The tournament usually features four teams, each playing two matches, and is held in July at Stadion Brühl in Grenchen. As a friendly tournament, the format tends to be fluid. The Uhrencup has been held annually since 1962 (with the exception of 1967 and 1974).
It typically features Swiss clubs, though occasionally guest teams from another country will play as part of a pre-season tour. However, 2010 was a truly international affair, with only one club – Young Boys Bern – originating from Switzerland. The remaining competitors were Deportivo de La Coruña from Spain, the Dutch side Twente Enschede and the eventual winner VfB Stuttgart from Germany.
For the 2011 tournament Swiss sides Young Boys Bern and FC Basel will be joined by English club West Ham United and German side Hertha Berlin.
