Robert E. Walkup (born November 14, 1936, in Ames, Iowa) served as the 40th Mayor of Tucson, Arizona from 1999 to 2011. He is a member of the Republican Party.
Walkup holds a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Iowa State University and served in the U.S. Army. Before becoming involved in politics, he was an engineer and executive in the aerospace industry for 35 years. He worked for Rockwell International, Fairchild Republic, and Hughes Aircraft Company.
Walkup also served as the former chairman of the Tucson Economic Council.
Walkup was elected to his current position on November 2, 1999, defeating Democratic former City Councilwoman Molly McKasson and local businessman Bob Beaudry. Benefitting from a split in the Democratic vote, he was sworn into office on December 6, 1999, succeeding two-term Tucson Mayor George Miller, who retired from office as the city's longest serving official. Walkup became the first Republican mayor of Tucson since 1983.
Walkup was re-elected for a second term on November 4, 2003, narrowly defeating Democratic former Mayor Tom Volgy. He was re-elected for a third term on November 6, 2007, defeating a Green Party candidate with 72% of the vote. after the Democrats failed to field a candidate. Walkup announced on February 22, 2011 that he would not seek re-election after his current term ends in December. Democrat Jonathan Rothschild won the election and was sworn into office on December 5, 2011.
Rodney Britz Glassman (born May 7, 1978) is an American businessman, author, and politician who served on the City Council of the City of Tucson, Arizona, from 2007 to 2010. At the time of his resignation he was serving as the Vice Mayor, which is a rotating title that moves from Councilperson to Councilperson. He also serves in the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG) of the United States Air Force.
In April 2010, Glassman entered the race for United States Senate as a member of the Democratic Party. The seat is currently held by Republican Senator John McCain. Due to Arizona's "resign-to-run" law, Glassman was required to resign from his position on the Tucson City Council prior to announcing his run for Senate.
Glassman was born and raised in Fresno, California. For high school, he went to Lake Forest Academy, an elite prep school in Illinois, and graduated in 1996. He moved to Arizona in 1997 to manage his family's faltering Ice Rink business. In the meantime, he pursued undergraduate and advanced degrees at the University of Arizona. Glassman received both a J.D. and Ph.D. (in Arid Land Resource Sciences) from the University of Arizona. In 2007, he ran for City Council of Tucson and won with more than 60% of the vote.
Derek Sanderson Jeter ( /ˈdʒiːtər/; born June 26, 1974) is an American baseball shortstop who has played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees. A five-time World Series champion, Jeter has been a central figure of the Yankees during their success of the 1990s and 2000s due to his clubhouse presence, on-field leadership, hitting ability, and baserunning. He is the Yankees' all-time career leader in hits (3,155), games played (2,472), stolen bases (342), and at bats (10,066). His accolades include twelve All-Star selections, five Gold Glove Awards, four Silver Slugger Awards, two Hank Aaron Awards, and the Roberto Clemente Award. Jeter is the all-time MLB leader in hits by a shortstop, and the 28th player to reach 3,000 hits.
The Yankees drafted Jeter out of high school in 1992, and he debuted in the major leagues in 1995. The following year, he became the Yankees' starting shortstop, won the Rookie of the Year Award, and helped the team win the 1996 World Series. Jeter continued to contribute during the team's championship seasons of 1998–2000; he finished third in voting for the American League (AL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award in 1998, recorded multiple career-high numbers in 1999, and won both the All-Star Game MVP and World Series MVP Awards in 2000. He has consistently placed among the AL leaders in hits and runs scored for the past ten years, and since 2003 has served as the Yankees' team captain.
