Jencks Award 2012 - Rem Koolhaas lecture
This year's Jencks Award winner Rem Koolhaas has, more than any other architect of his generation, invested in the creation of two parallel lives -- one of theory and one of the practice of architecture. This double venture is marked by his twin studios, OMA and AMO, the Office of Metropolitan Architecture and the Architecture Media Organisation. The separation of these 'Siamese twins' is intended to 'liberate architectural thinking from architectural practice.' In this lecture, Rem Koolhaas charts the evolution of his ideas and built projects. From urban provocations and interventions to award winning schemes around the world, he is today one of architecture's most potent forces. The lecture is chaired by Charles Jencks, designer, author and broadcaster.

REM KOOLHAAS Lecture on OMA's Work
The Areen Architecture Series at the Department of Architecture and Design held a lecture entitled: "On OMA's Work" by Rem Koolhaas. Rem Koolhaas is an internationally acclaimed architect and urbanist. He founded the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in 1975 together with Elia and Zoe Zenghelis and Madelon Vriesendorp. Koolhaas graduated from the Architectural Association in London and in 1978 published Delirious New York, a Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan. In 1995, his book S,M,L,XL summarized the work of OMA and established connections between contemporary society and architecture. At this moment Rem Koolhaas is heading the work of OMA as well as AMO¬the conceptual branch of OMA, a think tank focused on social, economic, and technological issues. Rem Koolhaas is a professor at Harvard University where he conducts the Project on the City, a research program investigating changing urban conditions around the world. The projects include an analysis of the role of retail and consumption in contemporary society (The Harvard Guide to Shopping, 2001), a study on China's Pearl River Delta (published as Great Leap Forward, 2002), and studies on Rome, Lagos, Moscow, and Beijing. OMA has completed the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin (2003), a campus center at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago (2003), the Prada Epicenter in Los Angeles (2004) and the Public Library in Seattle (2004). The Seattle Library was chosen by TIME Magazine as The Best Architecture for ...

Dutch Profiles: Rem Koolhaas OMA
The iconic buildings of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, OMA, and its core principles as embodied by Rem Koolhaas, have gained worldwide attention since it's foundation in 1975. The philosophy and aesthetic developed for competition submissions for and the Centre for Art and Mediatechnology in Karlsruhe, La Villette, the Jussieu campus and the Très Grande Biblioteque in Paris, garnered frenzied international attention and were finally realised in De Kunsthal in Rotterdam. Rem Koolhaas' intensive conceptual thinking about architecture and social circumstances ran simultaneously from the very early stages of his career. With a background in journalism and scriptwriting - his curiosity, research and urge to analyse are basics of his and OMA's working process. It is this approach that makes him a highly debated thinker and architect - although he staunchly refutes the label "Starchitect". This image, he feels, blinds the public to a clear view of what his and OMA's work is really about. Casa da Musica in Porto provides a valuable steppingstone for one of OMA's latest commissioned projects, the Taipei Performing Arts Centre. Treatment of form, innovative techniques, and the celebration of context are key elements of the design. Rather than relocating the roaring Shilin night market from the site of the forthcoming Taipei centre, OMA will instead build its 3 theatres above the market. The vibrant, dynamic culture of the East forms a crucial element in Koolhaas' pre ...

LAGOS : REM KOOLHAAS
With an estimated population of 14 million now, Lagos is one of the fastest growing cities on the African continent. By 2020, it is expected to be the third largest city in the world, with 24 million people. After decades of military rule, and in spite of enormous oil revenue, Nigeria suffers from mass poverty, dysfunctional public services and broken down infrastructures. Consequently, Lagos has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous cities in the world and many Africans prefer to avoid it. Architect Rem Koolhaas, however, chose not to. For the past four years, he, and a team of students of The Harvard Project on the City, have come to Lagos regularly to research the type of urbanity that is produced by uncontrolled, explosive population growth. Fascinated by the energy of Lagos, and driven by the desire to understand modernity in all ist aspects, Koolhaas set out to learn from Lagos, rather than planning, building or changing anything. Notwithstanding its notoriety, Lagos continues to have enormous appeal for vast numbers of people. Every hour, 21 new inhabitants set out to start a life in the city, a life that is highly unpredictable and requires risk taking, networking and improvisation as essential strategies for survival. As talkshow host Funmi Iyanda puts it on her fabulously popular breakfast show The New Dawn: Lagos works for us. There is some kind of function in the dysfunction. And Rem Koolhaas saw that. It's like some elusive perfume in the air. If ...

Rem Koolhaas - Villa Dall'Ava
The villa is situated on a hill which slopes steeply toward the Seine, the Bois de Boulogne, and the city of Paris, in the residential area of Saint Cloud - a neighbourhood characterised by 19th century houses in a classical "Monet" landscape. The client wanted a glass house with a swimming pool on the roof and two separate "apartments" - one for the parents, the other for the daughter. They also wanted a panoramic view - from their swimming pool - of the surrounding landscape and the city of Paris. The site is like a big room, with a boundary made of greenery, garden walls and slopes. It is composed of three parts: a sloping garden, the main volume of the villa, the street level garage with access in a cavity. The house is conceived as a glass pavilion containing living and dining areas, with two hovering, perpendicular apartments shifted in opposite directions to exploit the view. They are joined by the swimming pool which rests on the concrete structure encased by the glass pavilion.
