This obscure poem appears in a footnote in Thomas Percy's Reliques of Ancient Poetry (1767), a collection of popular songs and ballads from the past.
Thule - The ancient Greek and Latin name (first found in Polybius's account of the voyage of Pytheas) for a land six days' sail north of Britain, which he supposed to be the most northerly region in the world.
Hecla - a volcanic mountain in Iceland.
Triancrian - Sicilian (the phrase appears in Virgil several translations, including a slightly bizarre one by Stanyhurst in the 16th century, which Weelkes might have read).
Fogo - one of the islands of the Cape Verde, off the Western coast of Africa. It was a Portugese colony in the early 17th century (Fogo in Portugese means 'Fire'). The entire island is a volcano.

COSMOGRAPHY: THE WRITING OF THE UNIVERSE
...traces the evolution of a series of interrelated ideas which Gilah Yelin Hirsch has studied over a period of twenty-five years. Lengthy sojourns in the wilderness, augmented by world travels, have expanded her vision and the pool of information contributing to a theory on the origin of the alphabet as based in pattern in nature. Hirsch's multidisciplinary approach spans the realms of art, philosophy, psychology, theology, psychoneuroimmunology, spirituality and global culture.
COSMOGRAPHY explores the relationship of form to emotion -- how images are stimulated and how they affect the physiology of the viewer: the nature of perception and cognition -- how the human mind makes sense of what it perceives and why; how all alphabets may have stemmed from five patterns in nature which mirror the neurons and neural processes of the perceptual apparatus; and how indigenous cultures utilize these forms in healing techniques because of their power to catalyze a sense of physical and emotional harmony.
Through the vehicles of painting, photography and innovative experimental video effects, the discovery process is brought to life so that the viewer participates experientially in the creative journey of the artist.
The unusual visual qualities of COSMOGRAPHY were developed in collaboration with editor Eric Marin. In addition to his editing of documentary and feature films, he has also directed and edited his own prize-winning documentaries, including Lou Harrison: Cherish, Conserve, Consider, Create.

Interpretation:
Iceland (it means Iceland here, since Hecla (Hekla) is mentioned, although Thule does now refer to other distant places),
the period (ie full stop) of mapmaking (ie the end of the known world)
boasts of its volcano Hecla, whose sulphurous fire melts the ice and thaws the sky
Etna's flames on Sicily are no higher than this (this is poetic licence, Etna is actually higher than Hecla!)
These things are amazing but not as amazing as me
because I can be both cold and hot, with fear and with love
The second verse is fairly self explanatory, although there is debate as to whether Fogo (= "fire" in Portuguese)
refers to the volcano in Cape Verde (off Senegal) or to Tierra del Fuego. I would vote for Cape Verde since the harmony,
when referring to Fogo, is probably one of the most chromatic pieces of writing in the madrigal repertoire
and is a marvellous depiction of the lava flowing down a volcano.

Cosmography is the science that maps the general features of the cosmos or universe, describing both heaven and Earth (but without encroaching on geography or astronomy). The 14th century work 'Aja'ib al-makhluqat wa-ghara'ib al-mawjudat by Persian physician Zakariya al-Qazwini is considered to be an early work of cosmography.
Traditional Hindu, Buddhist and Jain cosmography schematize a universe centered on Mount Meru surrounded by rivers, continents and seas. These cosmographies posit a universe being repeatedly created and destroyed over time cycles of immense lengths.
In 1551, Martín Cortés de Albacar, from Zaragoza, Spain, published Breve compendio de la esfera y del arte de navegar. Translated into English and reprinted several times,the work was of great influence in Britain for many years. He proposed spherical charts and mentioned magnetic deviation and the existence of magnetic poles.
Peter Heylyn's 1652 book "Cosmographie" (enlarged from his "Microcosmos" of 1621) was one of the earliest attempts to describe the entire world in English, and being the first known description of Australia and among the first of California. The book has 4 sections, examining the geography, politics, and cultures of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, with an addendum on Terra Incognita, including Australia, and extending to Utopia, Fairyland[disambiguation needed 
], and the "Land of Chivalrie".

This obscure poem appears in a footnote in Thomas Percy's Reliques of Ancient Poetry (1767), a collection of popular songs and ballads from the past.
Thule - The ancient Greek and Latin name (first found in Polybius's account of the voyage of Pytheas) for a land six days' sail north of Britain, which he supposed to be the most northerly region in the world.
Hecla - a volcanic mountain in Iceland.
Triancrian - Sicilian (the phrase appears in Virgil several translations, including a slightly bizarre one by Stanyhurst in the 16th century, which Weelkes might have read).
Fogo - one of the islands of the Cape Verde, off the Western coast of Africa. It was a Portugese colony in the early 17th century (Fogo in Portugese means 'Fire'). The entire island is a volcano.

...traces the evolution of a series of interrelated ideas which Gilah Yelin Hirsch has studied over a period of twenty-five years. Lengthy sojourns in the wilderness, augmented by world travels, have expanded her vision and the pool of information contributing to a theory on the origin of the alphabet as based in pattern in nature. Hirsch's multidisciplinary approach spans the realms of art, philosophy, psychology, theology, psychoneuroimmunology, spirituality and global culture.
COSMOGRAPHY explores the relationship of form to emotion -- how images are stimulated and how they affect the physiology of the viewer: the nature of perception and cognition -- how the human mind makes sense of what it perceives and why; how all alphabets may have stemmed from five patterns in nature which mirror the neurons and neural processes of the perceptual apparatus; and how indigenous cultures utilize these forms in healing techniques because of their power to catalyze a sense of physical and emotional harmony.
Through the vehicles of painting, photography and innovative experimental video effects, the discovery process is brought to life so that the viewer participates experientially in the creative journey of the artist.
The unusual visual qualities of COSMOGRAPHY were developed in collaboration with editor Eric Marin. In addition to his editing of documentary and feature films, he has also directed and edited his own prize-winning documentaries, including Lou Harrison: Cherish, Conserve, Consider, Create.

Interpretation:
Iceland (it means Iceland here, since Hecla (Hekla) is mentioned, although Thule does now refer to other distant places),
the period (ie full stop) of mapmaking (ie the end of the known world)
boasts of its volcano Hecla, whose sulphurous fire melts the ice and thaws the sky
Etna's flames on Sicily are no higher than this (this is poetic licence, Etna is actually higher than Hecla!)
These things are amazing but not as amazing as me
because I can be both cold and hot, with fear and with love
The second verse is fairly self explanatory, although there is debate as to whether Fogo (= "fire" in Portuguese)
refers to the volcano in Cape Verde (off Senegal) or to Tierra del Fuego. I would vote for Cape Verde since the harmony,
when referring to Fogo, is probably one of the most chromatic pieces of writing in the madrigal repertoire
and is a marvellous depiction of the lava flowing down a volcano.

With an ear for a pun and an eye for cartographic history, the British Library once entitled an exhibition about maps “Lie of the Land”. Or, as the historian Jerry Brotton more generously puts it ... zilch; nada; nix; diddly-squat ... Not much change there, then ... True to the faith-based cosmography of its time, the late 13th-century Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral has Jerusalem at its heart; what Brotton calls “a giant theological cog” ... ....
