Fifa World Cup History : 1978 part 1
The 1978 FIFA World Cup, the 11th staging of the FIFA World Cup, was held in Argentina between 1 and 25 June. The 1978 World Cup was won by Argentina who beat the Netherlands 3--1 after extra time in the final. This win was the first World Cup title for Argentina, who became the fifth team (after Uruguay, Italy, England and West Germany), to be both hosts and world champions. The official match ball was the Adidas Tango.

Antonio Cabrini - FIFA's World Cup 1978 Best Young Player - part 7/7 Italy-Brazil
Highlights from Antonio Cabrini's Mundial 1978 game vs Brazil for the third place. The Juventus left back won the FIFA's Best Young Player Award for the 1978 World Cup (To read more about this award, visit: www.fifa.com ). Amazingly he had made his very first international appearance for Italy in the World cup itself: Italy's opening game against France! Here are some highlights from the third place game against Brazil, lost by Italy 1-2 after leading 1-0 at half-time. But it is widely beleived that Italy was probably the best team of the tournament, beating the home team and future champions Argentina 1-0 in the first round of the tournament. Bearzot's 1978 team was clearly better than the 1982 champions, playing more entertaining and offensive football. Italy's coach Bearzot had won his bet in introducing fresh blood to his team in Argentina; mainly the attacking left defender Cabrini and the remarkable new forward star Paolo Rossi. But lack of experience and incredible goals conceeded from outside the box cost them to loose their two last decisive games against Holland and Brazil 2-1, after leading 1-0 at half-time in both of the games. Cabrini had nevertheless a terrific tournament and stayed on to be a regular for the Azzurris for the next 10 years, playing 2 more World Cups (1982 and 1986), and scoring 9 goals (a record for a defender) in 73 appearances (In comparaison, Maldini scored 7 times in 126 appearances). The story and success of Cabrini should be an example ...

World Cup 1978 Italy vs Argentina - 2nd half
Italy-Argentina 1-0 (Bettega 67') Italy: Zoff - Gentile, Cabrini, Benetti, Bellugi (6' Cuccureddu), Scirea - Causio, Tardelli, P. Rossi, Antognoni (73' Zaccarelli), Bettega. Ct: Bearzot. Argentina: Fillol - Olguin, Tarantini, Gallego, Luis Galvan, Passarella - Bertoni, Ardiles, Kempes, Valencia, Ortiz (72' Houseman). Ct: Menotti. This was the last game of the first round. With both teams having secured places in the second round (2 victories each, over France and Hungary), the outcome was who would be first and thus stay in Buenos Aires. The game started cautiously for both sides, with more focus on collective play than individual tries to create scoring opportunities. Bellugi got injured within 2 minutes and Cuccureddu replaced him in the 6' minute, making it 9 Juventus players on the field (Paolo Rossi and Antognoni were the only non-Juventini)! Passarella was the top man for the home country, creating real threat in the box on corners and free kicks with his powerful headers. Bettega, Causio and Paolo Rossi were quick and clever up-front for Italy, nicely supported by the solid Benetti, the surging Tardelli and the confident back trio of Scirea-Gentile-Cabrini. Antognoni was a bit lost and was again substituted by Zacccarelli as the game advanced. 0-0 at half time, the game was excitingly settled by the inspired attacking Italians in the 67' minute, after a superb one-two Bettega-Rossi-Bettega. The Argentinians seemed incapable of forcing the draw. The Azzurri had ...

1978 FIFA World Cup Final
The Final of the 1978 FIFA World Cup was contested between hosts Argentina and The Netherlands. The match was won by the Argentines in extra time by a score of 3--1. Mario Kempes, who finished as the tournament's top scorer, was named the man of the match. The Netherlands lost their second World Cup final in a row, both times to the host nation, after losing to West Germany in 1974. The final is mired in some controversy as the Dutch accused the Argentines of using stalling tactics to delay the match. The host team came out late and questioned the legality of a plaster cast on René van de Kerkhof's wrist, which the Dutch claimed allowed tension to build in front of a hostile Buenos Aires crowd. The Netherlands refused to attend the post-match ceremonies after the match ended. Final Score: 3-1 ET (1-1 90 MINS) (1-0 HT) Argentina 3 Kempes 38', 105' Bertoni 116' Netherlands 1 Nanninga 82'

Antonio Cabrini - FIFA's World Cup 1978 Best Young Player - part 2/7 Italy-Hungary
Italy's defender Antonio Cabrini won the FIFA's Best Young Player Award for the 1978 World Cup (To read more about this award, visit: www.fifa.com ). Amazingly the Juventus future star played his very first international game for Italy in the World cup itself, in Italy's opening game against France! Here are the highlights from his second game against Hungary. Cabrini was just 20 years old and had played only 15 games for his club in the 1977/1978 season mostly as a substitute; but he had a terrific tournament and stayed on to be a regular for the Azzurris for the next 10 years, playing 2 more World Cups (1982 and 1986), and scoring 9 goals (a record for a defender) in 73 appearances (In comparaison, Maldini scored 7 times in 126 appearances). The story and success of Cabrini should be an example for Davide Santon to get inspiration from and to follow in the 2010 World Cup; but maybe this depends more on Lippi learning Bearzot's lessons! This video is part 2 of 7 videos with highlights from all the 7 games played by Cabrini at the 1978 World Cup: vs France, Hungary, Argentina, West Germany, Austria, Holland and Brazil.

FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 - Host Cities
The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be the 20th FIFA World Cup, an international football tournament that is expected to take place between June and July 2014 in Brazil. This will be the second time the country has hosted the competition, the first being the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Brazil will become the fifth country to have hosted the FIFA World Cup twice, after Mexico, Italy, France and Germany. It will be the first World Cup to be held in South America since the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina, and the first time two consecutive World Cups are staged in the Southern Hemisphere. Seventeen cities showed interest in being chosen as World Cup host cities: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, Brasília, Belém, Campo Grande, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Fortaleza, Goiânia, Manaus, Natal, Recife/Olinda (a stadium will be shared by both cities), Rio Branco and Salvador. Maceió withdrew in January 2009. According to current FIFA practice, no more than one city may use two stadiums, and the number of host cities is limited between eight and ten. The Brazilian Confederation requested permission to assign twelve cities hosting World Cup Finals. On 26 December 2008, FIFA gave the green light to the 12-city plan. Even before the twelve host cities were selected, there are few doubts that the chosen venue for the final match will be the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro, which also hosted the final match for the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Originally the CBF's intentions ...
