A Tibetan man in the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu set himself on fire today (February 13), in protest of communist oppression of Tibetans. According to the International Campaign for Tibet, this marks 100 Tibetans to self-immolate since 2009. The identity of the protester is unknown but his message was clear. Witnesses say he chanted anti-China slogans as he set himself on fire. The man was rushed to the hospital, and according to Free Tibet, is in critical condition. This is not the first time a Tibetan has self-immolated outside of China. Last March, a 26-year-old man set himself on fire in New Delhi while Chinese leader Hu Jintao was visiting India. This latest self-immolation protest comes as Tibetans marked the Tibetan Lunar New Year, which was on February 11th. The Tibetan government in exile has asked Tibetans not to celebrate the occasion, in solidarity with those being suppressed inside China. Some Tibetan groups are also marking another occasion. February 13th is the 100th anniversary since the 13th Dalai Lama declared Tibet's independence from China's Qing Dynasty rulers. edition.cnn.com Pope Benedict makes first appearance since resignation news Huge crowds in the Vatican cheered Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday as he made his first public appearance since announcing his resignation at the end of the month. He thanked the Roman Catholic faithful in several languages and said it was not appropriate for him to continue as pope. "I've decided to resign the ministry given to me by the Lord. I've done this in full freedom, for the benefit of the Church," he told those gathered in a Vatican City audience hall for his regular weekly appearance. Benedict said he was fully aware of the gravity of his decision but that he could not carry on as pope "if I don't have the strength that it requires."

The test was carried out as part of practical measures of counteraction to defend the country's security and sovereignty in the face of the ferocious hostile acts of the US, which wantonly violated the DPRK's legitimate right to launch satellite for peaceful purposes. The test was conducted in a safe and perfect way on a high level with the use of a smaller and light A-bomb unlike the previous ones, yet with great explosive power. It was confirmed that the test did not give any adverse effect to the surrounding ecological environment. The specific features of the function and explosive power of the A-bomb and all other measurements fully tallied with the values of the design, physically demonstrating the good performance of the DPRK's nuclear deterrence that has become diversified. The nuclear test will greatly encourage the army and people of the DPRK in their efforts to build a thriving nation with the same spirit and mettle as displayed in conquering space, and offer an important occasion in ensuring peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and the region."
