Headingley Stadium is a sporting complex in the Leeds suburb of Headingley in West Yorkshire, England. It is the home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, rugby league team Leeds Rhinos and rugby union team Leeds Carnegie (formerly known as Leeds Tykes).

There are two separate grounds, with a two-sided stand housing common facilities. Initially, the whole complex was owned by the Leeds Cricket, Football and Athletic Company, which is the parent company of both rugby clubs. Yorkshire County Cricket Club purchased the cricket ground on 31 December 2005 and, as announced on 11 October 2006, the whole ground is managed as one jointly between Yorkshire C.C.C. and Leeds Rugby.^[1] This type of joint cricket and football/rugby stadia were typical in 19th century England, and is how Bramall Lane and Park Avenue originally were.

Since 11 January 2006, the stadium has officially been known as the Headingley Carnegie Stadium as a result of sponsorship from Leeds Metropolitan University, whose sports faculty is known as the Carnegie School of Sport Exercise and Physical Education.^[2]

The Carnegie Floodlit Nines rugby league nines tournament was held at Headingley stadium for the first time on Wednesday 27 August 2008.

Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground (usually shortened to Headingley) adjoins the rugby stadium through a shared main stand, although the main entrance to the cricket ground is at the opposite Kirkstall Lane end. It has seen Test cricket since 1899 and has a capacity of 17,500.

In 1902, Yorkshire beat the touring Australians by five wickets, after dismissing them for 23 in their second innings with George Herbert Hirst and Stanley Jackson taking five wickets each.

Donald Bradman's innings of 334 in the 1930 Ashes Test included 309 runs on the first day, and he followed it in the Australians' next test at Headingley in 1934 with an innings of 304.

Spinner Hedley Verity took 10 wickets for 10 runs in 1932 for Yorkshire v Nottinghamshire, still the best bowling analysis ever in first-class cricket. Verity had also taken all ten against Warwickshire at Headingley in 1931.

In the 1948 Ashes series, Australia scored 404 for three on the last day to beat England. Arthur Morris scored 182 and Bradman scored 173 not out.

In the Third Test against New Zealand in 1965 John Edrich hit 53 fours and 5 sixes in his 310 not out. Captain M.J.K. Smith declaring before Edrich had a chance to pass Gary Sobers Test record 365 not out, and England won by an innings and 187 runs.^[3]

In the final match of the 1975 Ashes series, early on Tuesday 19 August head groundsman George Cawthray discovered that campaigners calling for the release from prison of George Davis had dug holes in the pitch and poured oil over one end of the wicket, This led to the match being abandoned and declared a draw, denying England the chance to win back the Ashes.^[4]

In the 1977 Ashes test, Geoff Boycott scored his hundredth first-class hundred. Four days later, by winning the same game, England won the series and regained the Ashes.

In the 1981 Ashes series, Headingley provided the stage for one of the most dramatic comebacks in Test cricket, when England beat Australia by 18 runs. Bookmakers had quoted odds of 500-1 against an England victory after they followed on 227 runs behind and then collapsed to 135 for seven in their second innings. However Ian Botham scored 149 not out, and then Bob Willis took eight wickets for 43, to give England an eventual 18-run victory. Two members of the Australian team had taken the 500-1 odds. This was only the second time in the entire history of Test cricket that a side had followed-on and won; something which would not occur again until 2001. ^[5]

Headingley during 2001 Test series

In the Test of 1991, Graham Gooch scored a match-winning 154 not out, carrying his bat throughout England's second innings of 252, against the West Indies including Malcolm Marshall, Curtley Ambrose and Courtney Walsh.

In a game they had to win to stay in the 1999 Cricket World Cup, the eventual cup-winners Australia chased down South Africa's 271 for seven after being 48 for three. Steve Waugh, who had been dropped by Herschelle Gibbs as he attempted to throw the ball up in celebration, scored 120 not out.^[6]

In 2000, England dismissed the West Indies for 61 to win by an innings and in two days, with Andrew Caddick taking four wickets in an over. England won again seven years later in 2007, as Ryan Sidebottom took eight wickets for 86 in two innings as England subjected the Windies to their worst Test defeat ever, an innings and 283 runs.

In August 2001, England successfully chased 315 to beat Australia, with Mark Butcher scoring an unbeaten 173 as England won by six wickets.^[7] However in August 2009 in the 4th test of The Ashes series, Australia beat England in 2½ days by an innings and 80 runs. Australia took twenty wickets with an attack without a spin bowler. England's middle order batsmen (Ravi Bopara, Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood) scored 16 runs between them in two innings.

Owning the ground[link]

In December 2005 Yorkshire County Cricket Club obtained a loan of £9 million from Leeds City Council towards the cost of purchasing the cricket ground for £12 million.^[8] Shortly afterwards, 98.37% of members who participated in a vote backed the deal.^[8] On 11 January 2006, the club announced plans to rebuild the stand next to the rugby ground with 3,000 extra seats, taking capacity to 20,000.^[9] The club also announced plans to redevelop the Winter Shed (North) stand on 25 August 2006 providing a £12.5 million pavilion complex.^[10][11]

Future Developments[link]

Yorkshire County Cricket Club have shown keen interest in redeveloping the northern side of the ground. This is a major inconvenience to Leeds Rugby Limited as they wish to redevelop their North Stand, which backs onto the Cricket Ground, any redevelopment of this stand cannot go ahead until Yorkshire Cricket are also willing to redevelop their side of the cricket pitch. If Headingley is to retain Test Ground Status it is likely that further improvements will need to be made to the ground. Any future development is likely to increase the capacity of the ground as well as providing new corporate and banqueting facilities. Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Metropolitan University have recently unveiled their plan for the new Headingley Carnegie Pavilion, which will replace 'The Shed' to the northern side of the Cricket Ground (which dating from the early 1970s is the oldest surviving part of the cricket ground). The new structure will be of a modernist design.^[12]

Headingley Carnegie Pavilion

The new pavilion will replace 'The Winter Shed' and 'The Media Centre' at the Kirkstall Lane end of the ground. According to Yorkshire County Cricket Club the current media centre is obsolete and does not meet the requirements of modern broadcasters. The changing facilities will also be replaced by 'state of the art' changing facilities, designed specifically for Cricket, while the executive boxes will be replaced by new facilities that will provide the modern expected level of service. Yorkshire County Cricket Clubs offices will also be relocated into the pavilion. The new pavilion will boast environmental credentials such as having a ground source heat pump and solar hot water heating.^[12][13]

Leeds St. Johns, who were later to become Leeds Rugby League Football Club then Leeds Rhinos, moved to Headingley in 1889 and built Headingley stadium. Since then the stadium has staged more than 40 international matches and countless domestic finals. The ground now has a capacity of 21,000. ^[15] It is the second largest stadium in Leeds after Elland Road.

In the 1930s, major developments took place on two sides of the rugby ground. The South Stand was completed in 1931, with some of the work being carried out by club players, while the old wooden North Stand was burned down during a match against Halifax on 25 March 1931. By the end of 1932, a new North Stand had been completed.

The record attendance at Headingley was 40,175 for the rugby league match between Leeds and Bradford on 21 May 1947. Undersoil heating was installed in 1963 but has since been removed due to ongoing problems, and floodlights were installed in 1966. The 1970 Rugby League World Cup final between Great Britain and Australia was played at the stadium. New changing rooms were added in 1991.

In July 1998, Leeds RUFC became part of the world's first dual-code rugby partnership, Leeds Rugby Limited.

In 2001 capacity was increased marginally by extending the terracing around the corner in between the Western Terraces and the North Stand.

2006 saw the construction of the Carnegie Stand. Built to replace the old eastern terrace, it was opened on 1 September 2006 for the Super League match between Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves. The building of this stand replaced the ageing executive facilities which were previously situated towards the rear of the Eastern Terraces.

The rugby stadium benefits from many facilities. The South Stand has its own bar, bookmakers and catering facilities. The media centre is situated on the roof of the South Stand. The North Stand benefits from a joint bar with the Cricket side 'The Watering Hole' as well as mobile catering facilities. The new Carnegie Stand has executive boxes, bars and a restaurant. The Western terraces house both the club scoreboard and the Sky Sports videoboard. Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Carnegie share a club shop in between the North and Carnegie Stands.

Redevelopment[link]

There is current debate over what part of the stadium is to be redeveloped next. It was the hope of Leeds Rhinos to redevelop the North Stand. However, because this was double sided it required the co-operation of Yorkshire Cricket. Yorkshire Cricket, however, showed no intention of redeveloping its side of the stand for some time, instead wanting to redevelop parts of the opposite side of the ground first. There is also limited scope for improvement as neither side of the stand can be expanded without encroaching on the other. There have since been talks about redeveloping either the South Stand or the open terraces to the west of the ground. However this would probably involve demolishing six houses and re-routing a public right of way. For the 2008 Super League Final Eliminator against Wigan Warriors, the lower half of the South Stand was closed for safety reasons and the capacity reduced. Following a safety inspection repairs to the lower half of the stand were required and a permanent reduction in capacity of the stand from 8,000 to 6,000 imposed. These repairs, however, have only been given a safety certificate for 2 years and Leeds Rugby are currently drawing up plans and arranging funding for the stand's replacement.

The ground hosted a capcity crowd for the 2012 World Club Challenge between the Leeds Rhinos and Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

Headingley is a suburb of Leeds in West Yorkshire, England. It is approximately two miles out of the city centre, to the north west along the A660 road. Headingley is notable for being the location of the Beckett Park campus for Leeds Metropolitan University and Headingley Stadium.

Headingley is first mentioned in the Domesday Book as Hedingelei or Hedingeleia in 1086 where it is recorded Ilbert de Lacy held 7 carucates (about 840 acres) of land. The name is widely thought to mean "clearing of Hedda's people", with the -ley suffix identifying an Anglo-Saxon origin and Hedda sometimes being identified with Saint Hædde.^[1] However, a stone coffin found near Beckett Park in 1995 suggests there may have been an earlier settlement in late Roman or post-Roman times.

From Viking times, Headingley was the centre of the wapentake of Skyrack, or Siaraches, the "Shire oak". The name may refer to an oak tree that was used as a meeting place for settling legal disputes and raising armies. An ancient oak, said to be the Shire Oak, stood to the north of St Michael's Church until 1941, and gives its name to two pubs, The Original Oak and The Skyrack.^[2]

During the 13th century William de Poiteven gave land in Headingley to Kirkstall Abbey, and in 1341 the remainder of the township of Headingley-cum-Burley was given to the monastery by the then owner, John de Calverley.

A map of 1711 shows Headingley as having a chapel, cottages, and farmsteads scattered around a triangle of land formed by the merging of routes from north, west and south. Enclosed fields were situated around the settlement with a large tract of common land, Headingley Moor, to the north. In an 1801 census, Headingley's population is given as 300.

An 1829 Act of Parliament enclosed Headingley Moor and the land was placed for sale. Around 30 workers' cottages had by then encroached upon the fringes of the moor prior to 1829. Land in this vicinity was generally cheaper than that at Headingley Hill as it failed to attract the building of affluent villas. This brought about the building of smaller terraced housing around Moor Road and Cottage Road. In the mid 19th century, Far Headingley had begun to develop over what was largely unclaimed common land.

Headingley continued to be a village until the expansion of Leeds during the industrial revolution and became a popular suburb where the rich moved to escape the filth and pollution of the city.

In 1840, it became the site of Leeds' Zoological and Botanical Gardens. Despite the opening of Headingley railway station, serving the gardens, in 1849, the zoo was a loss-making venture and closed in 1858. The bear pit still survives and can be seen on Cardigan Road.^[3]

The Meanwood Beck, to the east of the village, was a source of water for the early inhabitants and later provided a source of power for the Victorians of Leeds.

The Leeds Tramway terminated at a depot at Far Headingley from 1875 to 1959, improving the accessibility of Headingley from Leeds city centre. Improved transport facilitated further growth and attracted many more affluent middle class inhabitants. The tramway perhaps ended Headingley's village status and made it into a suburb of Leeds.

With exception of Beckett Park and the surrounding area, most of Headingley had been developed by the beginning of the twentieth century. In a 1911 census the population of Headingley was in excess of 46,000.

The area has a history of student inhabitation, with Leeds Metropolitan University having a campus at Beckett Park in Headingley. Much of the housing around Kirkstall Lane is rented to students. The conversion of Leeds Polytechnic into a University and its subsequent growth has brought about an increased student population in Headingley in the last ten years.

Throughout Headingley's modern era, the Rugby and Cricket stadiums have been significant in the fabric of the area. A major England test match or a Rugby League derby brings many spectators to the area. The cricket ground has been enlarged in recent years to maintain its eligibility for test matches while in 2006 the Eastern terraces on the Rugby ground were replaced with the current Carnegie stand. The winter shed cricket pavilion has been replaced with a new stand and media centre.

University district[link]

As Headingley is close to both the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University campuses, it has become a very popular student area. This has had both positive and negative consequences on the local population and environment. The biggest complaints against students (and increasingly, young professionals) relate to the use of multiple-occupancy houses which are prone to burglary, often neglected by landlords and occupants alike and are typically left unoccupied during university holidays. However, the student population has brought money into the area, improved public transport and, generally, made it a more desirable place to live for a portion of the population.^{[citation needed]}

Family areas still exist such as in Far Headingley or the Triangle near the Co-op on Cardigan Rd.

Professional[link]

Headingley is also known in sporting circles — its stadium (known as Headingley) is home to the Yorkshire County Cricket Club as well as the Leeds Rhinos rugby league and Leeds Carnegie rugby union clubs. Headingley is also the home of the FA Chartership Team of the Year 2006, Old Headingley. The team currently plays in the West Yorkshire League Division 1. Old Headingley recently won the Barkston Ash FA Cup on 9 April 2007, winning the final 2–0 against Sherburn White Rose.

For many decades the Headingley Stadium remained largely unchanged, however since 2000 the cricket ground has been nearly entirely rebuilt in order to retain test ground status. The winter shed was demolished in 2008 and replaced by a new stand and media centre, giving the approach to the north entrance a distinctive and modern waymark. The rugby ground also saw development with the building of the Carnegie Stand which replaced the former Eastern Terraces. This was built with co-operation from Leeds Metropolitan University who retain lecture rooms in the building. The South Stand has a reduced capacity for 2009 as repairs are needed to the front of the terraces,^[4] this has brought about the consideration of replacing either the South Stand or Western Terraces. The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that the 'safety concerns were likely to lead to the stand being demolished and rebuilt'. The North Stand of the rugby ground was the preferential stand to be redeveloped, however as it backs onto the cricket ground it required mutual co-operation. Yorkshire County Cricket Club preferred to redevelop the dilapidated Winter Shed instead.

Amateur[link]

Headingley also boasts an amateur Association Football team, Old Headingley AFC which is made up of engineering students from Leeds Metropolitan University. The club nearly folded after losing its home ground, however in 2008, the club was offered a new ground by the University of Bradford.^[5] There is also an amateur cricket club in Far Headingley.

Politics[link]

Politically, almost all of Headingley is in the Leeds North West constituency. The current Member of Parliament (MP) is Greg Mulholland (Liberal Democrat), who became the first Liberal Democrat MP in West Yorkshire in the 2005 General Election. At a local government level, the ward of Headingley has two Liberal Democrat councillors, Martin Hamilton (2010–2014) and Jamie Matthews (2008–2012), and one Labour councillor, Neil Walshaw (2011-2015).^[6] The victory for Labour in 2011 ended a period of dominance by the Liberal Democrats.

A small part of Headingley, specifically the area around Queenswood Drive, is in the Kirkstall ward of the Leeds West constituency, where the current MP is Rachel Reeves of Labour.

Headingley has two renowned fish and chip shops/ fish restaurants^[7] who have been serving since the 1930s: Brett's, a 19th century stone building on North Lane, and Bryan's, a more modern building on Weetwood Lane. There are several pubs and bars plus extensive shopping areas. The pub Headingley Taps is so called because it was formerly a water pumping station.^[8]. Other pubs and bars include the famous Original Oak, Skyrack, Arcadia and The Arc. Close by in Far Headingley are in close proximity The New Inn, The Three Horseshoes and Woodies. In the Headingley Arndale Centre there is a Sainsbury's (formerly a Somerfield), a Wilkinson and several other chain shops as well as a small multi-storey car park. There are many banks, building societies, restaurants, cafes and charity shops. Along Otley Road there is a Boots the Chemist and a large Oxfam bookshop. Until 2005 Headingley had two cinemas, 'The Lounge' and 'The Cottage Road Cinema' (usually referred to as 'Cottage Road'). The Lounge Cinema in the centre of Headingley has since closed and is being redeveloped as office and living accommodation, leaving only Cottage Road in Far Headingley. The area's Woolworths closed in the 1990s. Until the 1980s, the Arndale Centre boasted a bowling alley. The Arndale Centre began undergoing an external facelift in 2009. The nearest large supermarket is a Morrisons in Kirkstall, approximately a mile away from the centre of Headingley.

People[link]

Many famous writers, past and present, are connected with Headingley: Arthur Ransome, best known perhaps for the children's classic Swallows and Amazons, was born there, J. R. R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, lived there when he worked at the university, playwright Alan Bennett once lived over a butcher's shop (now a dry cleaner's) opposite the Three Horseshoes and TV writer Kay Mellor lives in Weetwood today.^{[citation needed]}

In the time of Queen Victoria, Prince Alemayehu of Abyssinia, brought to England after the defeat of his father King Tewedros, died of pneumonia at an address in Hollin Lane, Far Headingley.^[9]

Edward Baines, editor of the Leeds Mercury in the nineteenth century, had a grand house (since demolished) in Headingley.^{[citation needed]}

Actor David Prosho is a resident of Headingley.^{[citation needed]}

Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe committed two of his 20 attacks in Headingley. He killed 20-year-old Jacqueline Hill - the last of the 13 women he killed - in the area on 17 November 1980.^[10] On 24 September that year, he had also attacked Singapore born doctor Upadhya Bandara, 34, in the area, but she survived his assault. Sutcliffe was arrested within two months of Ms Hill's murder and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment for a total of 13 murders and seven attempted murders.^[11]

Celebrate Headingley[link]

Celebrate Headingley is an annual series of events organised by Headingley Network, taking place for the ninth time in September 2009. It has been growing and developing since the first one in September 2001. The main intentions are to bring together members of a community which is often seen as beleaguered, to celebrate the diversity and strengths of the local population and to provide opportunities for residents to enjoy each other’s company in a variety of social situations. Events include musical, literary, social and children's events, and local restaurants offer special deals.^[12]

Headingley Development Trust[link]

Headingley Development Trust (HDT) is an organisation, made up of concerned local residents and small businesses, formed with the aim of promoting and developing a sustainable community in Headingley. Currently HDT has over 825 members and runs many projects in the area.

Headingley in Bloom is responsible for planting flowers around Headingley with the help of local school children. Cafe Scientifique is a place where local residents can meet for mini ‘lectures’ on all things Scientific. Headingley Homes is a project which directly intervenes into the housing market. To address the demographic imbalance HH aims to purchase homes to be leased to families rather than continue as a HMOs (houses of multiple occupation). Pig and Fowl Co-ops is the newest project from HDT set up to purchase chicken and pork direct from the producer. This gives members access to high quality meat, humanely reared and killed, supporting local organic farming. Farmers Market. happens every second Saturday of the month which is certified by FARMA and is one of the most visible and successful projects of the Trust.

HDT have refurbished and developed Headingleys old primary school building on Bennett Road into a Headingley Enterprise and ARTs centre – HEART. It is to date Headingley's biggest ever community project. HEART accommodates rehearsal and meeting spaces and training rooms on the ground floor, a café with outdoor and conservatory seating areas and a 'catalyst’ business centre on the first floor particularly targeted at the arts and media industry. Besides the advantages of keeping the school in community use and introducing much needed facilities to central Headingley, HDT believes that HEART will create a new cultural buzz in Headingley, provide a space that all residents of Headingley can enjoy, secure the local business base and help to encourage graduates to stay on to make Headingley their permanent home.

Headingley Parish Church

St Columba United Reformed Church

Headingley Parish Church is dedicated to St Michael and All Angels, and is a large, grade II* listed, steepled church on the corner of Otley Road and St Michael's Road, opposite the Skyrack public house. The Church was built between 1884–86 as the third church on this site. There is a separate parish of Far Headingley, with its parish church of St Chad's (also a large steepled church and grade II* listed).^[13]

South Parade Baptist church (1908 and 1925) and Headingley Methodist church (1840–45 and later extensions) are both grade II listed. St Columba's United Reformed church is a modern building, as is the Roman Catholic parish church of St Urban's, to the east of the area. The small Lutheran church of St Luke's in Alma Road was converted from the coach house and stable of a Victorian villa.

Buildings of architectural interest[link]

Parts of Headingley are included in Conservation areas established by Leeds City Council. Individual listed buildings include St Michael's Church and associated buildings, the Hyde Park Picture House, Moorfield House in Alma Road and the former St Margaret of Antioch church building on Cardigan Road. Headingley also has a typical example of a 1960s Arndale Centre. Housing in Headingley is generally Victorian and early twentieth century and mostly of little architectural note.

Headingley in media[link]

The ITV television series Fat Friends was set in Headingley. Large amounts of the eighties ITV Beiderbecke trilogy was filmed in and around Headingley and Becketts Park, along with Moor Grange and Pudsey. Parts of Headingley stood in for Northern Ireland in Harrys Game, and A Touch of Frost used locations in the area.

Sir Ian Terence Botham OBE (born 24 November 1955) is a former England Test cricketer and Test team captain, and current cricket commentator. He was a genuine all-rounder with 14 centuries and 383 wickets in Test cricket, and remains well-known by his nickname "Beefy".^[2] While a controversial player both on and off the field at times, Botham also held a number of Test cricket records, and still holds the record for the highest number of wickets taken by an England bowler.

He is generally regarded as being England's greatest ever all-rounder, particularly in Test cricket, although having earned celebrity status, his award of a knighthood was ostensibly in recognition of his services to charity.^[3]

Just like fellow cricketers Jim Cumbes and Arnold Sidebottom, Botham was also a talented footballer, and made 11 appearances in the Football League.

On 8 August 2009, Botham was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.^[4]

Early life[link]

Botham was born in Heswall on the Wirral, to Herbert Leslie Botham (who worked for Westland) and Violet Marie, née Collett (a nurse).^[5] Both his parents played cricket. He went to Milford Junior School in Yeovil, Somerset, where his "love affair" with sport began, and played for Somerset Under-15s.^[6] He left Bucklers Mead Comprehensive School at the age of 15 without completing his GCSEs, intent on playing cricket for Somerset, although he also had an offer to play football for Crystal Palace F.C.^[7] From an early age he was always single-minded. When informed that Botham wanted to be a sportsman, the Careers Mistress at his school said to him, "Fine, everyone wants to play sport, but what are you really going to do?" (interviewed BBC Radio 4's Fiona Glover, 20 November 2010, Saturday Live).

Domestic career[link]

In his non-first-class appearances for Somerset, his bowling figures did not stand out, but there were some sizeable scores, namely 91 for the Under-25s v Glamorgan Under-25s, 82 & 42 v Cornwall, 51 v Gloucester Under-25s, 50 v Glamorgan 2nd XI and in his last game (before his 1986 comeback match) 100 against Glamorgan 2nd XI.

In first-class cricket, he scored 19,399 runs at 33.97, took 1,172 wickets at 27.22 and held 354 catches. He played for Durham, Somerset and Worcestershire, as well as a season (1987–88) in Australia playing for Queensland.

Botham began his first-class career in 1974 with Somerset. In that year, when playing against Hampshire and facing the West Indian fast bowler Andy Roberts, a bouncer hit him straight in the mouth. He spat out teeth and simply carried on.^[8] In 1986 he resigned from Somerset County Cricket Club, in protest against the sacking of his friends Sir Viv Richards and Joel Garner, and joined Worcestershire, playing for that county between 1987 and 1991. In 1992, he joined County Championship newcomers Durham before retiring midway through the 1993 season, his last match being Durham's match against the visiting Australian XI.

Grade Cricket in Australia 1976/1977[link]

Only months before announcing his presence on the international scene, Botham played Grade cricket for the University of Melbourne Cricket Club during the 1976/77 Australian Domestic Season. In a season where 5 of the 15 rounds were abandoned owing to adverse weather, Botham joined up for the second half as a result of a sponsorship arranged through the TCCB by Whitbread's Brewery.^[9] He was joined by Yorkshire's Graham Stevenson. Botham played 4 matches, the first of which was against Northcote in a one-day game on 8 January 1977. Brought on as first change, he finished with figures of 10.5-0-83-0 (8-ball overs). He batted at number 4 being run out for 0. The opposition wicket-keeper Richie Robinson would be an opponent in the Test arena only months later. His second match was against St Kilda, scheduled as a 2-day game over consecutive weeks. It became a one day game after the first Saturday was washed out. His analysis was 10–1–39–2. He scored a hard hit 41 in 33 minutes with five 4s. His third appearance was against Essendon CC in another 2-day game. He was the side's most successful bowler with analyses of 22.7–2–92–4 but fell for another 0 caught of leg-spinner Keith Kirby. His last match was against North Melbourne CC. He was promoted to opening the batting but was caught for 3 off Neil Majewski. His bowling analysis was 27–4–86–0 against a side that included Rohan Kanhai and Ian Chappell. Prior to this game, the match against Richmond was abandoned because of rain and the last game was also abandoned. His complete analysis was 44 runs in 4 matches at a batting average of 11, and 6 wickets at a bowling average of 51.16. Botham took one catch.

International career[link]

Botham made his Test début for England on 28 July 1977 in the Third Test against Australia, where he took five wickets for 74 runs in the first innings.^[10] He went on to enjoy a Test career spanning 15 years, in which he played in 102 matches.

Botham finished his Test career with 5,200 runs at an average of 33.54, taking 383 wickets at an average of 28.40, and holding 120 catches. He is generally regarded as one of England's greatest Test players.^[11] He was also England's captain for 12 Tests in 1980 and 1981. As captain of the England XI, Botham is generally considered to have been unsuccessful. His tenure was brief and under his captaincy the team achieved no wins, 8 draws and 4 losses. In his defence, 9 of his matches as captain were against the best team of that era, the West Indies, who won 12 out of the next 13 Tests played against England.

Compared with many of cricket's greatest players, most of whom were specialists, Botham's averages seem fairly ordinary but this overlooks Botham's all-rounder status, which is rarely achieved at world-class level. Of note, Botham's first 202 wickets came at 21.20 per wicket, while his final 181 cost on average 36.43 apiece;^[12] the first average is one that would make Botham one of the greatest bowlers of the modern era, ranking alongside the West Indian greats Curtly Ambrose (career average 20.99), Malcolm Marshall (career average 20.94), and Joel Garner (career average 20.97), but the second average depicts a player who, as a specialist bowler, would be unable to sustain a place in many Test teams. This difference can be largely attributed to a back injury which limited Botham's bowling pace and his ability to swing the ball.

Botham's batting – although never the equal of his bowling abilities – declined as well, with a batting average of 38.80 for his first 51 Tests substantially higher than the 28.87 he managed in his last 51 Tests,^[13] again a number that would be considered unsatisfactory for a specialist batsman in most Test sides. In the first 5 years of Botham's Test career, when not playing as captain, he scored 2557 runs at an average of 49.17 including 11 centuries and a highest score of 208, took 196 wickets at an average of 21.28 including nineteen 5 wicket hauls and held 50 catches.^[14] Such figures denote a player who would easily maintain a place in any Test side as a specialist batsman or bowler alone. During this period his reputation as one of the leading Test all-rounders was firmly established.

He was renowned as a big-hitting batsman, though with a classical technique of playing straight, and as a fast-medium paced swing bowler who could be very effective when atmospheric conditions favoured his style.

Records[link]

Botham holds a number of Test records as an all-rounder, including being the fastest (in terms of matches) to achieve the "doubles" of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets, 2,000 runs and 200 wickets, and 3,000 runs and 300 wickets. He briefly held the world record for the greatest number of Test wickets, although his tally has subsequently been passed by several specialist bowlers. He still holds the record for the highest number of Test wickets taken by an England player (383).

Botham scored a century and took 5 wickets in an innings in the same Test match on 5 occasions; no-one else has managed this feat more than twice. In 1980, playing against India, he became the first player to score a century and take ten wickets in a Test match (Alan Davidson was the first to score 100 runs and take 10 wickets in a Test but that did not include a century).

During the 1981 Ashes, Botham set a record of six sixes in a single Ashes Test Match at Old Trafford. That record remained unbroken until 7 August 2005 when Andrew Flintoff scored five in the first innings and four in the second innings of the second Test at Edgbaston, and again until 12 September 2005, when Kevin Pietersen hit seven sixes in the second innings of the last Test at The Oval.

One Day Internationals[link]

Botham's ODI career included 116 games from 1976 to 1992. He made his debut on 26 August against the West Indies at Scarborough. He finished with a batting average of 23.21 (nine 50s, no 100s, cumulative score of 2113 runs), and a bowling average of 28.5 (strike rate 43.24, 145 wickets in total, best figures 4/31).

In 1980 Botham had been appointed captain of the England team. However, his captaincy proved to be an unhappy one; he lost form and the team did not do well.

He resigned the captaincy after a loss and a draw in the first two Tests of the 1981 Ashes series. The resignation itself was the cause of controversy, with Sir Alec Bedser, Chairman of the TCCB selectors, making it clear after media questioning that Botham would have been fired in any event.^[15] Botham himself refers to the event as his "dismissal" in his autobiography. In this Test, the Second Test played at Lord's and his last as England captain, Botham was dismissed for a pair. He returned to an embarrassed silence in the pavilion and after the previous year's events at the centenary Test, this possibly was the final straw. For the remainder of his cricket-playing career, Botham refused to acknowledge MCC members in the pavilion when playing at Lord's.^[16] However, Botham subsequently accepted the honour of Honorary Life membership of MCC and his portrait (depicting him enjoying a cigar) now hangs prominently in the Long Room Bar at Lord's.

Mike Brearley, the captain whom Botham had replaced, took up the reins again for the Third Test scheduled for 16 to 21 July, at Headingley. Australia won the toss and elected to bat. They batted all day Thursday and most of Friday, declaring after tea at 401 for 9, John Dyson having made 102 and Botham having taken 6 for 95. The England openers Graham Gooch and Geoff Boycott survived the remaining few overs, and England finished the day on 7 for no wicket.

The next day, Saturday, was a disaster for England: Gooch was out in the first over of the day, and although Boycott and Brearley then attempted to dig in, they were both out before lunch. None of the other batsmen got going at all with the exception of Botham who top scored with 50 — his first half century since his first Test as captain 13 matches earlier. England were all out in the third session for 174. Australia enforced the follow-on and piled on the pressure; Gooch was out for 0 on his third ball of the first over caught by Terry Alderman off the bowling of Dennis Lillee. By the close, England had struggled to just 6 for 1, still 221 behind Australia.

By all accounts, both teams' players thought Australia would win the match; indeed the England team had enjoyed a raucous barbecue chez Botham on the Saturday evening, such was their lack of faith in a positive result. Sunday 19 July was a rest-day and the newspapers roasted the lamentable England performance. Morale was not improved by Ladbrokes offering odds of 500–1 against England winning the match, as displayed on the Headingley electronic scoreboard! Controversially, the Australian wicket-keeper Rod Marsh and opening bowler Dennis Lillee both placed bets on England to win, later claiming that 500–1 were silly (if not incredible) odds on any two-horse race.

On the Monday morning 500–1 odds began to look somewhat more ungenerous as first Brearley, then David Gower and Mike Gatting all fell cheaply reducing England to 41 for 4. Boycott was still anchored at the other end however, and he and Peter Willey added 50 runs before lunch. In the afternoon, Willey was out for 33 and England were still in deep trouble at 105 for 5 when Botham went in to bat. Matters did not improve as first Geoff Boycott and then Bob Taylor were quickly dismissed. At 135 for 7 an innings defeat looked almost certain.

When Graham Dilley joined him at the crease, Botham reportedly said, "Right then, let's have a bit of fun...". With able support from Dilley (56) and Chris Old (29), Botham hit out and by the close of play was 145 not out with Bob Willis hanging on at the other end on 1 not out. England's lead was just 124 but there remained some glimmer of hope. On the final day's play there was time for just four more runs from Botham before Willis was out and Botham was left on 149 not out. Wisden rated this innings as the 4th best of all time.^[17]

Willis' far greater contribution was with the ball. After Botham took the first wicket, Willis skittled Australia out for just 111, finishing with figures of 8 for 43 – rated by Wisden as the 7th best bowling performance of all time.^[18] England had won by just 18 runs. It was only the second time in history that a team following-on had won a Test match.^[19]

The next Test match, at Edgbaston, looked almost as hopeless, if not hapless, from England's point of view. In a low scoring match (no-one made a score over 48), Australia needed 151 to win. At 105–5, things looked a little worrying for them, but an Australian win still seemed the most likely result. Botham then took 5 wickets for only 1 run in 28 balls to give England victory by 29 runs. Later, Brearley said that Botham had not wanted to bowl and had to be persuaded to do so.^[20]

The Old Trafford Test was less of a turnaround and more of a team effort than the previous two Tests, but Botham again was England's hero hitting yet another century in what Lillee claimed to be a better innings than his Headingley heroics. Botham had joined Chris Tavaré with the score at 104–5. Botham then scored 118 in a partnership of 149 before he was dismissed. He hit six sixes in this innings, three off Lillee's bowling, two of them in the same over. Remarkably, even though he seemed to take his eye off the ball while hooking some fearsome Lillee bouncers, his sheer power and strength carried the ball over the boundary rope. In total Botham batted for 5 hours shorter than Tavaré and yet scored 40 more runs. England won that match, then drew the last one at The Oval (Botham taking 6 wickets in the first innings), and thereby winning the series 3–1. Hardly surprisingly, Botham was named Man of the Series, scoring 399 runs and taking 34 wickets.

Football career[link]

A talented footballer as well as cricketer, Botham had to choose very early in his career whether to play professional football or cricket.^[21] At one point during his career, in an effort to get fit after an injury,^[22] in March 1980 he joined the football club Scunthorpe United, where he played as a centre half and made 11 appearances in the Football League.^[23] He also had a spell at Yeovil Town.^[23]

Controversy[link]

Botham often courted controversy and was suspended briefly in 1986 for smoking cannabis^[24] and was allegedly accused of racism and ball tampering by Imran Khan.^[25] This would become the subject of a court case later on, one that Imran Khan would go on to win. Botham was liable for all expenses in the court case in the ruling, even those incurred by Imran Khan.^[26] He also fell out publicly with other players, including fellow England opener Geoff Boycott, Somerset captain Peter Roebuck, and Australian batsman Ian Chappell, with whom he had an altercation in an Adelaide Oval car park during the 2010–11 Ashes series.^{[27][28][29][30][31]} His private life has also made occasional dramatic appearances in Britain's tabloid newspapers, with at least one extramarital affair prompting a public apology to his wife Kathy.^[32] Botham was also sacked from the Queensland team after being arrested for assault of a fellow airline passenger.^[33]

Charity walks[link]

Botham has been a prodigious fundraiser for charitable causes, undertaking a total of 12 long-distance charity walks. His first, in 1985, was a 900-mile trek from John o' Groats to Land's End. His efforts were inspired after a visit to Taunton's Musgrove Park Hospital whilst receiving treatment for a broken toe; when he took a wrong turn into a children's ward, he was devastated to learn that some of the children had only weeks to live, and why.^[34] Since then, his efforts have raised more than £12 million for charity, with Leukaemia Research among the causes to benefit.^[35]
