A Brief History of the English Language
topdocumentaryfilms.com Old English Beowulf lines 1 to 11, approximately AD 900 Hwæt! Wē Gār-Dena in geārdagum, þēodcyninga, þrym gefrūnon, hū ðā æþelingas ellen fremedon. Oft Scyld Scēfing sceaþena þrēatum, monegum mǣgþum, meodosetla oftēah, egsode eorlas. Syððan ǣrest wearð fēasceaft funden, hē þæs frōfre gebād, wēox under wolcnum, weorðmyndum þāh, oðþæt him ǣghwylc þāra ymbsittendra ofer hronrāde hȳran scolde, gomban gyldan. Þæt wæs gōd cyning! Which, as translated by Francis Gummere, means: Lo, praise of the prowess of people-kings of spear-armed Danes, in days long sped, we have heard, and what honor the athelings won! Oft Scyld the Scefing from squadroned foes, from many a tribe, the mead-bench tore, awing the earls. Since erst he lay friendless, a foundling, fate repaid him: for he waxed under welkin, in wealth he throve, till before him the folk, both far and near, who house by the whale-path, heard his mandate, gave him gifts: a good king he!

Visual Poetry in Frysk
Visual arrangement of Frisian poetry on moving canvas. [English subtitles] Featured on www.LondonPoetrySystems.com as August's 2012 video poem. Non-profit experiment of combining poetry with visual art. The poem is written by the Frisian poet Durk van der Ploeg, a dutch writer and poet. His work is mainly published in the Frisian language and he is a Knight of the Order of Oranje Nassau. The images portrait Frisian landscape architect Siem de Vlas working in his studio and visiting the grave of the famous dutch landscape architect Lucas Pieters Roodbaard (1782 - 1851). Roodbaard laid out many English landscape gardens in major cities in the Netherlands. The Frisian languages are a closely related group of Germanic languages, spoken by about 500000 members of Frisian ethnic groups, who live on the southern fringes of the North Sea in the Netherlands and Germany. The Frisian languages are the second closest living languages to English, after Scots. A reading of the Frisian poem 'Sy wennet yn in baarnend hûs'
This was filmed for Omrop Fryslân on the 5th of december in Leeuwarden during a Poetry evening. Below you can read the English translation of the poem by David Colmer: she lives in a burning house every storm takes a tile from the roof it's cold her teeth chatter someone outside thinks up new rules for traffic an old man cycles on newspapers stuffed under his clothes she walks out with a basket full of washing black sheets black blankets black pillowcase she sees the fields are burning too no point in going out it's better back inside the walls flames dancing on his portrait letters fall unasked through the door rustling down not reaching the mat her cat jumps onto her lap with a vegetable desire to be stroked she pours more meths over the photo albums wipes the ash from her glasses and reads and reads and reads

Nynke - ALTER (work in progress)
A first impression of the next album of Nynke! Nynke writes and sings her songs in Frisian, her native tongue. Frisian is an old, poetic language that is spoken in Friesland, which lies in the north of The Netherlands. For her new album ALTER she collaborates with the acclaimed Spanish guitarist/producer Javier Limón (Buika, Mariza, Yasmin Levi). He created a musical basis of flamenco rhythms & guitars, which they combine with the characteristic percussion of the Frisian percussionist/composer Sytze Pruiksma and the sound of the Noardske balke, an old traditional Frisian string instrument. The heartrending tones of some of the greatest instrumental soloists of the Arab world form the third element on the album. The album will appear in 2013, we'll keep you informed!
