Opening Ceremony - London 2012 Paralympic Games
Enlightenment, empowerment, excitement -- the Paralympic Games returned to London on Wednesday night promising to deliver a spectacular reminder of human potential and 11 inspirational days of superb sport. Few who witnessed the most visually stunning Opening Ceremony in the history of the Games were left in any doubt about the power of belief, hope and determination. More than 4200 athletes from 164 nations will carry that message through their sporting achievements during the 2012 Games and beyond. From the moment Professor Stephen Hawking made a rare public appearance to start proceedings, urging the world to "look up at the stars, not down at your feet", it was clear this was a show about the extraordinary. Sir Ian McKellan also starred, saying: "Shine your light on the beautiful diversity of humanity." This Opening Ceremony was a celebration of all that makes us unique, and all that drives us forward. Athletes from around the world laughed, smiled and danced in the centre of the arena while Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II looked on. The procession was a carnival of colour that transformed a dark London night into a vibrant focus of the world's attention. From Brazil's green trousers, through to Mexico's multi-coloured ponchos and the bright pink of Namibia, all eyes were on those who will thrill billions with their endeavors. There was little surprise that the biggest cheer came when hosts Great Britain entered the stadium to a ticker-tape reception, but every ...

Paralympic Sport Clubs are community-based programs developed to involve youth and adults with physical and visual disabilities in sports and physical activity, regardless of skill level. All programs and activities are based in the community and are run by the local organization but partner with US Paralympics, a division of the USOC. London 2012 Paralympics - Sport doesn't care where you're from, if you're a man or a woman, tall, thin, big or short. Sport doesn't care how you got here, how much money you make, what you believe in or not. It doesn't care if you have two legs, one leg or wheels. MEX Mexico LONDON, September 4 Assia EL HANNOUNI (FRA) defended the T12 women's 400m title she won in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 when she covered one lap of the track in 55.39. Terezinha GUILHERMINHA (BRA) had the lead with 150m to go but France's five-time Games gold medallist prior to the gun paced her race to perfection as the popular Brazilian faded down the home straight to finish out of the medals. "I am very pleased with my win, but not my time. There was too much wind in the stadium and I may have done better without it.
