The Harvard-educated economist has been held in a military prison since his arrest on Feb. 18 in the midst of an opposition rally against leftist President Nicolas Maduro, who has faced near-daily demonstrations since early February. At least 39 people have died in clashes between security forces and protesters angered by soaring crime, high inflation and shortages of essential goods. Attorney-general Luis Ortega Diaz told a press conference that formal charges were brought against Mr. Lopez, leader of the Popular Will party, accusing him of inciting violence, arson, damage to property and conspiracy. The government had until Saturday -- 45 days from Mr. Lopez's arrest -- to bring the charges or release him. The government action stems from Mr. Lopez's public support for the student-led street protests that have rocked the country since they began Feb. 4 in the western city of San Cristobal and spread to several other major cities, including the capital Caracas. Mr. Lopez and some other opposition leaders are advocates of a strategy dubbed "the exit," aimed at pressuring Mr. Maduro -- the hand-picked successor to late socialist icon Hugo Chavez -- to resign. Hours after the attorney-general's announcement, about 3,000 demonstrators, most of them students, hit the streets in the east of Caracas demanding Mr. Lopez be freed. Under the slogan "Free Leopoldo," some were dressed in white, a symbol of peace, while others carried the flag of Venezuela. One young man, who wore a homemade gas mask in anticipation of security forces firing tear gas to disperse the rally, said: "We have no weapons, just stones." Ernesto Palacios, a Popular Will activist, told AFP: "As a sign of respect, the government should release Leopoldo Lopez and political prisoners. Venezuelan Government Executing Protesters without Trial
Venezuelan Government Executing Protesters without Trial
Government forces in Venezuela are randomly shooting people from motorcycles, and breaking down doors of apartment buildings. Whenever they find a person thought to be a protester, they kill them without trial. Protests and unrest in the nation have turned into widespread murder and mayhem. Some luckier citizens are merely being arrested for even a suspicion of protest. Security forces in the South American country are launching tear gas canisters into apartment buildings to drive residents from their homes. Last week, opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez surrendered to authorities. He is charged with inciting violence and opposition to the government. His detention brought even more people out on the streets. Lopez is currently being held at the Ramo Verde prison complex in Caracas. Gauber Venot, a 29-year-old protestor, said "This all started with the arrest of Leopoldo Lopez. It's important we have foreign media here. Our media is censored; we learn about our own country from outside sources." Unrest in the country of 29 million people has been growing since 1989. The cities of Caracas, Merida, Valencia and San Cristobal now resemble war zones. Unlike most wars, however, most of the killing in Venezuela is being carried out by just one side in the conflict. National police forces have joined forces with National Guard troops and government-backed militias to carry out the massacre. As the slaughter of innocent civilians continue, internet service is being shut down in cities, as fires rage through homes and businesses. President Maduro appeared on live television, stating "I can give you guarantees that what those [militias] are doing is working, producing." Maduro won a 2013 election to suceed Hugo Chavez as leader of his country. While news media around the world focus on events in the Ukraine, the slaughter of human beings in Venezuela is going largely unreported. http://caracaschronicles.com/2014/02/20/the-game-changed http://caracaschronicles.com/2014/02/19/19f http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/21/world/americas/protests-swell-in-venezuela-as-places-to-rally- disappear.html?_r=0 http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/20/world/americas/venezuela-qa http://www.aljazeera.com/news/americas/2014/02/violent-protests-escalate-venezuela- 201422020613529913.html Download your free Next News "Heroes & Villains" Poster here: http://nextnewsnetwork.com/the-2013-heroes-villains-posters Donate USD: http://nnn.is/donate-dollars Donate BTC: http://nnn.is/donate-bitcoin LIVE: http://NextNewsNetwork.com Facebook: http://Facebook.com/NextNewsNet Twitter: http://Twitter.com/NextNewsNet Sub: http://NNN.is/the_new_media Meet the Next News Team: http://youtu.be/2QnNKwQ2WkY Hashtag: #N3 About: Next News Network's WHDT World News program airs daily at 6pm and 11pm Eastern on Comcast, DirecTV and Over-the-Air and Online at http://NNN.is/on-WHDT WHDT World News is available to 6 million viewers from South Beach to Sebastian, Florida and to 2 million viewers in Boston, Massachusetts via WHDN. Venezuela protests continue despite holiday Americas Al Jazeera English
Venezuela protests continue despite holiday Americas Al Jazeera English Anti-government protesters have hit the streets of Venezuela's capital and other cities, protesting over food shortages and rising inflation, as well as against the government's crackdown on demonstrators. Thursday's protests in Caracas saw fewer numbers, as revellers prepared for carnival celebrations. Between 2,000 and 3,000 people gathered in the wealthy Caracas neighbourhood of Chacao, an opposition stronghold, under the theme "No more dead". Clashes broke out when about 200 demonstrators tried to block a nearby highway and security forces dispersed them using tear gas. Burning barricades Reporting from Venezuela, Al Jazeera's Chris Arsenault said that South America's largest oil exporter began a week-long holiday amid ongoing protests, road blockades and efforts by the government to promote a "peace conference". Barricades erected by opponents of the Socialist government are proving particularly disruptive in cities outside the capital, including San Cristobal near the Colombian border, and the industrial city of Valencia. In the northern section of Valencia - Venezuela's third largest city - young opposition activists burned cars and used them as barricades, while southern areas where government support runs high remained mostly quiet.- published: 28 Feb 2014

Albany named one of the most unfriendly cities in the world
Albany named one of the most unfriendly cities in the world
ALBANY -- Whether it be a simple wave or a friendly smile, it appears that according to one magazine, New York's capital city is lacking it. Albany has been ranked the 13th most unfriendly city, not in the country.....but in the entire world. A bold statement, the Visitors Center thinks is too much. It is kind of shocking that albany would be considered unfriendly because the people here, everyone, i'm actually not originally from albany myself, but i've found everyone here to be very friendly, Lisa Jiardini with the Albany Visitors Center tells us. Conde Nast Traveler asked readers to rate cities based on several factors, including friendlinessand the ones with the lowest scores, by default, end up with the title 'unfriendliest.' Readers had some harsh words for the city of Albany. One reader called the city dull, another saying quote it was best to avoid especially in the winter. We do have some people come in that do say 'where is everybody Jiardini says. The magazine also refered to the city as more of a through city than a travel destination. While that may not always be true, it was for Ed Frankle and his wife. I think it's very nice i grew up near Kingston but i moved away 45 years ago and this is the first time I've been back we're just going through we're on our way home from a trip to Canada. In the short time he's spent in the capital city, he say it doesn't deserve that negative ranking. We've only been here a little while but everyone we've met was pretty friendly. To say this ranking is bad publicity for the city would be an understatement, but the Visitor Center says there's a bright horizon ahead for the city, and that should overshadow everything. There's talk about an aquarium and convention center and there are businesses more and more businesses coming to downtown Albany, so I think if people pay attention to that publicity then there shouldn't really be a problem. Here is the full list of cities, as seen on the website: FRIENDLIEST: 1. Florinaopolis, Brazil 2. Hobart, Tasmania 3. Thimpu, Bhutan 4. Queenstown, New Zealand 5. Charleston, SC 6.
