The film chronicles the struggle between the Nazi and Soviet regimes, from a Ukrainian perspective. Carpath Ruthenia,Rusyn state/three days of independence.
Carpatho-Ukraine was an autonomous region within Czechoslovakia from late 1938 to March 15, 1939. It declared itself an independent Ukrainian republic on March 15, 1939, but was occupied by Hungary between March 15 and March 18, 1939, remaining under Hungarian control until the Nazi Occupation of Hungary in 1944.Soon after the implementation of the Munich Agreement of 29 September 1938 (by which Czechoslovakia lost much of its border region to Nazi Germany) Carpathian Ruthenia and Slovakia declared their autonomy within Czechoslovakia, which Prague accepted. The autonomous Carpathian Ruthenia (officially known as Subcarpathian Ruthenia until then) changed its name to "Carpatho-Ukraine" soon afterwards, in November 1938.In November 1938, under the First Vienna Award, which resulted from the Munich agreement, Nazi Germany and Italy prevailed on Czechoslovakia to cede the southern third of Slovakia and southern Carpatho-Ukraine to Hungary.Slovak and Ruthenian demands for independence grew after Czechoslovakia's central government was forced to give up Sudetenland to Germany according to the Munich agreement of September 29, 1938. Republic of Carpatho-Ukraine: Carpatho-Ukraine (Ukrainian: Karpats'ka Ukrayina) was a short-lived Ukrainian state that formally existed for only several days in March. The state was in the easternmost part of Czechoslovakia (Subcarpathian Ruthenia, or Transcarpathia), and had been an autonomous region within Czechoslovakia for several months before ...

Poles who have saved Europe...
The Polish-Soviet War (February 1919 -- March 1921) was an armed conflict of Soviet Russia and Soviet Ukraine against the Second Polish Republic and the short-lived Ukrainian People's Republic, four states in post-World War I Europe. The war was the result of conflicting expansionist attempts. Poland, whose statehood had just been re-established by the Treaty of Versailles following the Partitions of Poland in the late 18th century, sought to secure territories which she had lost at the time of partitions; the Soviets' aim was to control those same territories, which had been part of Imperial Russia until the turbulent events of the Great War. Both States claimed victory[1] in the war: the Poles claimed a successful defense of their state, while the Soviets claimed a repulse of the Polish eastward invasion of Ukraine and Belarus, which they viewed as a part of foreign intervention in the Russian Civil War. The frontiers between Poland and Soviet Russia had not been defined in the Treaty of Versailles and post-war events created turmoil: the Russian Revolution of 1917; the crumbling of the Russian, German and Austrian empires; the Russian Civil War; the Central Powers' withdrawal from the eastern front; and the attempts of Ukraine and Belarus to establish their independence. Poland's Chief of State, Józef Piłsudski, felt the time expedient to expand Polish borders as far east as feasible, to be followed by the creation of a Polish-led federation (Międzymorze) of several ...

The Polish-Bolshevik War 1919-1921
Until 1989, while communists held power in a People's Republic of Poland, the Polish-Soviet War was omitted or minimized in Polish and other Soviet bloc countries' history books, or was presented as foreign intervention during the Russian Civil War to fit in with communist ideology. One of the most easily overlooked, yet momentous short wars of the 20th century was the swift-moving clash between the post-World War I Polish Republic and Russias brand-new Bolshevik regime of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. Reaching a climax during the summer of 1920, the Russo-Polish War is often regarded as the final episode of the Russian Civil War. In fact, it was much more — at once a reflection of the age-old enmity between two Slavic neighbors and a Marxist crusade bent on varying the torch of revolution into the heart of Europe. The campaign featured a remarkable cast of characters on both sides and mixed ferocious cavalry charges with early blitzkrieg tactics in quest of exceptional objectives.Bolshevik commanders in the Red Army's coming offensive would include Leon Trotsky, Mikhail Tukhachevsky (new commander of the Western Front), the future Soviet ruler Joseph Stalin and the founder of the Cheka (secret police)Feliks Dzierżyński. Germany and France were war weary and were experiencing problems such as unemployment and general economic disruption. Lenin already had political agitators in those countries, but in order for his Revolution to succeed he would need the presence of a military ...

Estate 2009 - Tiraspol (Transnistria - Moldavia) - By becco travels
---------------------------------- Transnistria is a breakaway territory located mostly on a strip of land between the Dniester River and the eastern Moldovan border to Ukraine. Since its declaration of independence in 1990, and especially after the War of Transnistria in 1992, it is governed de facto as the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR, also known as "Pridnestrovie"), an unrecognized state which claims the territory to the east of the river ...

The Republic of Moldova
www.youtube.com -- in HQ Republic of Moldova (Republica Moldova) is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, located between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east and south. In the Middle Ages, most of the present territory of Moldova was part of the Principality of Moldavia. In 1812, it was annexed by the Russian Empire, and became known as Bessarabia. Between 1856 and 1878, one of the eight counties was returned to Moldavia, which in 1859 united with Wallachia to form modern Romania. Upon the dissolution of the Russian Empire in 1917, an autonomous, then independent Moldavian Democratic Republic was formed, which joined Romania in 1918. In 1940, Bessarabia was occupied by the Soviet Union and was split between the Ukrainian SSR and the newly-created Moldavian SSR. After changing hands in 1941 and 1944 during World War II, the country became again part of the Soviet Union until its declaration of independence on August 27, 1991. Moldova was admitted to the UN in March 1992. In September 1990, a breakaway government was formed in Transnistria, a strip of Moldavian SSR on the left bank of the river Dniester, and after a brief war in 1992 became de facto independent, although no UN member has recognized its independence.

1708 Tragedy Studied by Ukrainian Archeologists
ANCHOR: At present Baturyn is a small Ukrainian town, but some time ago it was home for Ivan Mazepa -- a legendary commander or "hetman" in Ukrainian. STORY: The Russian army destroyed Baturyn during the 18th century. Now archeologists are trying to reconstruct the town in cooperation with the Ukrainian government. [Anna Todorova, Moscow Archeologist]: "We can say that for residents of Baturyn this was a tragedy. The cruelty of Menshikov throws a shadow over the Russian Army of that time, in any case this is our history and we should not reject it." One Professor says Baturyn was destroyed as revenge against the Ukrainian commander Ivan Mazepa. During the Nothern War with Sweden, Mazepa turned on his Russian Rulers, and fought with the Swedish against the Tsar. Experts say Mazepa was trying to use the war to gain independence for Ukraine from Russia. But Russia ended up winning the war, and the Tsar ordered Mazepa's hometown of Baturyn to be destroyed. [Vladimir Mezentsev, Professor, Univ. of Toronto]: "It was not just that Mazepa was a traitor and it was not just a stance against the Russian Empire and the break up of relationship between two friendly peoples. The problem was truly in that Ukrainians wanted the right for self-identification, for building their own nation, and that was considered harmful at the time. Since then all historical monuments disappeared. In the Soviet Union all relics from 17-18th centuries that had been unearthed by archeologists were ...

Visit of Kyiv/Kiev (Ukraine)
(EN) Kiev or Kyiv (Ukrainian: Київ, Kyiv), is the capital and the largest city of Ukraine, located in the north central part of the country on the Dnieper River. The population as of the 2001 census was 2611300. However, higher numbers have been cited in the press. Kiev is an important industrial, scientific, educational and cultural centre of Eastern Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions and world-famous historical landmarks. The city has an extensive infrastructure and highly developed system of public transport, including the Kiev Metro. The name Kiev is said to derive from the name of Kyi, one of four legendary founders of the city (brothers Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv and sister Lybid'). During its history, Kiev, one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, passed through several stages of great prominence and relative obscurity. The city may have been founded in the 5th century as a trading post, perhaps part of the land of the early Slavs. It gradually acquired eminence as the centre of the East Slavic civilization, becoming in the tenth to twelfth centuries a political and cultural capital of Rus', a medieval East Slavic state. Completely destroyed during the Mongol invasion in 1240, the city lost most of its influence for the centuries to come. It was a provincial capital of marginal importance in the outskirts of the territories controlled by its powerful neighbors: first the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, followed by Poland and Russia ...

Chechnya the Dirty War
The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria ( /ɪtʃˈkɛriə/; Chechen Latin: Noxc̈iyn Pac̈ẋalq Noxc̈iyc̈ó, Chechen Cyrillic: Нохчийн Пачхьалкх Нохчийчоь; Russian: Чеченская Республика Ичкерия; abbreviated as "ChRI" or "CRI") is the unrecognized secessionist government of Chechnya. The republic was proclaimed in late 1991 by Dzokhar Dudayev, and fought two devastating wars with the Russian Federation, which denounced the secession. In late 2007, the President of Ichkeria Dokka Umarov declared that he had renamed the republic to Noxc̈iyc̈ó and converted it into a province of the much larger Caucasus Emirate, with himself as Emir. This change has been widely rejected by some members of the former Chechen government-in-exile. Ichkeria was a member of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization. Former president of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, deposed in a military coup of 1991 and a leading participant in the Georgian Civil War, recognised the independence of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in 1993.[3] Diplomatic relations with Ichkeria were also established by the partially recognized Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan under the Taliban government on January 16, 2000. This recognition ceased with the fall of the Taliban in 2001.[4] However, despite Taliban recognition, there were no friendly relations between the Taliban and Ichkeria- Maskhadov rejected their recognition, stating that the Taliban were illegitimate.[5] Ichkeria also received vocal support from the Baltic countries, a ...

Ukraine's 20th Anniversary of Independence Gala - Debut of "Kyiv Golden Domes" song
"Kyiv Golden Domes" is a song from the upcoming musical "Dynamo - a true musical". It was performed at the Ukraine's 20th Anniversary of Independence Gala on December 1, 2011 by Ruslana. Introducing Dynamo - a true musical. Kolya, Sasha, Vanya, and Nicolay, childhood friends, grew up playing football together. Now it is 1942 in a German accupied Ukraine these four friends are reunited by Iosif Kordik, a baker, and challenged to continue to fight Germans. These Dynamo football players laugh, play and win together. Their victories and sacrifice bring hope to a ravaged nation. Dynamo was fighting for Ukraine with the only weapons they had left, their feet! Do you know? It's true! Hitler had been sending empty trains from Berlin to Ukraine just to fill them with rich topsoil for poor German gardens. He traded the blood of Ukraine's men and women for dirt! That was a football team crying out, "we are worth more than dirt!" Dynamo defeats the German team in the championship match, Ukraine's fans cheer wildly, unaware of the consequences to follow. In the end, history remembers; Nicolay, was tortured to death. Kolya, never again saw his family. He and Sasha and Vanya were beaten nearly to death and then shot. Today two monuments stand in Kyiv honoring the boys, the men of Dynamo, and what has come to be called, their "Death Match". Dynamo is a joyful, exuberant, laugh-out-loud, cry-your-eyes-out, story of hope. Nineteen songs, rich choreography and beautiful sets will carry the ...
