Vedado
Vedado (Spanish: El Vedado, Spanish pronunciation: [el βeˈðaðo]) is a central business district and urban neighborhood in the city of Havana, Cuba. Bordered on the east by Central Havana, and on the west by the Miramar / Playa district. Vedado is the most modern part of the city, developed in the first half of the 20th century, during the Republic period. The main street running east to west is Calle 23, also known as "La Rampa". The northern edge of the district is the waterfront seawall known as the Malecón, a famous and popular place for social gatherings in the city. Vedado is a ward (consejo popular) of the municipality Plaza de la Revolución.

Among the notable sites in Vedado are the hotels: Hotel Nacional de Cuba (National Hotel), the Havana Libre (former Hilton), Melia Cohiba Hotel and Hotel Riviera.

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is a historic luxury hotel located on the Malecón in the middle of Vedado, Havana, Cuba. It stands on Taganana hill a few metres from the sea, and offers a view of Havana Harbour, the seawall and the city. The New York architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White designed the hotel, which features a mix of styles. It opened in 1930, when Cuba was a prime travel destination for Americans, long before the United States embargo against Cuba. In its 80+ years of existence, the hotel has had many important guests. The hotel was built on the site of the Santa Clara Battery, which dates back to 1797. This is a quick video talking about the great, cheap food locations near the Havana medical center, in Vedado, Cuba. This area, especially along 29th street, between F and D is packed with great restaurants and fast food locations. It's right across the street from a major medical and cancer treatment center and just a few blocks away from the University of Havana. The beauty about this area is that it is remarkably hidden away. If you are simply walking along 23rd street (La Rampa) you will never even think to walk up F street or expect to find anything interesting there. This is the kind of area that only locals would know to explore. As a foreigner, you can go to this area of the city, eat some delicious food, priced very cheaply, and be completely immersed in the local culture.
In my Real Havana guide, I explore Cuba and Havana from a local perspective. My goal is to give you the basic knowledge to experience Havana like a Cuban, rather than simply a tourist.

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is a historic luxury hotel located on the Malecón in the middle of Vedado, Havana, Cuba. It stands on Taganana hill a few metres from the sea, and offers a view of Havana Harbour, the seawall and the city.
The New York architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White designed the hotel, which features a mix of styles. It opened in 1930, when Cuba was a prime travel destination for Americans, long before the United States embargo against Cuba. In its 80+ years of existence, the hotel has had many important guests.
The hotel was built on the site of the Santa Clara Battery, which dates back to 1797. Part of the battery has been preserved in the hotel's gardens, including two large coastal guns dating from the late 19th Century. There is also a small museum there featuring the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. During the crisis, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara set up their headquarters there to prepare the defence of Havana from aerial attack.
The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is a World Heritage Site and a National Monument, and it was inscribed in the World Memory Register.

Anytime, day or night, there are people walking around this area. There is a large, open air bar which is buzzing late into the night. Lots of university students and workers are always lined up along Ave de los Presidentes, as it is a very important traffic hub.
If you're in Havana, visit the Vedado neighborhood and come to this intersection. Maybe you can even relax and have a beer at the open air bar. It's an honest, authentic part of the Havana experience and you are sure to love it

This is a kind of mix between a B&B; and a home stay ... Finally it's worth taking a coco taxi (sort of Cuban rickshaw which looks like a giant orange) to the new area of the city "Vedado" to see some old colonial mansions in fancy neighborhoods and some Cuban-style modernization....

There were random questions at customs, an interminable wait to exchange money, and finally, the realization that no one from our confirmed casa particular was coming to meet us ... So there we were ... Havana was sold out ... The lack of technology made us depend on a torn paper map and local directions to find our way in leafy Vedado ... Salud! ... ....
