The Ship That Used a Strange Weapon in an Unexpected Battle
In December 1943, HMS Duke of York, a behemoth of the Royal Navy, navigated through the severe Arctic winter weather, but the Allied convoy was about to be attacked under the cover of the icy darkness.
Lurking somewhere in the shadows lay one of the most wanted German commerce raiders: battleship Scharnhorst, a swift hunter armed with 11-inch guns.
The thick fog and howling winds leveled the playing field against Duke of York’s superior 14-inch guns. Nonetheless, she held a critical advantage: her superior radar technology.
As the ghostly silhouettes of the warships drew near, tension mounted for both crews. The British radar screens flickered with the promise of contact, and the silence of the Arctic was abruptly shattered by the roar of Duke of York’s accurate radar-directed gunfire....

HMS Duke of York - Hunting German Battleships in the Arctic
Some ships are famous for long careers. Some ships are famous for how they sank, often in catastrophic- or darkly amusing -manners. And some ships are famous for one battle, a moment of glory that overshadows everything else.
HMS Duke of York very much falls into that third category. Her wartime career was nothing to write home about, for the most part, consisting largely of escort duty. And her peacetime duty was both short *and* uneventful.
But that one battle with the German battleship Scharnhorst? That one battle will forever shape discussion about Duke of York, and with very good reason.

The Duke of York is a storied Royal Navy Battleship who gets to claim being one of the few battleships during WWII to actually engage another battleship in combat. Her history is great, and her in game persona is very similar. With usable AP and HE, and good concealment AND hydro, she's quite capable in more aggressive roles than her tech tree sister ship King George V can be. That makes it a fun ship to play but she rewards proper positioning and angling the most out of any of the T7 BB's. If you are not going to be playing with a level of caution and high situational awareness, the ship can be very hard to play well.

Insulting or intimidating behaviour of any kind, will NOT be tolerated. Nor will racism, sexism or any form of abuse or aggression directed towards a particular group or individual.
Swearing / profanity is not allowed. We have a mixture of age-groups in chat. Opinions will differ as to which words are acceptable and which are not. Please respect the opinions of others in this matter.
This includes abbreviations and words disguised with symbols and numbers.
Do not discuss or give personal details (especially email address, phone numbers or street address).
Have a suitable ONE username which respects the above rules. Multiple accounts are not allowed.
Additionally, the following guidelines will be applied at the discretion of the moderators :
This is railway-themed chatroom. Whilst chat needn't be "on-topic" all the time, we expect users to exercise some common sense and avoid posting pointless comments which are of no interest to others. Off-topic subjects shouldn't be allowed to take-over the chatroom, since that discourages the on-topic chat.
The cameras are not there to allow us to criticise or police those that work on the railway. Discussion of that sort is not appropriate.
Events involving injury or death on the railway are not suitable topics for discussion.
Politics, race, religion, sex and sexual orientation are not suitable topics for a rail-themed chatroom. Whilst these will inevitably be touched-upon in passing, opinions must not be expressed about these divisive topics.
Promotion of products and services, especially those which compete with Railcam UK, are not allowed.
Repeated links to sites, including YouTube, Flickr and Facebook pages are considered spamming and not allowed.
Deliberately spreading false information or "gen" will not be tolerated.
Use English only. Use a translator if required. Do not post in CAPITALS - this is interpreted as shouting.
Chat needs to be inclusive. It's for everyone to use, so do not make it about you.
The above lists are not exhaustive and moderators may ask you to stop a particular subject or pattern of behaviour - please respect such a request.
In all but extreme cases, a moderator will warn any user who does not follow the above rules & guidelines before resorting to a "timeout" or ban. Bans will usually be short in the first instance, but can be permanent where it is warranted.
Derogatory comments towards the moderators, Railcam or any of the partners and feeds will not be tolerated.
Moderator decision is final. If you disagree, email us. DO NOT argue about it in chat. Do not openly criticise moderators in chat. That will only result in a ban

York UK 2024, BEST 15 things to do on a York day trip.
York is a beautiful, medieval city in North Yorkshire that makes for an excellent day trip or UK city break. In this video we will share with you 15 of the many things you can do in on your visit to York. I have added chapters to the video so if you would like to skip ahead to a particular section then you can do so easily.
We hope you enjoy this York, England, The Shambles to Jorvik Viking Centre 4K Historic Walking Tour UK.
We start this tour of York, England in the medieval street known as The Shambles. A favourite with Harry Potter fans due to the magic inspired shops along its route, this leads us into Shambles Market before heading to King's Square - site of York's Chocolate Story. We follow Low Petergate to discover the beautiful Gothic Cathedral and on to the Jorvik Viking Centre. Join us and stroll through the streets of the old town centre, where we see the many, restaurants, cafes and traditional pubs. Our 4K historic walking tour finishes at the River Ouse, just outside of the old town.
THE TOOLS WE USE ON A DAILY BASIS
🔸 Camera - https://geni.us/EkIMyhK [We shoot all our footage on this tiny camera]
🔸 Microphone - https://geni.us/f1bN [We use this for all our interviews]
🔸 MacBook Pro - https://geni.us/3h8kesm [Powerful and light for easy travelling]
🔸 YouTube SEO - https://geni.us/ygkIzyA [TubeBuddy cuts our time in YT Studio in half!]

If you're looking for the best of York, then you've come to the right place. In this travel guide, we'll showcase the best things to do in York, including top attractions, where to eat, and hidden gems even locals don't know about. We'll also explore the top Christmas Markets in York, and take a day trip to the Spa Town of Harrogate, which is around half an hour away.
York is steeped in history and has been the favourite haunt of many royals and nobles over the years. The city began as a Roman fortress around two millennia ago and today vestiges of the past can be found down the cobbled lanes and amongst the timber-framed buildings.
