Roger Whittaker (born 22 March 1936) is an Anglo-Kenyan singer-songwriter and musician. His music can be described as easy listening. He is best known for his baritone singing voice and trademark whistling ability. American audiences are most familiar with his 1970 hit "New World in the Morning" and his 1975 hit "The Last Farewell," the latter of which is his only single to hit the Billboard Hot 100 (it made the Top 20) and also hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Childhood and beginning[link]

Whittaker's parents, Edward and Viola, were originally from Staffordshire, England, where they owned and operated a grocery shop. His father had a motorcycle accident and the family moved to a farm near Thika, Kenya because of the warmer climate. His grandfather sang in various clubs and his father played the violin. Roger learned to play the guitar.

Whittaker was drafted into national service and spent two years in the Kenya Regiment. In 1956 he was demobilized and decided on a career in medicine. He enrolled at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

He left the university after 18 months and joined the civil service education department to try teaching.

Recording and performing career[link]

To further his teaching career, Whittaker moved to Britain in September 1959. For the next three years, he studied zoology, biochemistry, and marine biology at the Bangor University and received a B.Sc. degree. He continued to sing in local clubs and released some of his songs on flexi-discs included with the campus newspaper, the Bangor University Rag. Shortly afterwards, he was signed to Fontana Records who released his first professional single, "The Charge of The Light Brigade", in 1962.

In the summer of 1962, he appeared at a professional gig in Portrush, Northern Ireland. He landed his first major breakthrough when he was signed to appear on an Ulster Television show called This And That. His second single was a cover version of "Steel Men", released in June 1962.

Whittaker met Natalie O'Brien in the spring of 1964 and they married on 15 August of that year. They have five children: Emily (b. 28 May 1968), Lauren (b. 4 June 1970), Jessica (b. 14 February 1973), Guy (b. 15 November 1974), and Alexander (b. 7 April 1978). They now have nine grandchildren.

In 1966, Whittaker switched from Fontana to EMI's Columbia label. His fourth single for the imprint was "Durham Town (The Leavin')", which in 1969 became Whittaker's first UK Top 20 hit. Whittaker's US label, RCA Victor, released the uptempo "New World In The Morning" in 1970, where it became a Top 20 hit in Billboard magazine's Easy Listening chart.

In the early 70's Whittaker took interest in the Nordic Countries when he recorded the single "Where the Angels Tread (Änglagård)" to the music of Evert Taube in 1972. In 1974 he partook in the Finnish Eurovision qualifications. The song "The Finnish Whistler" he performed in the qualifications later became famous in Finland as it was used as a title music for the popular Finnish YLE TV cooking program "Patakakkonen".

1975 saw EMI release "The Last Farewell", a track from his 1971 New World in The Morning album. It became his biggest hit and a signature song, selling more than 11 million copies worldwide. In 1979, Whittaker wrote the song "Call My Name" which reached the final of the UK Eurovision selection, A Song For Europe, performed by Eleanor Keenan and coming third. Whittaker recorded the song himself and the single charted in several European countries. Whittaker also established himself in country music with "I Love You Because" getting "into the lower reaches of the country chart"^[1] in late 1983. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Whittaker had success in Germany, with German language songs produced by Nick Munro. Unable to speak German, Whittaker sang the songs phonetically. He appeared on German and Danish TV several times,^[2] and was on the UK Top Of The Pops show 10 times in the early to mid 1970s.

In 1986, he published his autobiography, So Far, So Good, co-written with his wife.

In March 2006, Whittaker announced on his website that a 2007 Germany tour would be his last, and that he will limit future performances to "occasional concerts". Now more fluent in German, he was seen singing and was interviewed in German on Danish TV in November 2008.

In recent years he has been living in Eyrecourt, County Galway, Ireland, close to the River Shannon.

He was part of a successful British team that won the annual Knokke music festival in Belgium, and won the Press Prize as the personality of the festival.

Steven John McLaughlin (born October 2, 1971) is a former American college and professional football player who was a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL) and the Arena Football League. He played college football for the University of Arizona, earned All-American honors and won the Lou Groza Award. A third-round choice in the 1995 NFL Draft, he played for the NFL's St. Louis Rams, as well as five different Arena League teams over an 11 year career.

Early years[link]

McLaughlin was born in Tucson, Arizona.^[1] After playing soccer growing up, he attended Sahuaro High School in Tucson,^[2] and played for the Sahuaro Cougars high school football team.

College career[link]

While attending the University of Arizona, McLaughlin played for the Arizona Wildcats football team from 1990 to 1994. As a senior in 1994, he won the Lou Groza Award awarded annually to the outstanding college placekicker in America.^[3] He was also recognized as All-Pac 10 and consensus first-team All-American.^[4]

Professional career[link]

The St. Louis Rams selected McLaughlin in the third round (82nd pick overall),^[5] and he played for the Rams for a single season in 1995.^[1] He appeared in eight games, attempted 16 field goals and completed eight of them; His first official FG was a 27 yarder against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau field in the 4th Quarter. The Rams won the game 17-14 and McLaughlin was given the game ball. He also made a field goal in the final minute as the Rams went on to beat the Chicago Bears 27-24 in the first meeting that year.^[6] He was a perfect 17-of-17 on points after touchdowns.^[6] He was signed by the Atlanta Falcons in (1996) and the Baltimore Ravens in (NFL Year|1997)

McLaughlin subsequently played for 8 seasons in the AFL with 5 different Arena Football League teams: the Nashville Kats from 1998 to 2001; Buffalo Destroyers in 2002; the Georgia Force from 2003 to 2005; the Orlando Predators in 2005; and the Arizona Rattlers in 2005. He played in two Arena Bowls with the Nashville Kats and was named 2nd Team All-Arena in 2002 with the Buffalo Destroyers.

McLaughlin formed a band in college named "Pet The Fish" opening for acts such as Weezer and Dave Mathews Band. The band broke up due to his NFL and AFL career however he recently released in 2010 a solo album under the band name "Steve McLaughlin" titled "No More Record Stores." It was mixed by legendary producer Cliff Norrell at Casa Zuma Studios in Malibu, CA. One of the tracks is currently circulating on a Right Choice Ford commercial appearing in regional spots around the country.

Lisa Lampanelli (born Lisa Lampugnale; July 19, 1961)^[1] is an American stand-up comedian and insult comic. She is noted for her racy and controversial style of comedy, which frequently includes subjects such as race and homosexuality.

Early life and journalism career[link]

Lampanelli, one of three siblings, was born in Trumbull, Connecticut, to a middle class family.^[6] Three of her grandparents were of Italian descent, and the fourth of Polish ancestry.^[7][8] Her mother, Gloria, worked for the local police department where "she typed in all the arrests made", and her father, Leonard, worked for Sikorsky Aircraft and later became a painter.^[3][9][10] Lampanelli attended Roman Catholic schools,^[9] studied journalism at Boston College and Syracuse University,^[6] and went through a graduate program at Harvard.^[11] She worked as a copy editor at Popular Mechanics and an assistant at Rolling Stone.^[12] She was also a fact checker and the first chief of research for Spy magazine; a book about Spy describes her then as "your average decked-out-heavy-metal-head-next-door."^[13] Speaking later to Maxim Magazine Online, Lampanelli remarked, "I was a real journalist for Rolling Stone, Spy, Hit Parader. I interviewed those fuckin' hair bands: Cinderella, Slaughter."^[14]

Comedy[link]

Lampanelli began her stand-up career in New York in the early 1990s.^[15] In explaining her reasons for switching from journalism to comedy, Lampanelli stated not only for the pay raise, but because “I get to say the n-word word on stage and get paid money.”^[16] She made her break at the 2002 New York Friars' Club roast of Chevy Chase,^[1] and went on to participate in the roasts of Denis Leary, Pamela Anderson, Jeff Foxworthy, Flavor Flav, William Shatner, and Donald Trump and to serve as Roastmaster for Larry the Cable Guy.^[17] Lampanelli is frequently on the dais for The Howard Stern Show roasts, including appearances at the roasts for Gary Dell'Abate, Artie Lange, Andy Dick, and A&E's "Gene Simmons Roast" in April 2008.

Lampanelli released a comedy special on DVD entitled Take it Like A Man in 2005, appeared in the 2006 motion picture Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, and had a cameo appearance in the VH1 sitcom So NoTORIous. She also landed a deal with Fox for a sitcom pilot with the tentative title Big Loud Lisa, which was considered a candidate for the network's 2006–07 television season. Lampanelli taped her stand-up special Dirty Girl in the fall of 2006, which aired on Comedy Central on January 28, 2007. Her Dirty Girl CD and Dirty Girl .. No Protection DVD were released by Warner Bros./Jack Records on January 30, 2007. Lampanelli was also featured in the movie Delta Farce starring Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engvall and D.J. Qualls, which was released early in 2007, and in Drillbit Taylor starring Owen Wilson.

Her style of humor was influenced most by the Dean Martin roasts that televised when she was growing up; she didn't start watching other stand-up comedians until she became one herself.^[3][4]

Ethnic and racial minority insults and stereotypes are a predominate part of Lampanelli's comedy routine.^[16] Among some of her blatantly racist insults while doing stand-up, include: "How many ‘hispangics’ [sic] does it take to clean a bathroom? None! That’s a nigger’s job!"^[18]; “What do you call a black woman who’s had seven abortions? A crime fighter”^[16]; In addition, Gossip site TMZ reported that censors for the Comedy Central Roast of Flavor Flav cut a Lampanelli joke where she called the Flavor of Love girls in the audience "nappy headed bitches." ^[19] In addressing her racist stand-up comedy, Lampanelli stated, "I can get away with it because I'm a nice person, I have a warm personality, my intention is good behind it. The thing is, people sense when you have the least bit of anger or hate towards a group –– that's why you never make fun of people you don't like." ^[20] Though only having married Caucasian men, she makes frequent references to her "real-life relationships with black men",^[21] riffing in an interview that "my problem is, I can't get a good-looking white guy anymore, I just don't have the looks to get that. I can get hot blacks, but also blacks are now starting to get uppity and go for the skinny white ones and the Asians, which is very offensive to me that they don't stick with their roots — the chubby white girl!"^[22]

On November 21, 2008, in Santa Rosa, California, Lampanelli taped her first one-hour HBO Special at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. The special, Lisa Lampanelli: Long Live the Queen, which aired January 31, 2009, was directed by Dave Higby, who also directed her "Dirty Girl" special.^[23] In December 2010 she reunited with Higby when he directed her Tough Love special for Comedy Central that aired in the spring of 2011. She is scheduled to debut a one-woman show, Bring Back the Fat Chick, on Broadway in 2012.^[24]

The Celebrity Apprentice 5[link]

Lampanelli was a contestant on The Celebrity Apprentice 5 (also known as The Apprentice 12). She was criticized by viewers and had numerous outbursts and clashes with other contestants, including Arsenio Hall, Lou Ferrigno, and Dayana Mendoza.^[25][26] Lampanelli refused to apologize for her treatment of the contestants and racist remarks against Hispanics. Lampanelli was fired on May 6, 2012.^[27]

Lampanelli married in 1991 and divorced soon after, though she and her former spouse remained friends.^[1] She married Jimmy Cannizzaro, a former rock & roll club owner from Valley Stream, New York, on October 2, 2010 at the New York Friars' Club.^[1][29] Lampanelli is an avid supporter of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.^[30] When members of the Westboro Baptist Church planned to protest a show she held on 20 May 2011 in Topeka, Kansas she promised to donate $1000 to Gay Men's Health Crisis (The same charity she contributed to during the celebrity apprentice) for every protester that attended. After an initial count of 44 protesters she rounded the donation to an even $50,000, crediting the donation as being "made possible by the WBC."^[30]
