracks from this era was a cover version of "Holding Back the Years", which had been a big hit for Simply Red. Returning to Jamaica, he worked briefly with King Jammy. In the 1990s he made guest appearances on tracks by Leftfield. He is one of the two vocalists for the UK electronica/reggae band Dreadzone, who he has been with since 1995.^[1] He signed to WEA for his major label debut, 1997's Steppin' Out album.^[3]

Vincent Browne (born 17 July 1944) is an Irish print and broadcast journalist. He is a columnist with The Irish Times and The Sunday Business Post and a part time barrister.

From 1996 until 2007, he presented a nightly talk-show on RTÉ Radio, Tonight with Vincent Browne, which focussed on politics, the proceedings of tribunals on political corruption and police misconduct. He now presents Tonight with Vincent Browne on TV3, which broadcasts from Monday to Thursday at 11.05pm. The Guardian has described him as an "acerbic host...Ireland's Jeremy Paxman."^[1]

Early life[link]

Born in 1944, he grew up in Broadford, County Limerick, where he attended the local national school. He spent a year at the Irish language college in Ring, County Waterford, then a year at St. Mary's secondary school in Dromcolliher, County Limerick, before going to Castleknock College (1957–1962). He graduated from University College Dublin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics and Economics. He also founded the oldest surviving UCD newspaper, the College Tribune, in 1986.

Career[link]

He worked on RTÉ's The Late Late Show for five months in 1967–68.^[2] He reported on the Soviet and Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 for The Irish Times and then edited a monthly news magazine, Nusight in 1969–1970.^[3]

He was appointed Northern news editor of The Irish Press group in 1970 (working for all three newspapers in the group, The Irish Press, the Evening Press and The Sunday Press) and covered the most intense and violent period of the Northern Ireland conflict.^[2] In 1974, he joined Independent Newspapers and, after a brief period in the Evening Herald, worked for the Sunday Independent, then edited by Conor O'Brien and later by Michael Hand.^[4]

He launched Magill magazine in September 1977 with Noel Pearson and Mary Holland. Magill became Ireland's foremost investigative publication. Among its writers were Gene Kerrigan, Pat Brennan and Paddy Agnew. He remained editor of Magill until 1983, when he became involved in the relaunch of the Sunday Tribune with Tony Ryan, then of GPA and later of Ryanair. A series of articles he published in Magill highlighting the links between the Workers' Party of Ireland and the Official IRA in the 1980s caused him and other journalists to receive death threats. After the publication of "The Lost Revolution: the Story of the Official IRA and the Workers' Party" it was revealed that the Official IRA had planned to assassinate him by planting a bomb on his boat, but the operation was called off at the last minute. He was editor of the Sunday Tribune until 1994. He has written a weekly column for The Irish Times since then, and since 2000, has written weekly for The Sunday Business Post.^[2] He started broadcasting on RTÉ radio in 1996.

In 1997, he relaunched Magill magazine, which had ceased publication in 1990. In the 13 issues he published then, the magazine broke several major stories. One led to the establishment of the Planning Tribunal, originally chaired by Mr Justice Fergus Flood; another caused a committee of the Oireachtas to examine the DIRT scandal; another caused an investigation of insurance "churning" by Irish Life, a leading Irish insurance company. He sold the Magill title to Hosen publisher, Mike Hogan, in November 1998.^[2] He was called to the Irish Bar in 1997 and for a while practised as a barrister. He no longer practices law. ^[5]

In October 2004, he launched a current affairs magazine, Village, of which he was editor.^[6][7] Village ceased publication in August 2008 before being re-launched under a new editor, Michael Smith. Browne now writes a column for Village magazine.^{[8][dead link]}

He was involved in a controversy over the tapping of his telephone by the Irish state from February 1975 to February 1983. When this was disclosed by former minister for justice Seán Doherty, Browne sued the State. He made a settlement with the State in early 1997 which included an agreement to publish a statement on the settlement, stating, inter alia, that the State had intercepted his telephone conversations for reasons of State security — Browne had written much about the IRA in the early- to mid-1970s — while accepting that Browne had himself never been involved in subversion or crime. On being given access to the transcripts of from 1981, Browne claimed that it was apparent the motivation for the interception of his telephone conversations for the eight-year period had little to do with the security of the State — it was aimed at garnering information on his work as a journalist, entirely aside from his reporting of the IRA. Browne sought to have the agreement altered to permit a public acknowledgement that the intercepts were not done for security reasons. The Fine Gael–Labour-Democratic Left coalition government refused. He subsequently disclosed this himself on television and later in print.^[9]

For ten years he presented the programme Tonight with Vincent Browne on RTÉ Radio 1.^[10] In August 2000, he substituted for John Bowman on the RTÉ television programme Questions and Answers. He also presented Prime Time on RTÉ One.^[11]

Since 14 January 2007, he has presented Tonight with Vincent Browne, a nightly current affairs television show on TV3.^[12][13] Despite airing on what is usually considered a graveyard slot, the show has been highly successful drawing an average 166,000 viewers.^[14]

Politics[link]

Browne was involved with the Dublin Anti H-Block Movement during the 1981 Irish hunger strike. In 1994, he sought a nomination for the Fine Gael party in that year's European elections or the possible general election of that year (it was thought a general election might follow the collapse of the Albert Reynolds' government). He was rebuffed by the leader of Fine Gael and future Taoiseach, John Bruton. He became a vocal critic of the party.^[15]

A staunch critic of Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny, in 1982 Browne appeared on The Late Late Show to discuss the effectiveness of TDs where he poured scorn on Kenny, claiming he was "purporting" to be a TD. ^[16] In October 2010, he was forced to make a public apology to Kenny after jokingly asking whether Fine Gael was requesting that he go into a dark room with a gun and bottle of whiskey. This was in reference to Fine Gael's position in the polls, where they were in second place to Labour, and a previous leadership challenge to Kenny by Richard Bruton.^[17] Kenny refused to appear on the leaders' debate hosted by Browne on TV3 during the 2011 general election campaign.^[18][19]

He voted "No" in the Irish European Fiscal Compact referendum, 2012.^[20]

Personal life[link]

Browne is married to - and has two daughters.^[6] He sold his home in Dalkey in June 2011 to pay off debts incurred from the establishment of Village magazine, and to provide a pension.^[21][22]
