Soul Food (1997) Movie Trailer
Soul Food (1997) Movie Trailer: Matriarch Mama Joe (Irma P. Hall) has held her family together for 40 years around a Sunday dinner of soul food. When diabetes hospitalizes her, the dinners stop and tensions among her three daughters start to break the family apart. Two of the sisters feud continuously: Teri (Vanessa Williams) is jealous of Maxine's (Vivica A. Fox) marriage and irritated that everyone assumes her corporate salary is open to the rest of the family's uses. Maxine resents Teri's bossiness and insensitivity to family tradition. Bird, the youngest, newly married to an ex-con, accepts a favor from an old lover that leads to her husband's arrest. Mama Joe's grandson Ahmad cooks up a scheme to bring the family together, back to the table.

Laurel Avenue - Sheila, Fletcher & Anthony
Laurel Avenue the two-part TV cable movie (1993) and Soul Food (1997) movie have strong character parallels. Sheila Arnett (Michelle Williams) like the character Bird in the Soul Food movie is the youngest daughter who is bright and and a goal setter. Both characters draw and enable the 'bad boys' in their lives. Anthony (Gary Dourdan) and a troubled High School basketball star (Ulysses Zachary) are her suitors. Written by: Michael Henry Brown Directed by: Carl Franklin The parallels are too many to count between the two movies. I'll leave the rest to you.
