London night time lapse/stop-motion - Fleet Street to Holborn Viaduct
London night time lapse/stop-motion - Fleet Street to Holborn Viaduct
Sequence of photographs turned into a video. ______ ROUTE: Starting at Aldwych, along Fleet st to St Paul's Cathedral, to the Bank of England, to the Lloyd's and Gherkin buildings, then along Bishopsgate to London Wall, to the Museum of London, then finishing at Holborn Viaduct. ____________________ EQUIPMENT / METHOD: I used an Olympus EPL1 camera with a Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1,7 pancake lens in continuous shot mode. I attached a fisheye lens for most of the footage to capture more scenery. NB As the EPL1 doesn't take a shutter release cable I used a makeshift device that physically holds the shutter down. I turned my bike into a tripod dolly and wheeled it around London, with some bits taken fully hand hand for greater control [these are the more wobbly scenes]. ______ SOFTWARE: I used quicktime pro to convert the image sequence into a video, then I edited the video using 'Open Shot Video Editor' [a free Linux program], then I used the deshaker plugin filter in Virtual Dub to smooth it out a bit. _____ MUSIC: I couldn't find a piece of music that fitted the video, so I made one myself. Hope you like it. Here it is on Soundcloud: snd.sc --

Holborn Viaduct poor cycle infrastructure
Holborn Viaduct poor cycle infrastructure
Example of poor cycle infrastructure. Have a nice wide road, narrow it to one lane, then widen it and put a cycle lane in. Update: As I was reminded in the comments below these chicanes were put in as part of the 'Ring of Steel' around the City of London to stop terrorist bombs. But in other locations such as Queen Victoria Street they put a segregated cycle lane in as well.

Silly Cyclist - Bad filtering between HGV and coach on Holborn
A silly cyclist on Holborn Viaduct. In far too much of a rush to try and filter past when waiting was the best option. She did turn her head when I shouted but looked over her right shoulder. Never try and filter between too large vehicles as if one of them moves off you might get trapped. She was ok as I caught her up later on Kingsway.

Ralph Vaughan Williams - The Voice out of the Whirlwind (1947)
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) The Voice out of the Whirlwind (Motet for Chorus and Orchestra) (1947) Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra David Lloyd-Jones, conductor In 1946, the Musicians Benevolent Fund, giving effect to a long-standing aspiration of the recently deceased Sir Henry Wood, revived regular annual St Cecilia Day services in London, initially at St Sepulchres without Newgate on Holborn Viaduct. From 1947 new works were commissioned every year, starting with the Vaughan Williams motet The Voice out of the Whirlwind, though then with organ accompaniment. The choir assembled consisted of representatives from His Majestys Chapel Royal and Canterbury Cathedral, as well as St Pauls Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, underlining the festivals standing from the outset. It was first performed at St Sepulchres on 22nd November 1947. Vaughan Williams sturdy motet takes words from the book of Job as God speaks to Job from out of the whirlwind. He adapted the music from the Galliard of the Sons of the Morning in scene VIII of his masque for dancing, Job, and later orchestrated it for the Leith Hill Festival, at Dorking on 16th June 1961. It is remarkable how well the words fit what was intended as a balletic score, making one wonder how far Vaughan Williams had associated words and music in the first place. ~ Lewis Foreman Texts taken from the Book of Jacob 38, 1-11 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth ...

November 9th 2011 - 'It's a Revolt ' - Students march in London
November 9th 2011 - 'It's a Revolt ' - Students march in London
From: Russia Today 'It's a Revolt!' Students march in London Published: 09 November, 2011, 16:30 Edited: 09 November, 2011, 19:33 Students took to the streets of London en masse on Wednesday to fight government funding cuts and a massive hike in tuition fees. But rubber bullets and police intimidation threaten to turn the demonstration into a bloody affair. The demonstrators gathered at the University of London in the center of the city around noon. Some 10000 people were expected to take part in the march against the privatization of education and other attacks on the welfare state. However RT's Ivor Bennett, who is reporting from the scene, estimated that only several thousand had shown up as the march began. Other estimates put the total number of protestors at 5000. It has also been reported that a group of protesters managed to break away from the main route, where they went on to erect around two dozen tents in the heart of the city on Trafalgar Square. Otherwise, the police have thus far been successful in managing the march, keeping protestors away from potent symbols like the Bank of England and the London Stock Exchange. No reports of violence or arrests have surfaced since the march began over two hours ago. Having been criticized for their mishandling of previous protests, the police announced they would be out in force this time around. With 4000 officers being deployed, the run-up to the march was fraught with tension. rt.com ...

Edwardian London
Edwardian London
Grimy, cold, imperial London on a winter's day in the 1910's. Horse traffic mixes chaotically with motor cars, a military procession marches down the Mall, men in top hats make for the entrance of Buckingham Palace, and Tower Bridge closes after admitting a steamer into the Pool of London. From their monuments, the effigies of Victoria and Albert look down towards it all.
