Iran does not want nuclear weapons but if it did, no world power could prevent it from obtaining one, Iran's Supreme Leader said on Saturday (February 16), according to Iranian media. The United States and some of its Western allies suspect Iran may be trying to develop a nuclear weapons capability under the guise of a civilian atomic energy program, a charge Iran rejects. Iranian officials have said in the past that a religious decree by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei banning nuclear weapons is binding on the Islamic Republic, and Khamenei has repeatedly said Iran is not seeking an atomic bomb. "We believe nuclear arms must be eliminated and we don't want to build nuclear arms," Khamenei said on Saturday morning, in comments published by the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA). "But if we did not believe this and decided to have nuclear arms, no power could stand in our way," he added. The United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany are due to meet Iran for talks in Kazakhstan on Feb. 26 to tackle a decade-old row that has already produced four rounds of UN sanctions against Iran. Separate talks between Iran and the UN nuclear watchdog agency this week failed to produce a deal on reviving an investigation into Iranian research that could be used to produce nuclear weapons. Israel, widely assumed to be the region's only nuclear-armed power, has said is ready to take military action to stop Iran developing a bomb, raising fears the stand-off could ...

The UN Security Council has issued a stern rebuke to North Korea over its third nuclear test - as it held an emergency meeting in response to the test, which was in defiance of international regulations. The organisation says it plans to beef-up the sanctions already in place for the country's previous atomic exercises. China was among those who criticised North Korea's nuclear test. However, war correspondent and columnist Eric Margolis thinks the relations between the two allies are unlikely to sour. North Korea 3rd Nuclear Test North Korea Officially Launches Nuclear Test 2013 SEOUL, South Korea — The Politburo of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party has called for the continued testing of long-range rockets despite the condemnation of previous tests by the United Nations Security Council, the country's official media reported Tuesday. In a meeting on Monday, the Politburo, the main decision-making body of the party, said that more rocket tests could be an appropriate way to celebrate the 65th anniversary of North Korea's founding and the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. North Korea declared itself as an independent state on Sept. 9, 1948, three years after the liberation of the Korean Peninsula from Japanese colonial rule. It also marks July 27, the day when the truce was signed 60 years ago to end the Korean War. North Korea celebrates those dates each year with hostile statements directed at countries it considers its enemies, as well as with festivities aimed at increasing domestic support for its top leaders. The Monday meeting was the first time the Politburo had convened since July 2012, when it decided to dismiss Ri Yong-ho, a senior army general. That dismissal turned out to be the beginning of a round of political purges under the new supreme leader, Kim Jong-un. The 10-point decision adopted at the meeting on Monday called for a huge military parade in Pyongyang, the capital, to mark the anniversary of the July 27 truce, as well as the ...

A Tibetan man in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu set himself on fire today (February 13), in protest of communist oppression of Tibetans. According to the International Campaign for Tibet, this marks 100 Tibetans to self-immolate since 2009. The identity of the protester is unknown but his message was clear. Witnesses say he chanted anti-China slogans as he set himself on fire. The man was rushed to the hospital, and according to Free Tibet, is in critical condition. This is not the first time a Tibetan has self-immolated outside of China. Last March, a 26-year-old man set himself on fire in New Delhi while Chinese leader Hu Jintao was visiting India. This latest self-immolation protest comes as Tibetans marked the Tibetan Lunar New Year, which was on February 11th. The Tibetan government in exile has asked Tibetans not to celebrate the occasion, in solidarity with those being suppressed inside China. Some Tibetan groups are also marking another occasion. February 13th is the 100th anniversary since the 13th Dalai Lama declared Tibet's independence from China's Qing Dynasty rulers.
