Geography of Hope Film Festival REFLECTIONS ON WATER
The Geography of Hope Conference celebrating “Reflections on Water” will take place in early 2011 in Point Reyes Station. The event includes literary conversations, public art installations, a film festival, and field trips to farms, wetlands, and wilderness areas in the surrounding countryside. Meals prepared with Marin’s most delicious farm products will be served at two dinners at Toby’s Feed Barn during the conference.
The Geography of Hope Conference (March 19–20) is chaired by award-winning poets Robert Hass and Brenda Hillman. It also features a host of other established and emerging writers who will participate in lively panels and more intimate lunchtime conversations with participants.
Two new and unique art exhibitions will be part of the 2011 conference. Outdoor public art projects will be installed at selected sites in Point Reyes Station. On display for three months, they will be viewed by thousands of visitors to West Marin. A group show at Toby’s Gallery will showcase the work of artists in a variety of media exploring the nature and notions of water.
Also new this year is a companion film festival (February 25–27) which precedes the conference and promises to be a fascinating and lively introduction to the subject of “Reflections on Water.” Filmmakers may submit films until December 17, 2010, to withoutabox.com.
Founded in 2008, the Geography of Hope Conference has quickly become of Northern California’s most exceptional literary and arts events. It takes its name from Wallace Stegner’s famous “Wilderness Letter” in which he described wild landscapes as part of our “geography of hope.” Located in western Marin County where many of Stegner’s land conservation visions have come to fruition, the conference explores the relationship between people and the landscape through the voices of authors, environmentalists, farmers, artists, and filmmakers.
More information about the 2011 gathering is available at www.ptreyesbooks.com and on Facebook at Geography of Hope Conference.

THE POLISH SCHOOL
The Polish School is a short documentary about a young Polish community who have made Galway, Ireland there home. Worried about the sense of dislocation inherent in being a migrant, the community responded to their distant from home by forming in 2009, a school for their children. Held every Saturday in an Irish state school, the children are taught Poland's Language, Geography and History.
Crucially, the school does more than simply provide lessons in grammar. The school has enabled this community to create a hub, a point of contact. Within this vibrant transient space, the nature of what 'home' could be is up for grabs. It is a safe space in which ones sense of identity can be nurtured and understood. Essentially, the documentary dips into the lives of teachers, parents and students garnering their thoughts and feelings about what it means to be Polish and living in Ireland. Asking, in which language do you dream?
This documentary was made with the generous support of the Galway Film Centre and Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (G.M.I.T).

The H*E*R*D Group at Watermill
Total Eclipse of the Heart, a multi-media collaboration by The H*E*R*D Group, comprised of Ireland’s Declan Rooney and South Korea’s Eunhye Hwang, will bring together various strands of the duo’s collaborative visual output in a performance at The Watermill Center on May 22. As Watermill Center’s Spring Artists-in-Residence, Rooney and Hwang have spent four weeks working at the Center with the support of the Arts Council, Ireland.
With Total Eclipse of the Heart, The H*E*R*D Group will use the Watermill Center’s architecture, geography, local community and environs as material and sites for video, live actions, installation and audio works—all to be interwoven into an interactive live performance.
Declan Rooney and Eunhye Hwang met in 2002 at the Performance Art class at the Braunschweig University of Art, Germany. While Rooney had earned his initial degree in Sculpture and Hwang in Painting, the duo began merging their diverse approaches and cultural histories into a working structure that has since achieved a clear balance of intent, with shared objectives and conceptual concerns.
Now based in Berlin, The H*E*R*D Group creates pieces primarily in alternative sites—apartments, studios, project rooms—working in mediums such as live performance, video, music production and self-published zines. The H*E*R*D Group has exhibited in locations such as Marienborg Kunst in Trondheim Norway, Hotel Ballymun in Dublin Ireland and in Mooheoga, Seoul Korea. In 2009, The Group have performed at the Villa Vaudeville in Hannover Germany and exhibited at Kunstprojects in Berlin.
