And do they really apply to all people? This is the first part of the series "Focus Human Rights". It consists of this overview clip an three more specific clips for each of the three dimensions of Human Rights. Check out our Channel for the other clips! To answer your questions on I talk today we have Jan Egeland deputy executive director of Human Rights Watch and director of its European operation. Mr. Egeland is joining us from Oslo. Hello thank you for being on the programme. Let's have the first question which gets to the heart of your activity." "Good morning, I'm Loic from Brussels, here in Belgium, and I'd like to know how HRW works and what exactly it does." Alex Taylor: "A very simple question what does Human Rights Watch do exactly and how do you function." Jan Egeland:"Well Human Rights Watch is a worldwide organisation that researches documents human rights abuse, violence against individuals, lawlessness against people then we publish this so everybody can find out what is the truth and finally we advocate for change, that there should be the rule of law that everybody should have their human rights defended." Alex Taylor: "How do you guarantee that what people tell you is the truth because a lot of people could invent stuff." Jan Egeland: "Well we recruit we believe the best of the best. As researchers being experts on countries, they go to the field, the go to Syria, the go to Russia, they go to South Africa they go to China they go to all of the places where there is ...

Lynn Hunt: Inventing Human Rights
Lynn Hunt, UCLA Professor of Modern European History, discusses the genesis of human rights, a concept that only came to the forefront during the eighteenth century. When the American Declaration of Independence declared all men are created equal and the French proclaimed the Declaration of the Rights of Man during their revolution, they were bringing a new guarantee into the world. But why then? How did such a revelation come to pass? Series: "Walter H. Capps Center Series" [3/2008] [Humanities] [Show ID: 14182]

Catholic Church vs. Women with Human Rights Activist Fr. Roy Bourgeois
www.facebook.com twitter.com thelip.tv EPISODE SYNOPSIS: The Catholic Church still officially regards the inclusion of women as priests as an abomination on the same scale as sexual abuse. Fr. Roy Bourgeois has taken a fervent position against this gender inequality in the church, much to the chagrin of his church brethren, and is being excommunicated for it. He joins us and puts the debate in context of human rights, and also shares his history of working against the notorious School of the Americas. Fr. Roy provides examples of how the battlegrounds have changed in the struggle to have autonomous governments in latin america that don't employ US-trained death squads. GUEST BIO: Fr. Roy Bourgeois is a graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology. After college he served in the Navy for four years. One year was spent on shore duty in Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart. Following his time in the Navy, Fr. Roy was ordained a Catholic priest in 1972 and went to work in Bolivia for five years. He stayed until he was arrested and forced to leave the country. Following this Father Roy involved himself in US policy in El Salvador after four American churchwomen were raped and killed by El Salvadoran soldiers. This led him to become an outspoken critic of US foreign policy in Latin America. Since then, he has spent over four years in US federal prisons for non-violent protests against the training of Latin American ...
