Chinatown
In the tradition of Raymond Chandler and movies like The Big Sleep (Top 130: #24) and The Maltese Falcon (Top 130: #31), Chinatown is a near perfect movie which finds Private Investigator Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) plunged into a world of money, murder and... water. Robert Towne is the writer responsible for this, one of the best original screenplays ever written. And Roman Polanski (like Lean, in my previous post on Lawrence of Arabia) is brilliantly economic in his direction of scenes, trusting both the script and his actors. This particular scene between Gittes and Noah Cross (John Huston) is elegantly captured in one shot, avoiding the easy pitfalls of over-emphasizing the emotion of the scene. Polanski stays out of the way of the actors and keeps the camera back at a distance which brings to the surface the sheer banality of the evil communicated. It's also worth noting the composition of the scene at the 2:10 mark: the camera is behind Gittes who is framed to the left. This framing is used often and emphasizes that we only see what Gittes sees. We follow him through the convoluted web of lies and are never given information that he himself does not uncover. [Warning: major SPOILERs here. But if you haven't seen it, perhaps this will motivate you to rent or buy the DVD. Did everything from Gangster films to westerns to musicals to war films. Guy could do it all. Maltese Falcon and Treasure of the Sierra Madre would have to be my favorites however. Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. Mani Nasry has the passion to succeed, the curiosity and ingenuity required to lead and collaborate in an industry known for its impact and appeal, and the strength of character and work ethic to immerse himself in finding and telling an unforgettable story.

This Scene expresses- FEAR- noun: an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger (usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight). noun: a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness of danger, evil, pain, etc.; timidity; dread; terror; fright; apprehension. Terrify not your soul with vain imaginary fears. By realizing that you are the one feeding the fire, you can start to take control of your fears. Panic is a vicious cycle that can be broken. When you start to have irrational fears you need to take action quick. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing, which you think you cannot do." We must stop running away from things that frighten us, face our fears head on, and do the thing we fear the most. Most of the time we'll find out that the "thing" was not that scary after all. And the most amazing thing is that we hold the power to control our minds - we allow fear to dominate our lives or we choose to dominate fear. Those are our only two choices.

Orson Whales
This is more or less a birthday gift to myself. I've been drawing it on every page of Moby Dick (using two books to get both sides of each page) for months. The soundtrack is built from searching "moby dick" on You Tube (I was looking for Orson's Preacher from the the John Huston film), I couldn't find the preacher, but did find tons of Led Zep and drummers doing Bonzo and a little Orson reading from the Novel for a failed Italian T.V. film...... makes for a nice Melville in the end.
Cinqo de Mayo I turn Forty. Ahhhhhhh the French Champagne.

The Dead Part 1
John Huston's last film is a labor of love at several levels: an adaptation of perhaps one of the greatest pieces of English-language literature by one of Huston's favorite authors, James Joyce; a love letter to the land of his ancestors and the country where his children grew up; and the chance to work with his screenwriter son Tony and his actress daughter Anjelica. The film is delicate and unhurried, detailing a Christmas dinner at the house of two spinster musician sisters and their niece in turn-of-the-century Ireland, attended by friends and family. Among the visiting attendees are the sisters' nephew Gabriel Conroy and his wife Gretta. The evening's reminiscences bring up melancholy memories for Gretta concerning her first, long-lost love when she was a girl in rural Galway. Her recounting of this tragic love to Gabriel brings him to an epiphany: he learns the difference between mere existence and living.
