Obama on Gun Control, Violence, Laws and the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in Newtown (2012)
As a state legislator in Illinois, Obama supported banning the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic firearms, increasing state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms and requiring manufacturers to provide child-safety locks with firearms. In 1996, during Obama's run for the Illinois State Senate, he was surveyed by a Chicago nonprofit, Independent Voters of Illinois about criminal justice and other issues. Obama's questionnaire showed that he supported a ban on the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns. Subsequently, Obama denied that his writing was on the document and said that he never favored a ban on the sale and possession of handguns. In 1999, he urged prohibiting the operation of any gun store within five miles of a school or park, which according to gun-rights advocates would eliminate gun stores from most of the inhabited portion of the United States. He sponsored a bill in 2000 limiting handgun purchases to one per month. As state senator, he voted against a 2004 measure that allowed self-defense as an affirmative defense for those charged with violating local laws making it otherwise unlawful for such persons to possess firearms. He also voted against allowing persons who had obtained domestic violence protective orders to carry handguns for their protection. From 1994 through 2002, Obama was a board member of the Joyce Foundation, which amongst other non-gun related activities provides funds for gun control organizations in

www.nraila.org On the Second Amendment, Dont Believe Obama Obama is against the Citizens of Chicago owning pistols, why would he treat you any different as President? Obama has consistently supported gun control legislation that came up while he was in the Illinois state legislature and the US Senate. For example, when Obama ran for the Illinois state senate the political group, Independent Voters of Illinois (IVI), asked him if he supported a ban [on] the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns and he responded yes. With about one million of the countrys 12.5 million hunters, Pennsylvania is number one in the nation in the amount of time its citizens spend hunting. With about 600000 people with permits to carry concealed handguns, Pennsylvania also has more permit holders than any other state. www.foxnews.com In 2004, he said he was "consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry," and that he'd back "federal legislation that would ban citizens from carrying weapons, except for law enforcement." Mr. Obama had already put that anti-self-defense belief into action in 2001, voting against a state Senate bill that would have allowed people who receive protective orders - such as domestic violence victims - to carry firearms. Why? Because, in Mr. Obama's world, "authorizing potential victims to carry firearms would potentially lead to a more dangerous rather than less dangerous situation It was a bad idea and I'm glad it failed," he

Obama on Gun Control, Violence, Laws and the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in Newtown (2012)
On December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Peter Lanza fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the Sandy Hook village of Newtown, Connecticut. Before driving to the school, he had shot and killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their Newtown home. After shooting the students and staff members, he committed suicide. The massacre was the second-deadliest school shooting in United States history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre. It was also the second-deadliest mass murder at an American elementary school, after the Bath School bombings of 1927. en.wikipedia.org During the presidential campaign, Obama announced that he favors measures that respect Second Amendment rights, while at the same time keeping guns away from children and criminals. On February 25, 2009, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Obama administration would seek a new assault weapons ban across the United States, saying that it would have a positive impact on the drug-related violence in Mexico. After the statement drew criticism from the NRA and some House Democrats, the Administration reportedly ordered the Justice Department to end public discussion of the issue. Obama has signed into law two bills containing amendments reducing restrictions on gun owners, one which permits guns to be transported in checked baggage on Amtrak trains and another which allows carrying loaded firearms in national parks located in states allowing concealed carry. Coleman On Gun Control | Obama gun control plan
President Obama is pitching the most ambitious gun control program in decades — but whether it becomes law or not remains to be seen. While Obama said any action that can save one child's life is worth it, he and aides indicated that proposals to ban assault weapons, expand background checks, and restrict the capacity of gun magazines face big hurdles on Capitol Hill. "This will be difficult," Obama said Wednesday at the White House. "There will be pundits and politicians and special interest lobbyists publicly warning of a tyrannical, all-out assault on liberty — not because that's true, but because they want to gin up fear or higher ratings or revenue for themselves." Vice President Biden, who helped push through background checks and an assault weapons as a Delaware senator in 1993 and 1994, said he has "no illusions about what we're up against or how hard the task is in front of us." The main reason: The Republicans control one branch of Congress, the US House, and many of their members have sworn strong fidelity to Second Amendment gun rights. Gun rights supporters sharply criticized the president's proposals as ineffective, unconstitutional, and politically motivated. Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus said the plan amounts to "an executive power grab that may please his political base but will not solve the problems at hand." The National Rifle Association, which has major influence on congressional Republicans, has declared all-out opposition to the

Below are 10 Gun Laws that can be passed now. But the 'Party of Glock' keeps blocking the bills. "We lose 9000 people a year, roughly, to gun violence in this country," said Rep. Jerry Nadler (DN.Y.). "We're at war, and we haven't recognized that. We have to go to war against the people who enable the gun violence, the people who stop us from keeping guns out of the hands of mentally unstable people, of felons, and that means the NRA leadership." He argued that most Americans -- indeed many NRA members -- favor sensible gun controls, but the leaders of the organization are able to get enough "people in enough [congressional districts] to think that this is going to take guns away" to block legislation. Nadler said he would start by closing the so-called gun show loophole that allows people to buy weapons there without background checks -- unlike in gun shops -- and by banning high-capacity magazines, whose only purpose he argued is killing more people. He was not sure what other gun control advocates would want to pursue first, but he noted that in the event the Republican leadership was interested in acting, it could do so almost immediately with existing bills. Democrats also could file what's known as a petition to discharge a number of bills, and the House would have to vote on any that a majority of members had signed. There is not enough time left in 2012 for such a petition effort, but it could be started early in the new year. Ultimately, Nadler said, it is up to

And we're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics." On January 16, 2013, President Obama outlined a series of sweeping gun control proposals, urging Congress to reintroduce an expired ban on "military-style" assault weapons, such as those used in several recent mass shootings, impose limits on ammunition
