Indian National Congress (Urs)

The Indian National Congress (Urs) was a breakaway faction of the Congress (I) led by D. Devaraj Urs. It broke away from the parent party in 1978 following Indira Gandhi's drubbing in the 1977 General Elections. Urs took with him many legislators from Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Goa including future Union Ministers and Chief Ministers, Yashwantrao Chavan, Dev Kant Baruah, Kasu Brahmananda Reddy, A.K. Antony, Sharad Pawar, Sarat Chandra Sinha, Priyaranjan Das Munshi and K.P. Unnikrishnan.

Subsequently Devaraj Urs joined Janata Party; Yashwantrao Chavan, Brahmananda Reddy, and Chidambaram Subramaniam joined Congress (Indira); and A.K. Antony split from Congress (Urs) to form Congress (A) in Kerala. When Sharad Pawar took over the party presidency in October 1981, the name of the party was changed to Indian Congress (Socialist)

Congress Station will be a light rail station on the M-1 Rail Line in Detroit, Michigan. The station is expected to open for service in late 2016, and is located near the southern end of Downtown. The station services the Financial District and lower Downtown area.

Congress (Dolo), a group that split away from Indian National Congress in Arunachal Pradesh. Congress (D) was founded July 25, 2003. Together with Gegong Apang of Arunachal Congress, Congress (D) formed a state government. On August 30 Congress (D) merged with Bharatiya Janata Party.

Urs festival, Ajmer

The Urs festival is an annual festival held at Ajmer, a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, which commemorates the death anniversary of the Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti, (founder of the Chishtiya Sufi order in India). It is held over six days and features night-long dhikr/zikr qawwali singing. The anniversary is celebrated in the seventh month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Thousands of pilgrims visit the shrine from all over India and abroad.

The festival

The sixth day of the Urs is regarded as the most special and auspicious. It is called “Chhati Sharif”. It is celebrated on the 6th Rajab between 10:00 A.M. and 1:30 p.m. inside the Mazaar Sharif. Shijra is read by duty bound Khadims of Moinuddin Chishti, and then there is Fariyad (prayers).

Just before the Qu'l (conclusion of Chhati Sharif), Badhaawa (a poem of praise) is sung at the main entrance of the shrine by Qawwals.

Badhaawa is a recitation accompanied only by clapping; no musical instrument is played. It was composed by Syed Behlol Chishty, an ancestor of the present day Khadim community. After its recitation, the ceremony of the Qu'l comes to an end, and Fatiha is recited. The end of the ceremony is marked by firing a cannon at 1:30 p.m.

Urs (surname)

Urs (Kannada: ಅರಸ ) pronounced as 'Āras', is a Hindu surname used by a particular royal community (called Arasu) based in Mysore in Karnataka, India. The word Arasu or Arasa is used to designate royalty and meant ruler in all the south Indian languages including Kannada. Men in this community were commonly named as Chamaraja Urs, Nanjaraj Urs, Devraj Urs, Srikanata Raje Urs etc. and women were most commonly named as Devajammani, Jayalaxammani, Chelvajammani etc. suffixed with 'ammani'.

History

Mysore's erstwhile rulers were the Wadiyars, known for their administrative skills, vision and social justice. They had a close attachment with the Ursu community.

Legend

The original name of erstwhile Mysore region was Puragere, coming under the purview of Hadinaadu, meaning Hadimooru (13) naadu (villages). The fiefdom coming under Vijayanagar Empire was ruled by Chamaraja. The term Urs (Ārasu) means ruler. Such rulers, having hold over smaller regions around Hadinaadu ruled by Chamaraja, had close ties with him and his clan. Chamaraja's queen Chikkadevarasammanni had a daughter, the beautiful Devajammanni. Chamaraja had an untimely death. Taking advantage of this, Mara Naika, chieftain of neighbouring Karagahalli, attempted to conquer Hadinaadu. Instead of waging a war, Mara Naika planned to marry young Devajammanni, to gain control over her father's province. When his repeated attempts to woo the princess were resisted by her, he threatened to abduct her and marry forcibly.
