A photographer (from Greek φωτός (photos), meaning "light", and γράφω (graphos), meaning "written") is a person who takes photographs. A professional photographer uses photography to earn money; amateur photographers take photographs for pleasure and to record an event, emotion, place, or person.

A professional photographer may be an employee, for example of a newspaper, or may contract to cover a particular event such as a wedding or graduation, or to illustrate an advertisement. Others, including paparazzi and fine art photographers, are freelancers, first making a picture and then offering it for sale or display. Some workers, such as policemen, estate agents, journalists and scientists, make photographs as part of other work. Photographers who produce moving rather than still pictures are often called cinematographers, videographers or camera operators, depending on the commercial context.

Photographers are also categorized based on the subjects they photograph. Some photographers explore subjects typical of paintings such as landscape, still life, and portraiture. Other photographers specialize in subjects unique to photography, including street photography, documentary photography, fashion photography, wedding photography, war photography, photojournalism, and commercial photography.

Selling photographs[link]

The exclusive right of photographers to copy and use their products is protected by copyright. Countless industries purchase photographs for use in publications and on products. The photographs seen on magazine covers, in television advertising, on greeting cards or calendars, on websites, or on products and packages, have generally been purchased for this use, either directly from the photographer or through an agency that represents the photographer. A photographer uses a contract to sell the "license" or use of his or her photograph with exact controls regarding how often the photograph will be used, in what territory it will be used (for example U.S. or U.K. or other), and exactly for which products. This is usually referred to as usage fee and is used to distinguish from production fees (payment for the actual creation of a photograph or photographs). An additional contract and royalty would apply for each additional use of the photograph.

The time duration of the contract may be for one year or other duration. The photographer usually charges a royalty as well as a one-time fee, depending on the terms of the contract. The contract may be for non-exclusive use of the photograph (meaning the photographer can sell the same photograph for more than one use during the same year) or for exclusive use of the photograph (i.e. only that company may use the photograph during the term). The contract can also stipulate that the photographer is entitled to audit the company for determination of royalty payments. Royalties vary depending on the industry buying the photograph and the use, for example, royalties for a photograph used on a poster or in television advertising may be higher than the royalty for use on a limited run of brochures. A royalty is also often based on the size the photo will be used in a magazine or book and cover photos usually command higher fees than photos used elsewhere in a book or magazine.

Photos taken by a photographer while working on assignment often belong to the company or publication unless stipulated otherwise by contract. Professional portrait and wedding photographers often stipulate by contract that they retain the copyright on wedding photos or portrait photos, so that only they can sell further prints of the photographs to the consumer, rather than the customer reproducing the photos by other means. If the customer wishes to be able to reproduce the photos themselves, they may discuss an alternative contract with the photographer in advance before the pictures are taken, in which a larger up front fee may be paid in exchange for reprint rights passing to the customer.

There are major companies who have maintained catalogues of stock photography and images for decades, such as Getty Images and others. Since the turn of the 21st century many online stock photography catalogues have appeared that invite photographers to sell their photos online easily and quickly, but often for very little money, without a royalty, and without control over the use of the photo, the market it will be used in, the products it will be used on, time duration, etc.

Many people upload their photographs to social networking websites and other websites, in order to share them with a particular group or with the general public. Those interested in legal precision may explicitly release them to the public domain or under a free content license. Some sites, including Wikimedia Commons, are punctilious about licenses and only accept pictures with clear information about permitted use.

Vincent Laforet (born 1975, Switzerland) is a French American director and photographer. Laforet shared the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography with two other photographers as a member of The New York Times staff's coverage of the post 9/11 events overseas that captured "the pain and the perseverance of people enduring protracted conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan."^[1] In 2006, Laforet became the Times' s first national contract photographer.^[2] He has been sent on assignment by Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, and Life. He is represented by the Stockland Martel agency.

In 2002, PDN named Vincent Laforêt as one of the “30 photographers under 30 to watch″. In 2005, American Photo Magazine recognized Laforêt as one of the “100 Most Influential People in Photography.” He and four other photographers were awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography for their post-9/11 coverage overseas in 2002. His work has been recognized in the Communication Arts Annual, PDN Annual, The SPD Magazine Cover of the Year (Society of Publication Designers), The World Press Photo Awards, The Pictures of the Year Competition, The Overseas Press Club, The National Headliners Awards, The Pro-Football Hall of Fame. Vincent is a Canon Explorer of Light and Canon Printmaster and serves as consultant to companies such as Apple, Adobe, Carl Zeiss, Leica, Canon, Bogen, Lexar, and X-Rite. He and his work have been profiled on CNN and Good Morning America.

In 2008 Laforet directed "Reverie", the first widely available short film shot with the Canon 5d mark II camera. The video has been cited by proposers of the use of DSLR cameras in digital cinematography^[3] and has been heralded as one of the films that launched the HDSLR movement.

In 2010 he launched a nationwide film competition "Beyond The Still" and he directed the final chapter the film which was screened at the Sundance Film Festival. He is a DGA Director (Director's Guild of America) and of the ICG (International Cinematographers' Guild - Local 600.) He has directed a number of short films and numerous commercials.

In 2011, he was chosen by Canon. to be one of the first 4 filmmakers to shoot with their first cinema camera, the Canon C300, and he directed the film "Mobius" which premiered at Paramount Studios. The opening was attended by Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Robert Rodriguez, and JJ Abrams.

In 2011 his first book VISUALS STORIES (see below for link) was released by Peachpit and describes his thought process and approach to a variety of assignments throughout his photography career.

Laforet has been awarded 3 of the prestigious Cannes Lions (Platinum, Gold, Silver) for his commercial directing work.

Laforet attended the Dalton School and received his B.S. from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in 1997. He is fluent in French and speaks Russian and Spanish. He lives in Manhattan Beach, California^[2]

Laforet was an adjunct professor at the Columbia Journalism's Graduate School of Journalism, The International Center of Photography and the Poynter Institute. He was inducted in Northwestern's Alumni Hall of Fame in 2010.

Laforet is one of the speakers at the Vimeo Festival+Awards 2012.^[4]

Tamara Lackey is a professional photographer, author, workshop teacher^[1] and international speaker. Her work has been published in numerous lifestyle magazines including Vogue, O – The Oprah Magazine, Town & Country, Parenting Magazine, Food & Wine, The Knot Men's Journal,; in trade outlets such as Professional Photographer, Professional ImageMaker and Rangefinder; and on national television programs including NBC’s The Martha Stewart Show and ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.^[2]

In 2008, Lackey released her educational book The Art of Children’s Portrait Photography, which got favorable reviews,^[3][4] and praise from a writer at shootsmarter.com^[5] and aspiring photographers.

Lackey then teamed with Rex Ballard to produce Inside Contemporary Children's Photography, a 90-minute video released in January 2010.^[6]

In 2010 Lackey also worked with Kubota Image Tools to develop a "Kubota Artist Series Style Book & DVD Tutorial", The Tamara Lackey Style Book, to instruct viewers on improving their own portrait and children’s photography using "Kubota Actions" (proprietary Photoshop plugins).^[7]

Lackey once again paired with Rex Ballard to develop a guide to help “everyday photographers” capture more from their life moments. Tamara Lackey's Capturing Life Through (Better) Photography teaches simple tips and tricks to transform point-and-shoot images into little works of art.^[8] It includes a 100-page book and 90-minute full-feature DVD sold individually or as a bundle with included quick reference guide.

Lackey has also presented internationally ^[9] at industry workshops and events, which include serving as a keynote speaker at the National Association of Professional Child Photographers’ Retreat^[10] and participating as a panel judge for the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) International Print Competition.^{[citation needed]}

Robert Lance Mountain (born June 13, 1964) was one of the more popular skateboarders throughout much of the 1980s, and one of the five most legendary members of the Bones Brigade, as featured in the 1987 classic The Search For Animal Chin (Bones Brigade Video Three).

Mountain was born in Pasadena, California. When contests were the main judge of status in the skateboarding world, Mountain was a top competitor during street skating's first phase, but he specialized at riding vert (on ramps and in pools), where he also regularly placed in the top five. Mountain was first sponsored by Variflex in 1981 before joining Powell Peralta a year later, where he formed a strong friendship with Stacy Peralta, the team leader and director of the Bones Brigade video series.

Mountain gained further eminence when he won the Upland Turkey Shoot at Upland Skatepark in 1983, against tough competition from fellow team riders Steve Caballero, Mike McGill and Tony Hawk. This was followed by Mountain acting as the backdrop of skateboarding's first, full length company video, The Bones Brigade Video Show, from 1984. In it, Mountain serves as the segue for all the vert and freestyle parts as he skateboards around Los Angeles, showcasing street skating in its infancy as a legitimate discipline.

In the early 90's, the skateboard industry went through a major shift as street skating overtook vertical skateboarding as the dominant discipline, and the popularity of the Bones Brigade faltered as the next wave of skaters made a name for themselves. He left Powell Peralta and started his own skateboard company, "The Firm" in 1991 with notable skateboarders including Bob Burnquist, Ray Barbee, and Rodrigo Teixeira. On March 13, 2006, Lance Mountain announced the end of The Firm.^[1] He is now riding for Flip Skateboards, in addition to Independent Trucks, and Stüssy clothing. On May 7, 2007, Nike SB announced the addition of Mountain to their team.^[2]

He is also one of the pros featured in Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, which also marks his first appearance in the Tony Hawk series.

Mountain is often cited as one of the inventors of the fingerboards, back in the late 70's, fashioning out of cardboard, pencil erasers, and a disassembled Hot Wheels toy. It was featured in an article in Transworld Skateboarding Magazine as well as in the Powell Peralta video, Future Primitive. It was created as a fun do-it-yourself project, using kitchen sinks to emulate pool riding. It has since evolved into a major toy category selling multiple millions of units, most prominently under the Tech Deck brand. He was the co-designer of the Independent Stage V truck, along with Steve Caballero.^[3] He is also the co-inventor of the Gay Twist, along with Neil Blender.^[4]

He was a stunt camera man in the film Lords of Dogtown.^{[citation needed]}

Mountain is a Christian.^[5] He is married to Yvette Loveless and has one son, Lance Ronald Cyril Mountain.^[6]
