Portrait in Classical Oil Painting Technique by Alexei Antonov
artpapa.com . Multiple Layers Painting Step by Step Portrait Exercise. A special teaching system which I have developed specifically to enable the student to learn and remember the main technical principles of the Flemish painting traditions in a very short time. Students will practice paintng on step-by-step template with 6 windows reflecting the stages of classical multilayer technique, from imprimatura to the final brush strokes. In the windows showing the previous stages (layers), students will imitate the exact color and shade mixture of the next layer, following the example of the template, without waiting for the paint to dry.

Oil Painting Technique, Two Painting Demos of kitchen art using flemish technique, "onions".
Here are two demonstrations back to back of some kitchen art using a very old technique of oil painting. These "Onions" and "Onions Too" were completed on 9" x 12" canvas. Using a layered approach, each layer performs a specific function for the painting that is finally revealed in the finished work. For a more detailed demonstration, visit the site, click the "whats on my easel" section to see other demonstrations including this one with explanations for each step!

Using the Flemish Painting Technique by The Painted Soul
An experiment using the Flemish painting technique with acrylics. Traditionally this technique is used with oils. But I thought it might be interesting to see how it worked with a different media.

Flemish Technique by Susan Abdella, MDA - Acrylics
Discover the Flemish technique used by the Old Dutch Masters. Paint along and create depth and dimension using the traditional layering method in acrylics. Watch this painting come to life as the artist begins with a tonal underpainting, develops the middle values through the use of the classical dead layer and slowly develops color through subsequent use of opaque and transparent layers of pigments. Strata #4 - Site-Specific Installation
Strata #4 is a multi-channel immersive video-installation commissioned by Palais de Beaux Arts in Lille. The subject of this work is a series of iconic pieces from the museum’s Flemish collection, focusing specifically on Rubens’ and Van Dyck’s grand altarpieces. Strata #4 is the result of a study and exploration of the paintings themselves, delving beneath their figurative appearance and looking at the very rules behind the composition, colour schemes and proportions of each piece. It is a precise process aimed at creating new contemporary images based on universal rules of beauty and perfection. Documenting the improbable collisions between classical figuration and contemporary abstraction, Strata #4 aims to create an harmonious dialogue between worlds that may appear very distant from one another, but in fact share so much in common.
Strata #4 is part of the ongoing Strata Series

Flemish Painting
Early Flemish painting grew out of illuminated Gothic manuscripts. In portraying interiors and furnishings, towns, rivers, trees, and flowers, the Flemish developed a technique of painting on wood panels with oil, creating an enamel-like smoothness and an impression of light reflected deep within. In later Flemish works, the character of Baroque painting was embodied in the dramatic masterpieces of Peter Paul Rubens. Other Flemish artists include van Eyck, Van der Weyden, Memling, and Bruegel the Elder.

Flemish Venetian Masters #BOZAR
Venetian and Flemish Masters Bellini, Tiziano, Canaletto - Van Eyck, Bouts, Jordaens,... Friday 11.02 - Sunday 08.05.2011 Centre for Fine Arts Following their initial collaboration in 2009, which focused on the collection of the House of Savoy, the museums of Flanders and of northern Italy are once again putting their respective schools of painting into perspective with a stunning selection of pictures. From the 15th to the 18th century, the exhibition presents four centuries of contrast between 15 masterpieces from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and some fifty paintings from the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, one of the finest collections of Venetian paintings in existence. Venetian and Flemish Mastersis organised chronologically in four sections, one for each century; within each section, four major themes are highlighted - the portrait, saints in a natural setting, the sacred and the profane, and panoramic views. In thequattrocento Bellini's portraits influenced Van Eyck, while the northern painter exportedhis naturalism. In thecinquecento the Venetians moved beyond the techniques of the Flemish Primitives. Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese created an explosion of colour and brought new light into the landscapes of Patenier. In theseicento, Rubens, in Italy, had an influence on Tiepolo. Thesettecento, finally, saw a proliferation of styles in a Venice in decline, from Canaletto's snapshots to the sarcastic genre paintings of Guardi, which influenced the love of ...

Uncovering the original beauty of a Flemish oil painting - Stage 1
We are conserving a Seventeenth Century Flemish oil painting for our Feast Your Eyes: The Fashion of Food in Art exhibition. The artist is unknown but we believe the painting to have been influenced by Pieter Aertsen. The conserved painting will be on show from 6 October 2012 to 6 January 2013 at The Bowes Museum and then will travel on to Washington Old Hall, in Tyne & Wear.
