Vice Admiral Sir George Carteret, 1st Baronet (c. 1610 – 18 January 1680 N.S.), son of Elias de Carteret, was a royalist statesman in Jersey and England, who served in the Clarendon Ministry as Treasurer of the Navy. He was also one of the original Lords Proprietor of the Carolina colony and New Jersey. Carteret, a town in New Jersey and Carteret County in North Carolina are named after him.

Early life[link]

Carteret was the son of Elias de Carteret and Elizabeth Dumaresq of Jersey, who both died in 1640^[1] (George dropped the "de" from his surname Carteret when he entered the English navy, concerned that it sounded too French). In the Chapel of Mont Orgueil Castle, May 1640, George married his cousin Elizabeth de Carteret, daughter of Philippe de Carteret II, 3rd Seigneur de Sark. Their eldest son was Philippe. He was 'bred for the sea' and served as an officer in various naval ships in the 1630s and commanded HMS Mary Rose before becoming Comptroller of the Navy in 1641.^[2]

Civil War and Commonwealth[link]

On the commencement of the Civil War he retired from the navy, and withdrew with his family to Jersey, but subsequently returned to aid the projects of the royalists. He afterwards, on the ruin of the royal cause, afforded an asylum to the Prince of Wales (Charles Stuart) and other refugees of distinction within his government of Jersey where he served as Bailiff (1643–1651),^[2] and defended the island against the Parliamentarians, Elizabeth Castle being the last fortress that lowered the royal banner.

George Carteret also had Charles II proclaimed King in Saint Helier on 17 February 1649, after the execution of his father, Charles I. Charles II never forgot this gesture whereby Jersey became the first of his realms to recognise his claim to the throne. However, he had to surrender Jersey to the Commonwealth on 12 December 1651.^[2] He then went into exile in France, where he was imprisoned in 1657 and then exiled from there, after which he went to Venice.

Restoration[link]

At the Restoration, having shared Charles's banishment, Sir George formed one of the immediate train of the restored monarch on his triumphant entry into London. The next day Carteret was sworn into the Privy Council, appointed Vice-Chamberlain of the Household, and constituted Treasurer of the Navy.^[2] His career for the next decade is documented in the diary of Samuel Pepys who joined him as Clerk of the Acts to the Navy Board in 1660. In 1667, he exchanged his office as Vice-Chamberlain with Lord Anglesey for that of Vice-Treasurer of Ireland, an office which he sold in 1669 for £11,000.^[2] His influence seems to have been at its height in 1665, when he boasted to Pepys that the King did nothing without his knowledge; however as the naval war dragged on the Treasurer of the Navy was an obvious target and Pepys noted that by the spring of 1666 Carteret was being attacked on all sides. By the autumn of 1667 he confessed to Pepys that he was longing for the quiet of retirement.

American colonies[link]

The fidelity with which Carteret, like John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton, had clung to the royal cause, gave him also great influence at court. He had, at an early date, taken a warm interest in the colonization of America. In recognition of all the help given to him during his exile in Jersey in the 1640s, Charles II gave Carteret a large grant of land previously named New Netherlands, which he promptly renamed New Jersey. With Berkeley, he became one of the proprietors of the Province of Carolina prior to their becoming jointly interested in East Jersey. Carteret County, North Carolina and town of Carteret, New Jersey are named after him,^[2] and the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey is named after his wife.^[3]

In 1665, Carteret was one of the drafters of the Concession and Agreement, a document that provided freedom of religion in the colony of New Jersey. It was issued as a proclamation for the structure of the government for the colony written by the two proprietors, Berkeley and Carteret.

Later life[link]

In 1669, he faced expulsion from the House of Commons to which he had been elected in 1661 to represent Portsmouth, for misconduct as Vice Chamberlain, being accused of embezzlement.^[4] After an announcement from the king expressing his satisfaction with Carteret and an acquittal by the House of Lords, the inquiry against him lapsed.^[5] In 1673, he was appointed one of the Lords of the Admiralty, and continued in the public service until his death on 14 January 1680.

Shortly before Carteret's death, the king proposed to give him the title Baron Carteret, but Carteret died too soon, so the honour was granted to his grandson George.

Anna Carteret (born 11 December 1942) is a British stage and screen actress, born in Bangalore, India the daughter of Peter John Wilkinson and his wife Patricia Carteret (Strahan). She is married to the television and film director Christopher Morahan and has often worked with him. They have two daughters, theatre director Rebecca and actress Hattie Morahan.^[1]

She was educated at Arts Educational Schools in Tring, Hertfordshire, where she trained for the stage.

Anna Carteret is best known for her role as police inspector Kate Longton in the BBC's long-running 1980s television series Juliet Bravo.

Other TV credits include: The Saint; The Pallisers BBC 1975; Frederic Raphael's The Glittering Prizes BBC 1976, as Barbara Ransome; Send in the Girls; Star Maidens; Peak Practice as Dr Yvonne Marshall; Holby City (2007) as Carol Lloyd, mother of doctor Diane Lloyd; and Holby City's sister series Casualty (2010) in a one-off appearance as patient Joany Slavin.

Films, since 1959, include Dateline Diamonds (as Gay Jenkins, 1965) and The Plank (1967).

She played Vivanti in Cats and Monkeys, co-starring with Jack Shepherd in a radio version of Catherine Shepherd's stage play, for BBC Radio 4's The Afternoon Play last broadcast on 19 November 2007.

Anna Carteret made her first appearance as a Cloud and a Jumping Bean in the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk at the Palace Theatre, Watford in December 1957. Her London debut was at the Scala Theatre playing Wendy in Peter Pan at Christmas 1960.

She worked in repertory in 1962 and 1963, including Windsor and Lincoln, and then at the Bristol Old Vic from 1964–1966, where her roles included:

Janet McTeer, OBE (born 5 August 1961)^{Dubious: Discuss[1][2][3][4]} is an English actress.

Early life[link]

McTeer was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, the daughter of Jean (née Morris) and Alan McTeer, and spent her childhood in York.^[5] She attended the now defunct Queen Anne Grammar School for Girls, and worked at the Old Starre Inn, at York Minster and at the Theatre Royal.^[6] She then trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, beginning a successful theatrical career with the Royal Exchange Theatre after graduating.^[3]

Career[link]

McTeer's television work includes the BBC production of Nigel Nicolson's book Portrait of a Marriage in which she played Vita Sackville-West and the popular ITV series The Governor written by Lynda La Plante. She made her screen debut in Half Moon Street, a 1986 film based on a novel by Paul Theroux. In 1991, she appeared in Catherine Cookson's The Black Velvet Gown, with Bob Peck and Geraldine Somerville; this won the International Emmy award for best drama. She appeared in the 1992 film version of Wuthering Heights (co-starring Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes) and the 1995 film Carrington (which starred Emma Thompson and Jonathan Pryce).

In 1996, McTeer garnered critical acclaim - and both the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award and Critics' Circle Theatre Award for her performance as Nora in a West End production of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House.^[3] The following year, the production transferred to Broadway, and McTeer received a Tony Award, Theatre World Award, and Drama Desk Award as Best Actress in a Play.^[7]

During the show's run, McTeer was interviewed by Charlie Rose on his PBS talk show, where she was seen by American filmmaker Gavin O'Connor, who, at the time, was working on a screenplay about a single mother's cross-country wanderings with her pre-teen daughter. He was determined that she star in the film. When prospective backers balked at her relative anonymity in the States, he produced the movie himself. Tumbleweeds proved to be a 1999 Sundance Film Festival favourite, and McTeer's performance won her a Golden Globe as Best Actress and Academy Award and Screen Actors Guild nominations in the same category.^[8]

McTeer's screen credits include Songcatcher (with Aidan Quinn), Waking the Dead (with Billy Crudup and Jennifer Connelly), the dogme film The King is Alive (with Jennifer Jason Leigh), The Intended (with (Brenda Fricker and Olympia Dukakis), and Tideland, written and directed by Terry Gilliam. She also starred in the dramatisation of Mary Webb's Precious Bane.^[9] She has appeared in such British television serials as The Amazing Mrs Pritchard, Hunter,^[3] and Agatha Christie's Marple (episode: "The Murder at the Vicarage").^[9]

McTeer played Mary, Queen of Scots in Mary Stuart, a play by Friedrich Schiller in a new version by Peter Oswald, directed by Phyllida Lloyd. She acted opposite Harriet Walter as Queen Elizabeth I in London's West End in 2005, a role she reprised in the 2009 Broadway transfer of the production.^[10] McTeer received a Tony Award nomination for her role in Mary Stuart, and won the Drama Desk Award, Outstanding Actress in a Play.

2008 - present[link]

In 2008, she starred in God of Carnage in the West End alongside Tamsin Greig, Ken Stott and Ralph Fiennes, at the Gielgud Theatre.^[11] She reprised her role on Broadway opposite Jeff Daniels from March to June 2010.^[12]

In 2009, she portrayed Clementine Churchill in the HBO feature, Into the Storm, about Sir Winston Churchill's years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World War II.^[13]

In 2011, McTeer starred alongside Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs, and with Daniel Radcliffe and Ciarán Hinds in The Woman in Black, based on the 1983 novel of the same name. Her role as Hubert Page in Albert Nobbs won McTeer critical acclaim and numerous award nominations, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.^[14] It was announced in November 2011 that McTeer had joined the cast of Damages for its fifth and final season (reuniting her with her Albert Nobbs co-star Glenn Close), playing Kate Franklin.^[15] She is set to play American novelist Mary McCarthy in Margarethe von Trotta's upcoming feature, Hannah Arendt.^[16]

McTeer was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours.^[17]
