Agency
Canada (1980) A mysterious millionaire buys an ad agency and begins to replace its employees with his own people, who don't appear to be advertising types at all. A copywriter begins to suspect that the man isn't interested in selling products as much as he is in inserting his own sinister political beliefs into the commercials the agency runs on TV in order to subliminally brainwash an unsuspecting public into supporting the causes and candidates he wants them to. When the copywriter confides his suspicions to a friend and soon afterwards is mysteriously killed, his friend begins his own investigation.

1980's Agency Training Video
The Department had made several Training Videos for different agencies. I kept this VHS copy and although poor quality and very low tech by today's standards, it was very expensive and almost cutting edge in the early 1980's. The basic message and information is still correct for today! All the 'actors' in the video were department eployees at the time. I was there at the one employees house and watching the scenes being shot.

Milton Friedman PBS Free to Choose 1980 Vol 7 of 10 Who Protects the Consumer
Various government agencies have been created on the claim that they will protect the consumer. These agencies restrict freedom, stifle beneficial innovation, and become agents for the industries or groups they are intended to regulate. Friedman explains how the apparent chaos of the market place, the competition of many suppliers for business, is the best protection of consumer interests. PBS

SCREEN GODDESSES: Valerie Perrine
Valerie Perrine is one of those underappreciated talents who are mainly stuck in B fares. She shines in Agency (1980), dir. George Kaczender, an otherwise rather forgettable flick, although there's Robert Mitchum and Saul Rubinek in it. The hunk with the deodorant is Lee Majors. These are „cut it out!" excerpts.

Sophie Marceau
Sophie Marceau (French pronunciation: [sɔfi maʁso]; born 17 November 1966) is a French actress, who has appeared in 35 films. During her teens, Marceau achieved popularity by her debut films La Boum (1980) and La Boum 2 (1982), for which she received a César Award for Most Promising Actress. In addition to her French language films, she has worked in international films such as Braveheart (1995) and as a Bond Girl in The World Is Not Enough (1999). In February 1980, Marceau and her mother came across a model agency looking for teenagers. Marceau had photos taken at the agency, but did not think anything would come of it. At the same time, Françoise Menidrey, the casting director for Claude Pinoteau's La boum (1980), asked modeling agencies to recommend a new teenager for the project. After viewing the rushes, Alain Poiré, the director of the Gaumont Film Company, signed Marceau to a long-term contract. La boum was a hit movie, not only in France, where 4.5 million tickets were sold, but several other European countries and Japan. In 1981, Marceau made her singing debut with French singer François Valéry on record "Dream in Blue", written by Delanoë.[citation needed] In 1982, at the age of 15, Marceau bought back her contract with Gaumont for one million French francs. She borrowed most of the money. After starring in the sequel film La boum 2 (1982), Marceau focused on more dramatic roles, including Fort Saganne in 1984 with Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve ...

CIA's "Operation Cyclone" in Afghanstan in 1980's
Russia Today: www.russiatoday.com February 15, 2009, 9:46 Afghanistan: the US-made Soviet trap It is twenty years since Soviet troops pulled out of Afghanistan. 14000 Russians and more than a million Afghans were killed in the nine-year war, but these losses failed to secure peace in Afghanistan. In 1979 Afghanistan was in chaos. Its pro-Soviet government was trying to contain a revolt by religious rebels known as the Mujaheddin. Help from the Soviet Union was requested. It did not take long as the USSR was willing to protect its influence in the region, but what began as trepid assistance became a full blown war. Valery Bochkov, a former KGB Advisor in Afghanistan, remembers the first days of the war. He says the Soviet army was met with flowers: I cant say that we felt like occupants, he recalls. We had a long history with Afghanistan. I have relatives who lived there and I still keep in touch with people I met there. No one expected the war to go on for a decade. Over 14000 men would die, and almost half a million would be wounded or become sick. The majority of casualties were due to poor sanitary conditions. In addition the local climate was much different to what soldiers were used to back home. Many say the war in Afghanistan was the beginning of the end for the Soviet Union. The US, who felt it was losing its grip on the region, was brewing a policy to promote radical Islamist and anti-communist forces. By raising the political and military costs of the war in ...

1980 Chemical Control Site Fire and Cleanup USEPA
This hazardous materials site fire in April of 1980, helped lead to the passage of the Superfund legislation later that year. The Chemical Control Corporation (CCC) site consisted of a 2-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Elizabeth River. From 1970 to 1978, CCC operated as a hazardous waste storage, treatment, and disposal facility, accepting various types of chemicals including: acids, arsenic, bases, cyanides, flammable solvents, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), compressed gases, biological agents, and pesticides. Throughout its operations, CCC was cited for discharge and waste storage violations. In 1979, the State of New Jersey initiated a site cleanup that included removal of bulk solids and liquids, drums at and below the soil surface, gas cylinders, infectious wastes, radioactive wastes, highly explosive liquids, debris, tanks, and 3 feet of soil. Excavated soil areas were replaced with a 3-foot gravel cover. An explosion and fire in 1980 interrupted the site cleanup and created additional cleanup needs; the site was completely destroyed and reportedly, drums of burning waste launched into the air. Contaminated runoff from fire fighting efforts entered the Elizabeth River. After the fire and explosion, the preliminary cleanup was accelerated and was completed in 1981. The final cleanup took many more years. For more information on this site and cleanup, go to the EPA's NPL Listing history at: www.epa.gov . This cleanup was one of the first where first responder ...
