Condemned: Criminal Origins (2006) (PC) (Monolith Productions)
Many shooter fans hold Monolith in high esteem, but I've honestly never been that impressed by their games. Blood was certainly an important Duke 3D-era shooter...but their other supposed classics such as Shogo, No One Lives Forever, Aliens vs Predator 2 and FEAR are all more competent than great in my opinion. The slick 60's nostalgia of NOFL and over-the-top anime self-parodies of Shogo deserve the most praise for being such brave departures from conventional shooter norms in stylistic terms, but when it comes to the actual gameplay I can hardly remember a single level from either NOLF1 or NOLF2. And Shogo, well, let's just say that game hasn't aged particularly well. Condemned: Criminal Origins was a shooter/beat em up hybrid I thought about buying when it came out four years ago but ultimately I decided against it since I'm rather sick of the gory nonsense which counts for "psychological" horror in movies and games these days. When Direct2Drive had a sale some time ago and practically gave the game away for two or three Euros I nonetheless decided to pick it up but I haven't tried it out until now.

Blood II: The Chosen (1998) (PC) (Monolith Productions)
While not all GOG releases are genuinely *good* old games, some not-great titles nonetheless feel like entirely legitimate additions to the GOG catalogue simply in virtue of being patched up to work effortlessly on today's operating systems. Admittedly, with DOS games there aren't really any true digital preservation issues left these days since DOSBox is free, stable and fairly easy to use; but for those tricky old Windows games from the pre-XP era every bit of patching is much appreciated. Case in point is Blood 2: The Chosen, one of the exceedingly few older games which I - despite serious attempts - have personally never been able to run on a modern computer at all in its original disc-based version. The actual game is an underwhelming LithTech-powered sequel to Monolith's 1997 FPS classic, but it's still kind of nice to know that the game is back in playable state even for those of us who don't happen to have Windows 98 installed on one of our computers...

Blood: E1M1: Cradle to Grave (PC) (1997) (Monolith Productions)
Classic FPS shooter, Blood. Blood is a PC game developed by 3D Realms and Monolith Productions and distributed by GT Interactive. Development was underway at 3D Realms in parallel with a number of other well-known titles. Following the success of Duke Nukem 3D, development progress was made public starting in June 1996 with weekly updates on their website. It was originally scheduled for release in early 1997. On January 22, 1997, a press release announced that all rights had been sold to Monolith so that 3D Realms "could focus efforts on Shadow Warrior,"[citation needed] another Build engine game slated for release the same year. Released on May 31, 1997, Blood utilized an enhanced version of the Build engine from Ken Silverman which featured the addition of voxels. The game falls in the first-person shooter category, and has an arsenal of bizarre and nefarious weapons, numerous enemies and liberal amounts of gore. The Blood franchise was continued with two official expansion packs titled Plasma Pack (developed by Monolith) and Cryptic Passage (developed by Sunstorm Interactive). Later, the sequel titled Blood II: The Chosen was released on October 31, 1998. In terms of copyrights and ownership, Monolith sold the rights for Blood to GT Interactive. GTI was later acquired by Infogrames which has since been renamed to Atari. In recent years it seems that Warner Bros. Entertainment owns the Blood trademark.
