IBM Research, a division of IBM, is a research and development organization consisting of eleven research laboratories worldwide.

IBM Research was established with the 1945 opening of the Watson Scientific Computing Laboratory at Columbia University. This was the first IBM laboratory devoted to pure science and later expanded into additional IBM Research locations in Westchester County, New York starting in the 1950s, including the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in 1961.

IBM Research's global network of scientists work on a range of exploratory research projects in search of innovations that advance the capabilities of technology, as well as applied research projects, to help clients, governments and universities apply scientific breakthroughs to solve real-world business and societal challenges.

Major undertakings at IBM Research have included the invention of innovative materials and structures, high-performance microprocessors and computers, analytical methods and tools, algorithms, software architectures, methods for managing, searching and deriving meaning from data and in turning IBM's advanced services methodologies into reusable assets.

Murray Campbell is a Canadian computer scientist.

He is a Senior Manager in the Business Analytics and Mathematical Sciences Department at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, USA. The mission of the Services Modeling group is to apply deep technical expertise in areas such as optimization, forecasting, probabilistic analysis, and expertise sharing to a broad range of problems relevant to the IBM Services business. The primary focus is in the area of Business Analytics and Workforce Management, where solutions are developed that include services project/portfolio management, skill analytics, demand forecasting, workplace learning, workforce optimization, and strategic planning. Prior to the current position, Campbell was involved in surveillance projects related to petroleum production, disease outbreak, and financial data. In earlier work, Campbell was a member of the teams that developed chess machines: HiTech and a project to culminate in Deep Blue, the latter being the first computer to defeat the reigning world chess champion, Garry Kasparov, in a challenge match, in 1997.
