The Bishop of Durham, , who is due to be formally announced as the new Archbishop of Canterbury, initially resisted his calling to the Church, according to a friend.
Reverend Sally Hitchiner said that he eventually decided to leave the oil industry, in which he was very successful, to pursue his vocation.
She also told BBC Breakfast that the death of his baby daughter in a car crash in 1983 was a key part of who he was.

New Archbishop of Canterbury to be announced
The new Archbishop of Canterbury's going to be formally announced and it's being widely reported that a shining star in the Church of England, Justin Welby, Bishop of Durham has accepted the position. According to the BBC he's a traditionalist, who's in favour of women bishops but conservative on gay marriage.
Bishop Welby took the post of Bishop of Durham in July 2011 and he gave this insight into his feelings about being back in the city, where he studied theology
Interviewer from July 2011 asks: 'What are you beginning to looking forward to most with this role?' Bishop of Durham Justin Welby replies: 'That's very simple, I'm looking fed to being around, just being with people in the Diocese, What's fun is hanging out with people, listening, participating and being part of the life of a community. And I think one of the great thigns about this job is to be able to hang out with people whether it's in a cold church hall with half a dozen people or in a large gathering or best of all in a pub somewhere, it's great to just have an opportunity to be around, hear what people think and engage what people are saying.'
Bishop Welby used to be an executive in the oil industry but his faith was strengthened after the death of his 7-month-old daughter in a car crash. He retrained as an Anglican priest and was ordained in his 30s.
So just like his brave abseiling exploits for charity, he'll be making a huge leap into the shoes of his friend, Rowan Williams (he was William's special envoy to Africa). Bishop Welby will be become the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury, and the nominal leader of some 77 million Anglicans worldwide.

It is by no means certain how many of the world's 80 million Anglicans know about their new spiritual leader, Justin Welby. He is wealthy, privileged, went to Eton school near London, same as the British prime minister. Years ago he was an oil trader in Nigeria, a job which might not imply moral scruple. yet he turned his back on money and became a priest, spending long periods at the sharp end of conflicts in Africa. He is for women bishops but does not like gay marriage. His evangelism and campaigning should make him popular in Africa, which has the biggest Anglican community in the world. He also expressed sympathy for the Occupy movement in the UK, which was camped outside St Paul's Cathedral, and he now sits on a government committee trying to sort out a more ethical banking structure. Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from London.

My Dad is the Archbishop! Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Justin Welby
His style is self-deprecating, his family background surprisingly colourful. The great unanswered question, though, is just why did oilman Justin Welby throw up his six-figure salary and executive lifestyle to become a priest?
Yesterday, 56-year-old Dr Welby — ordained barely 20 years ago and appointed Bishop of Durham only last autumn — was named the new Archbishop of Canterbury, the Church of England's most senior post and spiritual head of 77 million Anglicans worldwide.
As Damascene conversions go, Dr Welby's story must be classified as positively Biblical. The child of a broken home (his parents divorced when he was just three), he went to Eton and Cambridge, then spent years working in Paris and London, climbing the ladder in the tough but rewarding oil business.
Then in 1989, at the age of 33, he threw it all up to enter Cranmer Hall theological college in Durham, and by 1992 he was a curate. (Given his appointment this week, it is entertaining to note that the late Bishop of Kensington, John Hughes, when approached by Justin Welby, said: 'There is no place for you in the Church of England. I have interviewed a thousand for ordination, and you don't come in the top thousand.')
At a Lambeth Palace press conference to announce his appointment yesterday, the Archbishop elect signalled the start of a battle with David Cameron over same-sex marriage, declaring his opposition to the Coalition's plans to allow gay couples to marry
His confirmation, in a single sentence, that he backs a strong line against gay marriage means an inevitable clash between the Church and the Government, though he went on to say: 'I am always averse to the language of exclusion.
His new role is affirmation of his meteoric rise, on the back of self-effacing observations such as 'Let's be clear, I'm one of the thicker bishops in the Church of England'; and, as he rose to make his maiden speech in the House of Lords last spring, a declaration that he was 'astonished' to be there at all.
This self-deprecating sense of wonder at his lofty position is clearly shared by his daughter Katherine, 26. On her public Twitter page yesterday, Miss Welby, a former police officer who now works for a Christian charity and lives in London, tweeted: 'WHAT THE.....!??!??! MY DAD is the new ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY???!! Nobody tells me nuffink. (grumbles to self in corner of office).'
Later, she added: 'My dad is the Archbishop of Canterbury to be. This is a very surreal moment!! Love this man!'

Justin Welby next Archbishop of Canterbury
The Right Rev Justin Welby, who became a Bishop just last year as the Bishop of Durham, has been confirmed as the next Archbishop of Canterbury. He replaces Rowan Williams who is retiring in December after 10 years. Bishop Welby will become the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury and the spiritual leader of the 77 million-strong Anglican Communion.
Speaking at a press conference the Bishop Welby, says his appointment to the post is both "astonishing and exciting." He will take up his new job of the Church of England's most senior post vat a ceremony at Canterbury Cathedral on 21 March 2013.
Prime Minister David Cameron confirmed Bishop Welby's appointment via Twitter. He said 'His appointment follows much speculation but he then went on to joke: "Well, that was the best-kept secret since the last cabinet reshuffle."
But what is the opinion of this new Archbishop of Canterbury so far? Well, he has already addressed several controversial issues, including stating he would be voting in favour of ordaining women bishops in the Church of England, which has been a divisive issue in recent years.
He enjoys great praise and recommendation from the outgoing Archbishop Rowan Williams, who said he was 'delighted by the appointment and that he would bring to this office both a rich pastoral experience and a keen sense of international priorities, for Church and world."
