Puri Duronto Crosses the Mahanadi River at Cuttack and Accelerates to 110 kmph
The 12278 Puri Howrah Duronto Express crosses the gigantic Mahanadi River after Cuttack on a sunny July morning. The train does not stop at Cuttack and cruises into the Mahanadi bridge at around 30 kmph and accelerates steadily all through the 2.1 km bridge. The upshot is that when it emerges from the bridge, it is hitting its Maximum Permissible Speed (MPS) of 110 kmph and blasts through Kendrapara Road on the northern bank of the Mahanadi. As Santragachhi WAP4 powering the Duronto gains speed over the Mahanadi, she crosses the 12 coach Dhanamandal Bhubaneshwar Passenger, powered by a grubby looking Visakhapatnam WAM4. The heavy rains during the monsoon has ensured that a fair amount of the 2.1 km wide Mahanadi River is a blue pellucid channel, enhancing its beauty to the natural eye.

7 Wonders of India - Orissa : 3 - Hirakud River Dam
7 Wonders of India - Orissa : 3 - Hirakud River Dam. Located 15 km from Sambalpur, Orissa. The Hirakud Dam is built across the Mahanadi River, about 15 km from Sambalpur in the state of Orissa in India. The dam regulates the flow of the Mahanadi River and produces hydroelectricity through several hydroelectric plants. Hirakund dam is about 4.8 km long, bordered by earthen dykes on its left as well as right. Built in 1956, the dam is the world`s largest earthen dam. The dam helps control floods in the Mahanadi delta and irrigates 7500000 hectares of land. Hirakud dam was the first post- independence river valley project in India. It has been derived from ND TV. Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani Express Crosses the Gigantic Mahanadi River at Cuttack
On the last legs of its journey, the Erode WAP4 hauled 22824 Bhubaneshwar New Delhi Rajdhani Express rumbles across the gigantic Mahanadi River in the evening prior to entering Cuttack. Cuttack essentially is at the mouth of the Mahanadi delta and the river is 2.1 km in width at this point. It had rained the entire day since we left Chandil in Jharkhand and the entire east coast was under a canopy of thick grey and black monsoon clouds which showered the contents on us. The rain had finally stopped near Jajpur in Orissa but the clouds remained, dulling the landscape. Given the monsoons, the Mahanadi too was teeming across its shores, making it a magnificent sight to behold.

Falaknuma Express Cruises over the Mahanadi River and meets Puri New Delhi Express near Cuttack
Santragachhi WAP4 powered 12703 Howrah Secunderabad Falaknuma Express cruises across the Mahanadi River prior to Cuttack in Orissa. The Mahanadi starts forming its delta at this point as she approaches her final destination: the Bay of Bengal. The river in this respect is gigantic: stretched out over 2 km though much of it is dry at this point due to the winter season. As we snake out of the Mahanadi Bridge, 12815 Puri New Delhi Superfast Express hauled by another bright red Santragachhi WAP4 curls into the Mahanadi bridge on the down line.

IRFCA Kolkata Convention'12 DVD: High Speed River Crossings from Puri Duronto
The Puri Duronto tees off across the rivers of Orissa! First, on the list is the gigantic 2.1 km Mahanadi river, right after Cuttack. We crawl into the bridge at a sedate speed after negotiating Cuttack's yard and the Santragachhi WAP4 in charge of the Duronto accelerates aggressively across the river. By the time we exit the bridge, we are hitting the Maximum Permissible Speed (MPS) of 110 kmph. Halfway through the bridge, we are met by a grubby looking Visakhapatnam WAM4 with the Dhanmandal Bhubaneshwar Passenger. The next major river crossing after the Mahanadi is the 1.4 km Brahmani River, prior to Jajpur in Orissa. There is a nice curve on the approach to the bridge and we absolutely tear through it at the MPS of 110 kmph. There is absolutely no slackening of our speed on the Brahamani bridge as we simply thunder through it at top speed.

Incredible Orissa
Odisha (Odia: ଓଡ଼ିଶା), also known as Orissa, is a state of India, located on the east coast of India, by the Bay of Bengal. It is the modern name of the ancient nation of Kalinga, which was invaded by the Maurya Emperor Ashoka in 261 BC. The modern state of Odisha was established on 1 April 1936 at Kanika Palace, Cuttack, as a province in India, and consists predominantly of Odia speakers. 1 April is therefore celebrated as Utkal Divas (Odisha Day).
Odisha is the ninth largest state by area in India, and the eleventh largest by population. Odia is the official and most widely spoken language with 93.33% Odia speakers according to linguistic survey. Odisha has a relatively unindented coastline (about 480 km long) and lacks good ports, except for the deepwater facility at Paradip. The narrow, level coastal strip, including the Mahanadi River delta supports the bulk of the population. The interior of the state is mountainous and sparsely populated. Deomali at 1672 m is the highest point of the state. Odisha is subject to intense cyclones. The most intense one, in October 1999, Tropical Cyclone 05B caused severe damage and some 10256 deaths.
Odisha is home to the Hirakud Dam, near Sambalpur the longest earthen dam in the world. Odisha has several popular tourist destinations. Puri, Konark & Bhubaneswar are known as Golden triangle of eastern India. Puri, with the Jagannath temple near the sea (famous for Rath Yatra or the Car Festival), and Konark, with the Sun Temple, are visited by thousands of tourists every year. The Jagannath Temple of Puri, the Konark Sun Temple, the Lingaraj Temple, Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, Dhauligiri of Bhubaneshwar, Ashoka's famous Rock Edict at Jaugada near Berhampur city and the Barabati Fort of Cuttack are important in the archaeological history of India.

Orissa was originally inhabited by the aboriginal tribes, the Buiyas and Gonds. They confined themselves to the forest and hills when the Dravidian race settled here. Orissa was known as Kalinga in the early period. Kalinga is related with the greatest Mauryan empire ruler Ashoka who on seeing the horrors of war in his battle with the Kalingan army abandoned warfare and, embraced Buddhism. The Muslims Sultanate their influence on Orissa during the 13th and 14th centuries. This continued till 1568. This was followed by the rule of the Mughals which lasted till the death of Aurangzeb. After his death the Mughal power which declined bringing in the influence of the Nawab off Bengal who ruled it till he ceded this territory over Orissa began in about 1803 AD when the Marathas were suppressed by the diplomatic treaty's of the East India Company. ଆମ ସୁନ୍ଦର ଓଡିଶା
Odisha has a history spanning a period of over 5,000 years. Before Kalinga it was named as Udra or "Odra Desa". The Ancient Odra desa or Ordesa was limited to the valley of Mahanadi and to the lower course of Subarnarekha River. It comprised the whole of the present districts of Cuttack and Sambalpur and a portion of Midnapur. Bounded on the west by Gondwana, on the north by the wild hill states of Jaspur and Singhbhum, on the east by the sea and on the South by Ganjam, Odisha has a legendary history. The name Odia originated from Odra or Udra tribes that inhabited the central coastal belt (Khordha District and Nayagarh District) of modern Odisha. Odisha has also been the home of the Kalinga, Utkal, Mahakantara/Kantara and Kosal that played a particularly prominent role in the region's history, and one of the earliest references to the ancient Kalingas appears in the writings of Vedic chroniclers. In the 6th century BC, Vedic Sutrakara Baudhayana mentions Kalinga as being beyond the Vedic fold, indicating that Brahminical influences had not yet touched the land.Unlike some other parts of India, tribal customs and traditions played a significant role in shaping political structures and cultural practices right up to the 15th century, when Brahminical influences triumphed over competing traditions and caste differentiation began to inhibit social mobility and erode what had survived of the ancient republican tradition. Orissa state symbols-----
Orissa state symbols are the representations of the qualities of the state of Orissa. These symbols present a summary of the state, integrated as a part of the country of India. Among the most well known symbols of the state are the Sambar and the Blue Jay, the state animal and the state bird respectively.
The Sambar is a kind of deer which is found in abundance in the forests of Orissa. It has been associated for quite some time with this state since the times of the great kings who reigned over this realm. They were the prime prey of the royalty when they went out on 'Shikar' (hunting trips).
The Sambar was very useful to the royalty and the hoi-polloi alike. Sambar antlers were used to adorn the walls of the palaces. It was believed that using the skin of Sambar for the recitation of mythology was beneficial. Nowadays, as a state animal, it is protected in the multitude of sanctuaries which dot the landscape of Orissa.
The state bird of Orissa is the Blue Jay. Its striking azure color makes it very sought after by tourists, especially the bird watchers. They are hardily built, characterized by a large head, a light blue abdomen, which gives it the name and a blunt, square tail. It has pale and dark blue bands in its wings which shimmer during flight.
The state flower is the 'Ashoka' flower and the state tree is the imposing 'Ashwatha' tree. Both of them have significant roles in the Indian and Oriya mythology.
