By Saturday, Airlines had cancelled more than 5300 flights through Saturday, and the three major airports serving New York City, as well as Boston's Logan Airport, closed. Nemo Blizzard 2013 Snow Storm Northeast Shuts Down as Blizzard Blows Through 500000 Power Outage
Nemo Blizzard 2013 Snow Storm Northeast Shuts Down as Blizzard Blows Through 500000 Power Outage A blizzard of possibly historic proportions battered the Northeast Friday into Saturday, and forecasters feared as much as two feet of snow and strong winds could shut down densely populated cities such as New York and Boston, where cars were ordered off the streets. State officials declared states of emergencies throughout the region, and utilities estimated more than a half-million customers were without power by late Friday night. Some wondered if the storm could top Boston's all-time single-storm snowfall record of 27.6 inches, set in 2003. By 9 pm Friday, according to the National Weather Service, the storm was spinning off the coast of Long Island, NY, and expected to move north-northeastward past New England's coast before its effects tapered off on Saturday afternoon. "Storm total snowfall accumulations of 1 to 2 feet ... with locally higher amounts are possible across much of the Northeast," the National Weather Service said. "The heaviest snow is forecast to fall across parts of eastern Massachusetts ... Connecticut and Rhode Island where snowfall amounts higher than two feet are possible. In addition to the heavy snowfall ... wind gusts as high as 70 mph are possible ... especially near the coasts." By 9 pm Friday, parts of Connecticut and New York had the highest actual snowfall totals listed by the National Weather Service, with 13 inches measured in Ogdensburg ...

Mesmerising Meghalaya in the north east of India with Tailor`d Trips www.tt-s.in
Meghalaya is a state in the north east of India. The name means "The Abode of Clouds" in Sanskrit and other Indo-Iranian languages. As of 2011, the state has a population of 2964007 and is the 23rd most populous in the countrry. About one third of the state is forested. The Meghalaya subtropical forests ecoregion encompasses the state; its mountain forests are distinct from the lowland tropical forests to the north and south. The forests of Meghalaya are notable for their biodiversity of mammals, birds, and plants. It was previously part of Assam, but on January 21, 1972, the districts of Khasi, Garo and Jaintia hills became the new state of Meghalaya. Meghalaya has predominantly an agrarian economy. The important crops are potatoes, rice, maize, pineapples, bananas, etc. The service sector is made up of real estate and insurance companies. The state has become a hub of illegal mining activity. Meghalaya's gross state domestic product for 2004 was estimated at $1.6 billion in current prices. Shillong, the capital of the state, is a popular hill station. There are several falls in and around Shillong. Shillong Peak is highest in the state and is good for trekking. It is also known as the "abode of the gods" and has excellent views. The state offers many good hotels and lodging facilities.

The snowstorm has left one man dead in its wake and taken electricity from over 650000 customers in the Northeast. And it dumped about two feet of snow across New England and Long Island, the National Weather Service said in a bulletin early Saturday. Connecticut saw the most accumulation with over 20 inches in many places, the NWS said, but the nor'easter has beaten up Massachusetts with winds howling at 60 to 75 mph. It knocked out power to over 400000 addresses there, accounting for nearly two thirds of all power outages, according to the state's power companies. Electricity dropped out at a nuclear power plant in Plymouth, Massachusetts, said fire spokesman Ed Bradley, but backup generators sprang into action. It's not an emergency, he said. Plymouth is 90% in the dark.

Garo tribal dancers from North-East India
The Garos are a tribal people in Meghalaya, India and neighboring areas of Bangladesh, who call themselves A·chik Mande which literally means"hill people," from a·chik "hill" and mande" means people", or simply A·chik or Mande. They are the second-largest tribe in Meghalaya after the Khasi and comprise about a third of the local population. The Garos are one of the few remaining matrilineal societies in the world. Garos are mainly Christians although there are some rural pockets where the traditional animist religion and traditions are still followed. The Garos are mainly distributed over the Kamrup, Goalpara and Karbi Anglong districts of Assam, Garo Hills in Meghalaya, and substantial numbers, about 200000 are found in greater Mymensingh (Tangail, Jamalpur, Sherpore, Netrakona) and Gazipur, Rangpur, Sunamgonj, Sylhet, Moulovibazar district of Bangladesh. It is estimated that total Garo population in India and Bangladesh together were about 2 million in 2001. Garos are also found scattered in the state of Tripura. The recorded Garo population was around 6000 in 1971. In a recent survey conducted by the newly revived Tripura Garo Union revealed that the number of Garos have increased to about 15000, spreading to all the four districts of Tripura.
