Poorest Cities in the UK – Kingston Upon Hull
Why is Hull so poor? We have produced a video about the poorest cities in the UK. You’ve likely seen also what we or others have done about rankings of British cities as regards affordability, livability, beauty, crime, depravity, and cost of living. One thing is common in all these videos if you have seen them. Kingston Upon Hull has been ranked, not among the best cities to live in, the most beautiful cities, or the safest, but among the most deprived, the most dangerous, and the poorest. Enough has probably not been said in those videos to convince many fans of the city. That’s why we are devoting this video to only Kingston Upon Hull as one of the poorest cities in the United Kingdom.

Kingston upon Hull, commonly known as Hull, is a port city in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Located on the northern bank of the Humber Estuary, it was founded in the late 12th century. The city has a rich maritime history, and an important trading and fishing port for centuries. Although Hull's economy traditionally revolved around its port activities, it has diversified in recent years.

I Visited the 5 WORST ESTATES In HULL and It's SHOCKING!
In this video, we took a deep dive into the worst areas to live in Kingston Upon Hull based on a range of different factors.
Kingston Upon Hull has historically faced socioeconomic challenges, and in various indices, it has been ranked among the more deprived areas in the UK.
Despite its rich cultural and maritime heritage, the city has grappled with issues like unemployment, poor health outcomes, and educational attainment gaps, and the cost of living has hit some areas hard.
The decline of traditional industries, especially the fishing sector, has contributed to these challenges.
However, initiatives such as being named the UK City of Culture in 2017 have aimed to revitalize the area, bringing investment and attention to Hull.
The city's resilience is evident in its ongoing efforts ...

BOARDED UP HULL, City of Culture in 2024
Exploring Hull's Post-City of Culture Challenges: A Walk Through Its Boarded-Up High Street
Join me on a poignant journey through Hull, a city that once shone as the UK's City of Culture from 2017 to 2020. Despite its moment in the spotlight, Hull now grapples with the harsh realities of a national retail crisis.
While the City of Culture accolade promised a brighter future, the struggles of Hull's high street mirror those of many working-class cities and towns across the nation. The vibrancy of its past cultural achievements contrasts starkly with the desolation of boarded-up shops and deserted streets.
Yet, amidst the challenges, there's hope. The legacy of being City of Culture continues to reverberate, particularly within the thriving arts sector. However, the question looms: How ca...

The Vile City of Kingston upon Hull. Hello fellow explorers, glad to know that you’re re! Have you been to Kingston upon Hull? When last did you go there? And what was your experience? Please reserve your comments until after the end of this video so that you can focus on this engaging discussion. You can’t afford to miss a moment. From those of you living in this city, we expect mixed feelings about this discussion of the vile city of Kingston upon Hull. We know you love your dear city. But we can tell you for free that many of your fellow residents of the city consider it vile. Are they justified? This video analyses why many consider Kingston upon Hull a bad place to live.
About Kingston upon Hull
To start with, we’d love to crave your indulgence one more time to go this route. We’re only trying to involve everyone, while we understand that we can’t just have everybody on board. Nevertheless, no strata of our lovers deserve to be overlooked. Over time, we’ve found that some may not know a lot about a particular city we are exploring in the United Kingdom. For the sake of such people, therefore, let’s tell you a bit about Kingston upon Hull in this video.
Now, it is good to note at this moment that the name of the city Kingston upon Hull is often abbreviated to Hull. In this video, we will more often use the name Hull to describe the port city and unitary authority area you will find in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. So to let the name sink, we begin this way; Hull lies upon the River Hull, from where it derives its name, at its confluence with the Humber Estuary which is 40 kilometres inland from the North Sea and 60 kilometres south-east of the history county town of York.
Based on its 2021 population figure of 266,463, Hull is the 63rd-largest city in the UK and the 4th-largest city in Yorkshire and the Humber with Leeds, Sheffield, and Bradford being the first, second, and third respectively. Hull occupies a total area of 71.5 square kilometres, meaning every square kilometre of the area of this port city is to be shared by 3,633 Hullesians, as the people of Hull are called. Yes, that is the population density.
Hull in the Past
It is quite easy for anyone who knows next to nothing about the past of this city to assume that it is now at its best in all ramifications. However, for someone who knows one thing or the other about its past, the present state of the city may not be so impressive. The history of the location now known as the city of Hull began as the town of Wyke on Hull which was founded late in the 12th century. So River Hull has always been a factor in its naming. It was the brainchild of the monks of Meaux Abbey with the intent of establishing a port for exporting their wool.
In 1299, it was renamed kings-town upon Hull and became a market town, trading centre, military supply port, fishing and whaling centre, and industrial metropolis. It is all too easy to corrupt “Kings-town” to “Kingston.” You can only imagine the prosperity such a geographical location would be enjoying even before gaining city status in 1897. During the English Civil Wars, the city was an early theatre of battle. Its 18th-century MP, William Wilberforce, was at the forefront of the struggle for the abolition of the slave trade in Britain.

We take a walk from the Premier Inn hotel building near The Deep along through Hull Old Town, down Scale Lane and Silver Street. We then continue our Hull tour down Friargate and Whitefriargate until we reach the Beverley Gate and Princes Quay.
From here we head across to Queen Victoria Square and the new Hull Maritime Museum and then down Jameson Street until we reach Hull Railway Station.
In 2017 Hull was given the prestigious 'City Of Culture' award by the department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
I really enjoyed filming this one. I feel Hull has so much to offer but didn't really have enough time to spend there to discover it so I will definitely be back!
Hull is a popular University city and you will often hear how great life is here as a student, So if you're looking to come to the Uni here in Hull take a watch and check out the city centre streets, shops, bars and restaurants as well as the culture, the museums and the marina.

About Kingston Upon Hull
Please permit us to come down to the level of those who may not have seen the video we did about the city and those who need to know one or two things about the city we’re about to analyze. Thus, we’re starting by introducing the city of Kingston Upon Hull to you. This is a port city with a unitary authority type of government located in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Usually abbreviated to Hull, the city lies upon the River Hull, its namesake, at its confluence with the Humber Estuary, 40 kilometers inland from the North Sea, 80 kilometers east of Leeds, 55 kilometers southeast of York, and 87 kilometers northeast of Sheffield.
The total land area of the city that got its city status in 1897 is 71.5 square kilometers. Going by the latest official population estimate of 259,778 which ranked it 64th in the country, the city’s population density is fair at 3,633 people per square kilometer. In the whole borough of Yorkshire, not just the ceremonial county of East Riding, and the Humber region, it’s the fourth-largest city, even though very poor. People from Kingston Upon Hull are called Hullensians.
Summary of Several Rankings
An article recently published in The Guardian international entitled, “To Hull and back: the rebirth of Britain’s poorest city,” quotes Naomi Clayton of the Centre for Cities as agreeing that Hull fits in the national picture of the second poorest city in less than a decade ago. She reeled out a set of damning statistics, including the city having the lowest rate of employment and the highest ratio of Job Seekers’ Allowance claimants. She also said Hull is the UK’s poorest city in terms of the weekly wage and that it has a major skills shortage and low rates of business startups. According to this official, it has a high crime rate and a very low percentage of residents with, at least, NVQ4 qualifications.
Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also indicates that this city has one of the lowest house prices for all types of property among towns and cities in England and Wales. The ONS also ranks Hull very low in areas of the number of businesses, industries, and trades. That’s why its data, covering employment rates, earnings, and hours of work, the body says Hull is a poor city.
Other figures given by a highly credible Legatum Institute, a charity based in London, that releases the annual global Prosperity Index are also damning for Kingston Upon Hull. According to the Institute, the city performed poorly below standard and expectation on prosperity in 6 of the 7 pillars of the Index. It adds that the data marks a deep-woven pattern of poverty and deprivation and it goes beyond economic circumstances. The Institute further states that the city was found to be the worst for essential services overall and it ranks second worst for schools and education centers and third worst for the fire-fighting staff strength.

The city is known for its cultural landmarks, such as the historic Old Town, the Museum Quarter, and the Hull Maritime Museum. In 2017, Hull was named the UK City of Culture, which boosted its profile and led to significant investment in arts and infrastructure.
Hull also has a notable sporting scene, with teams like Hull City AFC (football) and Hull FC (rugby league). The city's unique architectural highlights include the Humber Bridge and The Deep, an acclaimed aquarium.
Despite facing economic challenges, Hull continues to evolve, blending its historical heritage with modern developments and cultural initiatives.

The city's resilience is evident in its ongoing efforts to adapt, diversify its economy, and address these challenges head-on.

4. East Park
Hull's largest open space, dog-friendly East Park is a delight to explore. Notable features of this lovely park include an animal compound with deer, wallabies, rheas, and peacocks, as well as a variety of native Australian birds. It also hosts regular concerts and other events such as the "Hull Show" in warmer weather.
Opened in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, this Grade-II-listed park is a vibrant green space encompassing some 130 acres of parkland. Also well worth a visit is nearby Queens Gardens, with its lovely floral displays, fountains, and ponds.
3. Burton Constable Hall & Grounds
An easy 25-minute drive northeast of the Hull Maritime Museum, Elizabethan-era Burton Constable Hall makes for a fun excursion from the city center. The oldest parts of this sprawling manor house date back to the 12th century, and the same family – the Constables – have lived here for well over 400 years.
Highlights of a visit include seeing the home's well-preserved 18th- and 19th-century interiors, including the spectacular staircase, and a rare "cabinet of curiosities." Be sure to allocate some time to explore the estate's impressive 300-acre grounds. Afterward, splurge on a memorable afternoon tea.
2. Waters' Edge Country Park & Visitor Centre
Paying a visit and exploring Waters' Edge Country Park & Visitor Centre is one of the best free things to do in Hull. Located on the south bank of the Humber River, this wildlife and nature sanctuary is located just steps away from the Humber Bridge. Yet its proximity to this major Hull attraction doesn't detract from a visit. The views over this remarkable feat of engineering are quite dramatic, especially when framed by the natural setting of the park.
In addition to the fun-to-walk trails and boardwalks, be sure to pop into the Visitor Centre, which features fun activities for kids, as well as a playground. There's also an on-site shop and café.
1. Barton-upon-Humber
The town of Barton-upon-Humber – usually simply referred to as Barton – is just 11 miles from Hull on the south side of the Humber, a trip that involves crossing the Humber Bridge.
Barton is home to the 1,000-year-old St. Peter's Church, notable for its more than 2,800 burials from Anglo-Saxon to Victorian times. Now under the auspices of English Heritage (with limited opening hours), its Anglo-Saxon tower and baptistery have helped make it one of the most studied churches in England.
Other attractions in historic Barton include the Baysgarth House Museum, the Wilderspin National School Museum, and 51 Fleetgate, believed to be the oldest residential house in North Lincolnshire.

However, the question looms: How can Hull repurpose its vast retail spaces for greater community benefit?
Together, let's delve into the heart of Hull's urban landscape, reflecting on its past glories and contemplating the path forward in the wake of economic upheaval.
