Breaking footage : China's Brutal Labor Camps, Part 1
This is Masanjia Labor Camp, also referred to as the Ideology Education School of Liaoning Province. Practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice as well as house Christians are held here, often without trial or formal sentencing.
Forced labor is one of the tactics used here to reform what the Communist Party considers improper political or spiritual beliefs. Prisoners at Masanjia often work from 5am to midnight. Sometimes, they're forced to work through the night without sleep. If they are given a chance to rest during the day, it's on the factory floor.
Mealtime means a few scraps of cornbread, and maybe some congee or a tiny portion of vegetables. Then it's back to work.
In this footage, eight Chinese prisoners can be seen straightening electrical components called diodes. Not shown here is some of the other work they're forced to do, including manufacturing Halloween decorations—like skulls and plastic tombstones—for export to the United States. Some prisoners have to handle toxic substances without protective gear, causing itching, throat pain, and lung problems over time.
In this place, not every prisoner is able to survive the conditions.
Mr. Dong Chen was a Christian from Fuxin city in Liaoning Province. Because of his affiliation with an underground church, he was sentenced to two years of re-education through labor. As told by his fellow prisoners, in December of 2007 he became severely ill with high blood pressure, and was sent home to be hospitalized. But after a week, his family could no longer afford medical treatment, so Dong was taken back to Masanjia labor camp and resumed his heavy workload. On the afternoon of May 25, 2008, he vomited and lost consciousness. Prison guards ignored him for several hours, until he died at around 9pm. He was 56. Labor camp officials later told Dong's family that he had died from natural causes.
This is just one of many examples of life and death within China's labor camps. Other such camps are scattered throughout China. Although it's impossible to get an accurate official count of how many prisoners are being held in these camps, human rights groups estimate it's in the tens of thousands or more.

North Korean Labor Camps - VICE NEWS - Part 1 of 7
North Korea has come up with a new way to bring cold hard cash into its isolated country: export North Korean workers to slave away in the Siberian forest (often without telling them they're no longer in North Korea). We set out to investigate these camps and almost landed ourselves in quite a bit of trouble.

"Free China" Documentary Exposes Slave Labor
The documentary "Free China: The Courage to Believe," co-produced by NTD, screened at the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm on Tuesday. The film is about a man and a woman who practice Falun Gong. They are imprisoned and tortured for standing up for their beliefs in China.
The film exposes some of the abuses behind China's economic success—like slave labour—showing the cruel conditions in China's forced labour camps.
The woman in the film, Jennifer Zeng was thrown into a Chinese labour camp because she practices Falun Gong. It's a meditation practice the Chinese regime has been persecuting since 1999. In the labour camp she was forced to make handmade toy bunnies, shoes, Christmas lights and other products that are sold in the West.
[Jennifer Zeng, Main Character in Free China]:
"I hope that international companies must become aware. What kind of business partner and the whole environment inside there is? This is a state sanction system to use innocent people as free slavery that makes profit for the [Chinese Communist] Party. And the international companies and consumers overseas I think unknowingly become part of this. I don't think they want to become part of this."
China has the world's second largest economy and is becoming increasingly more important in the world.
The producer of the film, Kean Wong and Jennifer pointed out that a better economy in China does not automatically grant freedom of speech for the Chinese people.
[Kean Wong, Producer]
"You are dealing with a mafia that is willing to kill their own people. They don't really care about your company. They want to do business with you, make as much money as they can and eventually steal your market share."
Kean Wong says that companies today that are doing business with China can no longer put all the responsibility on politicians to work for human rights in China.
[Kean Wong, Producer]
"If you don't create an environment that is open, that is human, that allows freedom of speech as we are given here in Sweden and around the world, you can not have a proper trading partner."
Several members of the Swedish Parliament, across party lines, support the film.
[Boriana Åberg, Member of Swedish Parliament]:
"While there is one single person who is denied human rights, the rest of us have to fight and stand up for those values of freedom, to say what you think, express yourselves, write without fear of being thrown into prison or in labour camps like Jennifer here."
The award-winning documentary "Free China: The Courage to Believe" is directed by Michael Pearlman. Free China has also been screened at the European Parliament and the at the United States' Congress.
The film team is planning to release "Free China" for threatrical release this summer.

Woman Finds Hidden Letter from Chinese Labor Camp Inside Kamart Product
Oregon native Julie Keith has found herself in the middle of one of China's biggest controversies, the persecution of the Falun Gong meditation practice.
It all started more than a year ago when she purchased a 17-piece graveyard kit at a local Kmart. It was sitting in storage for a year until this past October. She was just about to donate it because it was collecting dust, but decided to use it for her daughter's fifth birthday party, which falls right before Halloween.
[Julie Keith, Portland, Oregon]:
"And as I opened some of the Styrofoam headstones, a note popped out. I opened the note and it was from this person pleading for help in the labor camp in China and wasn't sure what to do with it."
The letter, written at the Masanjia Labor Camp in Shenyang, northeast China, paints a grizzly picture.
"If you occasionally buy this product, please kindly resend this letter to the World Human Right Organization. Thousands people here who are under the persecution of the Chinese Communist Party Government will thank and remember you forever."
The letter claims detainees work 15-hour days and are paid less than $2 USD a month for forced labor. It says thousands are held there, and that many are persecuted Falun Gong practitioners.
And it doesn't end there. It goes on to say , "People who work here, suffer punishment 1-3 years averagely, but without Court Sentence (unlaw punishment). Many of them are Falun Gong practitioners, who are totally innocent people only because they have different believe to CCPG. They often suffer more punishment than others."
[Julie Keith, Damascus, Oregon]:
" The first thing I did was Google the labor camp and it horrified me... some of the stories coming from there. But it really made me happy that I don't live in a country where that kind of thing happens."
China's labor re-education system is notorious for rights abuses. The system is used heavily in the Communist regime's persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. In 2008, the US State Department estimated up to half of the 200,000 registered detainees in Chinese labor camps were Falun Gong adherents.
[Julie Keith, Damascus, Oregon]:
"I was aware there were prison camps and forced labor, but just not anything so horrific."
Julie says she's she spoken to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations, who are now looking into the claims.
Sears Holdings Corporations, which runs Kmart, has also said it is holding its own investigations.

Olympic Losers Sent To Labor Camps In North Korea?
"North Korea's Olympic athletes are thrilling their countrymen with surprising success in winning medals and they are attributing their success to their Dear Leader Kim Jong Un. But others, including former North Korean athletes who have defected, suggest the success of the country's small contingent of athletes at the games may be the result of a policy of training them from a very young age at specialized schools, backed up by rewards like cars and refrigerators for winners and the threat of labor camps for losers...".* Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz, and Ana Kasparian discuss on The Young Turks.

Masanjia Labor Camp Survivor Was Force-Fed Psychiatric Drugs
A woman from Oregon found a cry for help from a Chinese labor camp in a box of Halloween decorations. The letter claims to be written from the Masanjia labor camp in northeastern China.
The Masanjia labor camp is notorious for its harsh work conditions and the mistreatment of those interned inside. In the plea letter that found its way to the US, the writer specifically mentions the mistreatment of Falun Gong practitioners. Falun Gong is a spiritual discipline. Its adherents are brutally persecuted in China.
Pan Qi is a former detainee from Masanjia. She witnessed another Falun Gong practitioner who was forced fed neuroleptic drugs.
[Pan Qi, Former Detainee in Masanjia Labor Camp]:
"Her eyes stared at me without any recognition. I asked her 'What happened to you?' She didn't look at me. It was like she had no soul. She couldn't recognize me. So I pinched her and said 'look at me. Who am I?'"
Shortly after Pan Qi witnessed this, she was force-fed drugs as well.
[Pan Qi, Former Detainee in Masanjia Labor Camp]:
"When I got to the hospital he (a doctor) asked me 'Have you renounced your beliefs?' I said 'Practicing Falun Gong is good, I have no illness.' He said 'If you have not, you are a mental patient.' ... Several people pushed me onto a bed board. One of them had a spoon with medicine in it. I remember it was a blue capsule, and he put black powder in the spoon. Then he held my nose and put the medicine in my mouth when I couldn't hold my breath any longer."
Torture aimed at Falun Gong practitioners is often geared towards forcing them to renounce their beliefs. Pan Qi describes how guards forced her to step on the picture of Li Hongzhi, who introduced Falun Gong to the public in 1992. Many adherents refer to him as "teacher."
[Pan Qi, Former Detainee in Masanjia Labor Camp]:
"They put teacher's picture on the ground. Then they lift me up and put me on the picture. They stepped on my hands, feet, and my body. When I moved any part of my body, they stepped on that part. And then they asked me to renounce my beliefs and hit me with an electric baton."
Since Pan Qi refused, her detention was extended.
She was finally released on medical bail after persistent pleas from her family. By then, she was unresponsive due to torture.
Faluninfo.net, a website documenting the persecution of Falun Gong, estimates over 1,000 practitioners have been tortured in mental hospitals with unknown drugs.

In China's Labor Camp Reform, Huge Expenses Scrutinized
It's still unclear how exactly the Chinese "Reeducation through Labor" system will be reformed. But the nationwide system of labor camps are increasingly under fire for the extensive brutality they are known for, as well as their waste of public funds.
Since official comments by Chinese Communist Party media earlier this week, it appears the regime is planning to introduce changes to the system. Whether cosmetic alterations or significant changes are in store, one thing is clear—getting rid of the system altogether would save Chinese taxpayers a huge amount of money.
The Guangdong Province Reeducation through Labor Bureau recently published its budget for 2012. It was 511 million yuan, or around 82 million US dollars. 90% of that was taxpayers' money.
Online author, Wu Jianguo, said this is theft of the public's hard-earned money. That means, the system is harmful to everyone—not just those detained in labor camps.
[Wu Jianguo, Political Commentator]:
"If just one province like Guangdong needs more than 400 million RMB, then how much is needed for all of China? It will be an astronomical figure. This money is from the public, it's the taxpayer's money."
Labor camps are widely considered unmonitored "legal black holes". Serious, widespread abuse against detainees are frequently reported. Some from suppressed groups are purposefully sent to the labor camp facilities for intensive torture sessions.
Economist Cheng Xiaonong says the Chinese public should demand to monitor any plans to reform the system.
[Cheng Xiaonong, Chinese Economist]:
"I absolutely do not believe that the Party can abolish this system so easily. If anyone thinks the Party will do it, they are a fool. It'll just change to another name. The Party has pulled too many of these kinds of tricks all through its history. It's not the first time."
According to official data, currently there are 350 labor camps in mainland China where 190,000 people are detained. However, some human rights observers have estimated that the total number of detainees in labor camps is actually about one million people.

Fate of China's Labor Camp System Uncertain
Human rights observers have cautiously welcomed recent calls to end or reform China's labor camp system. Even state-run media and official advisors have spoken out against the unpopular form of punishment, often used to silence dissent. This Monday, state-run media cited a legal advisor saying the system could be scrapped this year.
Law Professor Zhang Zanning from China's Southeast University, says it would be a big achievement for China's leadership to stop sending dissidents to labor camps.
[Zhang Zanning, Law Professor, Southeast University]:
"It's a universal right to be able to criticize the government and not end up in a labor camp. But for sixty years, the Chinese Communist Party has not allowed this right. If the new leadership can give its governance back to the people, this right can be protected."
But just what will happen to the labor camp system is uncertain. State media has issued conflicting reports about whether it will be ended or reformed.
In either scenario, the Chinese regime will have to confront citizens who were sent to labor camps illegally.
[Matt Gnaizda, NTD China Analyst]:
"If they start releasing dissidents, some of them are going to speak up, and they're going to talk about all those illegal and terrible things that were done to them in the labor camp, and a lot of officials will have to face some sort of reckoning."
Matt Gnaizda says the Chinese regime will need to take several steps to address the underlying problems of the labor camp system.
[Matt Gnaizda, NTD China Analyst]:
"Meaningful reform means they need to release all those people who were wrongfully detained, then give them proper compensation. And they can't just replace the labor camp system with some other form of detention."
Earlier this month, state-run CCTV unofficially cited Chinese security chief Meng Jianzhu as saying the labor camp system would be ended this year. That report was removed hours later, and replaced with reports saying reforms would be carried out instead.

China 'to reform' controversial labour camps
The Chinese government is reportedly looking to stop using controversial labour camps that critics say violate fundamental human rights. The "re-education through labour" camps system has been used for years to silence political opponents. It allows Chinese authorities to keep citizens locked up for years without charge or trial. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from Hong Kong.

"I escaped a North Korean prison camp" - Shin Dong-hyuk's Survivor Story
Shin Dong-hyuk was born inside Kaechon #14, one of the world's harshest labor camps. His parents were political prisoners, declared enemies of the state for having committed minor offenses against the North Korean regime. Shin was routinely subjected to torture and knew nothing of the outside world until his escape at the age of 23.
Today he is on a mission to tell the world his story. And to remind us of the estimated 200,000 other forced laborers currently languishing under the regime of Kim Jong-un.

Meng Sutie, the secretary of Yunnan Provincial Politics
and Law Committee announced recently that they will stop sending three types of criminals to labor camp,
This will include those charged with endangering state
securities, irrational petitioning and defaming leaders' images.
Other labor camp punishments will stop as well.
Meng Sutie emphasized that those current detainees
will continue to complete their labor reeducation.
In addition, the wrong punishments without
complications will be dealt with case by case.
Chuncheng Evening Paper, the evening edition of
the government operated Yunnan Daily reported the news
"Yunnan Suspends All Punishments to Labor Camp".
It reported that in the political and legal work meeting of
Yunnan province, Meng Sutie, the secretary of Politics and Law Committee said:
"From now on, the labor reeducation punishments for
those accused of endangering state securities,
sentences for those charged with irrational petitioning,
and with defaming leaders' images are suspended."
The report said the decision to "suspend the labor camp
punishment" is a result of the National Politics and Law meeting.
The report also mentioned three typical cases: the
Tang Hui case, Ren Jianyu case and the Peng Hong case.
Li Tianxiao, political commentator, a Ph.D. in political science
of Columbia University said that these three actions are not included in the definition of Labor reeducation law.
This news looks very unreasoned and ridiculous.
Li Tianxiao: "One of the main purposes of listing the three
types of actions is trying to erase the contradictions.
In official statements that are confusing people.
Another point is it's a kind of amendment that
excludes these actions in labor reeducation."
Jin Guanghong, the former lawyer of "Beijing Kaitai Law Firm"
also thought the abolition of the labor reeducation system is an action that the CCP had been forced to take.
This being because of mounting pressure from
inside and outside of China.
Jin Guanghong pointed out that the labor reeducation
system is illegal by both universal values and CCP's laws.
Jin Guanghong: "I think it can't be treated as either
progress in rule of law, nor a success in rule of law.
It's simply a concession because the pressure is too much.
If it really wants to rule by law, then the judicial
system should be independent."
The report stressed that other criminals will be dealt with
by relative law, and labor reeducation will no longer be used.
Li Tianxiao thinks this suspension is an attempt
at sounding out opinion and the reaction.
Li Tianxiao: "(It's the CCP) testing what's the people's opinion
on this issue, and trying to leave a way out for itself.
At the same time, I guess it has an alternative solution.
The definition of suspending is that it can restart at any time.
So, it has found some alternative solutions, for example,
it raised Correction Action on Illegal Acts before."
Meng Jianzhu, the secretary of Politics and Law Committee
announced at the national Politics and Law meeting
on January 7 that he will stop the labor reeducation this year.
However, CCP official media changed the words later and
said it's a reform of the labor reeducation system.
Amnesty International and some scholars have raised
several questions:
"Be careful and aware that the CCP may use another term and
method to continue the labor reeducation system."
A few days ago, the legal profession and academia expressed
different views on the replacement of labor reeducation system by so-called "Correction Action on Illegal Acts".
They analyzed that the purpose of the so-called New Law
isn't positive, which can be further treated as changing the water but not changing the medicine.
The Act hasn't been released until now.
In addition, Meng Sutie stressed especially that the
current detainees will be treated by natural digestion.
In principle, their cases won't change the sentence even
with complications, unless there's an error in execution.
Then the case will be dealt with as an individual one.
Li Tianxiao: "From 1999, CCP's labor reeducation system
was controlled by Jiang Zemin and later Zhou Yongkang
and has the biggest concentrated camps full of
Falun Gong practitioners.
Once launched, a reflection on this system, must face
the issue of how to deal with Falun Gong Practitioners.
Because all of them are innocent but detained. It'll be hard
for the CCP to explain who recommended detention?
What's the reason for the detention?
It's hard for them to explain."
Li Tianxiao pointed out that now the CCP doesn't want to
change the labor reeducation system, but wants to calm people's grievances and their reactions.
It is using this issue as a litmus test to see

C9 - Quest: Rescue the Leader em Forced Labor Camp
