Molly Caitlyn Quinn^[1] (born October 8, 1993)^[2] is an American actress whose works have included theatre, film, and television.

Life and career[link]

Quinn is of Irish descent^[1] and was born in Texarkana, Texas.^[2][3] She began taking weekly acting lessons from retired director and producer Martin Beck after performing in her community's performance of The Nutcracker at age six. In the sixth grade, she auditioned at the Young Actors Studio where she performed for the programs' director, Linda Seto, as well as representatives from the Osbrink Talent Agency. After six months of "intensive [acting] training", Quinn signed a contract with the Osbrink agency. Subsequently, she signed with Management 360.^[4]

Stana Katic (English pronunciation: /ˈstɑːnə ˈkætɨk/;^[1] born April 26, 1978)^[2] is a Canadian film and television actress. She is best known for her portrayal of Detective Kate Beckett on ABC's Castle.

Early life[link]

Katic was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, to a Serbian^[3][4] father and Croatian^[4][5][6] mother, who both immigrated from Yugoslavia. Her father is from Vrlika, and her mother is from the surrounding area of Sinj.^[7] Katic later moved with her family to Aurora, Illinois.^[8] She spent the following years moving back and forth between Canada and the United States. After graduating from West Aurora High School in 1996, she studied acting at Chicago's Goodman School of Drama.^[8] She has four brothers and one sister.

Career[link]

Katic played the character of Hana Gitelman in Heroes, Collette Stenger in 24 's season 5, and Jenny in the film Feast of Love starring Morgan Freeman. She also played Morgenstern in Frank Miller's film The Spirit, Corrine Veneau in the Bond movie Quantum of Solace (though she was originally up for the role of Strawberry Fields in the film^[9]), and Simone Renoir in the third installment of The Librarian franchise, The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice.

In August 2008, ABC announced^[10] acquisition of the television series Castle, starring Katic as Kate Beckett and Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle.^[11]

In 2008, Katic established her own production company, Sine Timore Productions, which is Latin for "without fear."^[8]

In the summer of 2010 Katic filmed For Lovers Only with the Polish brothers in France and The Double with Richard Gere.^[12]

At the third annual Shorty Awards held on March 28, 2011, she won the actress category.^[13][14][15] In May 2011, she won the Most Glamourous Actress online ballot for the Monte-Carlo Television Festival.^[16][17] She received 17.3% of the 3,641 votes against a field of 15 finalists.^[18]

She served as a jury member at the May 29 – June 5, 2011, Film Festival Zlín, where For Lovers Only made its world premiere. She is currently working on another film, Big Sur, in which she plays Lenore Kandel.^[19] In conjunction with the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con International, there was an official announcement in Entertainment Weekly that she would become the voice for Talia al Ghul in Batman: Arkham City.^[20][21]

BuddyTV named Stana Katic as #1 on its list of "TV's 100 Sexiest Women Of 2011";^[22] named Castle as #6 on its list of "The 11 Best Returning TV Shows of 2011";^[23] and named her character's relationship with the title character as #13 (and the Best Delayed Relationship) on its list of "The Best Relationships of 2011".^[24] On January 28, 2012, she was a presenter at the 64th Annual Directors Guild of America Awards ceremony.^[25] She was the recipient of the PRISM Award for Performance in a Drama Episode at the 16th Annual PRISM Awards for her portrayal of suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the fourth season episode "Killshot" (4x09).^[26]

Stephen Powers (1840–1904) was an American journalist, ethnographer, and historian of Native American tribes in California. He traveled extensively to study and learn about their cultures, and wrote notable accounts of them. His articles were first published over a series of years in the Overland Monthly journal, but collected in The Tribes of California (1877), published by the US Geological Survey.

Early years[link]

Stephen Powers was born in Waterford, Ohio. He attended common schools and graduated from the recently established University of Michigan in 1863.

During the American Civil War years, Powers served as a Union Army correspondent for the Cincinnati Commercial newspaper.

In 1869 Powers left Ohio for the West. He walked across the Southern and Western United States to his destination of San Francisco, California. After arriving, Powers wrote about his experiences and observations, and had his book published in 1871.

California Native Americans[link]

Between 1871 and 1876, Stephen Powers traveled thousands of miles on foot and horseback through the Northern, Central Coast, and great Central Valley regions of California. Powers become very familiar with the various distinctive Native Californian Indian population groups and tribes. He studied their traditional life-ways and crafts including: spiritual and religious beliefs and ceremonies; Indigenous languages, narratives and mythology; art forms of basketry, rock art, carvings, pottery and weaving; dwellings and belongings.

He also studied their ways of interacting with the native environment of plants and animals for food, clothing, medicines, and tools. Powers observed and documented their adaptations to circumstances from a hundred years of homeland invasions by Spanish, Mexican, and European-American immigrants settling on their land; and the resulting consequences.

Stephen Powers published his diverse ethnographic studies in a series of articles, which appeared primarily in the Overland Monthly journal from 1872-1877.

Stephen Powers subsequently reworked his Tribes of California articles, notes and other material for a book's publication. It was published in 1877 as part of the federally sponsored Geographical and Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region series edited by the renowned western geologist John Wesley Powell, then Director of the Geological Survey of the Department of Interior, as well as the Bureau of Ethnological Studies at the Smithsonian Institution.

Alfred L. Kroeber, an anthropologist, director of the University of California, Berkeley's Museum of Anthropology and the dean of Native Californian ethnologists, said of Stephen Powers' book Tribes of California: "It will always remain the best introduction to the subject."^{[citation needed]}

The Very Reverend David Giuliano (born May 16, 1960), was the Moderator of the United Church of Canada from 2006 to 2009.

Giuliano grew up in Windsor, Ontario, in his words, "a descendant of deeply faithful Southern Ontario Quakers, born-again Baptists, and Italian-American immigrant Catholics."^[1] While in high school, he met his future wife Pearl at a church youth group.^[1]

Following his graduation from university, Giuliano worked for the University of Guelph as human rights commissioner, conference co-ordinator, and residence manager. In 1980, he and his wife spent four months volunteering at a vocational school in Cap Haïtien, Haiti.^[1]

Giuliano made the decision to become a minister of the United Church of Canada, and entered Queen's Theological College in Kingston, Ontario. Following his graduation in 1987, he was ordained as a minister by the London (Ontario) Conference of the United Church of Canada. He was settled at St. John's United Church in Marathon, Ontario, where he remained as minister until his election as Moderator.

During his time in Marathon, he was active in community development, and was the founding chairperson of several groups, including a regional restorative justice program, a food bank and thrift store co-operative, a school community council, and an anti-racism committee. He also co-chaired the municipal community development committee.

In 2006, he was nominated as a candidate for the post of Moderator. At the 39th General Council of the United Church at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario on August 18, 2006 (his son's 19th birthday), he was subsequently elected to succeed Peter Short as the 39th Moderator of the United Church for a three-year term. He was succeeded by Mardi Tindal in August 2009 at the 40th General Council.

During his tenure as moderator, Giuliano tried to prepare the United Church for a new vision of its mission in Canada's post-Christian society, saying that concerns about falling attendance and revenue should not stand in the way of change, for "God is getting ready to do something new and is inviting us to be part of that."^[1]

Shortly after his election as moderator, Giuliano discovered that a cancer he had fought into remission several years previously had recurred. While recovering from surgery and during other treatment, Giuliano shared his journey of faith, hope and discovery with the wider church through letters, articles and videos. In the December 2008 issue of The United Church Observer, he wrote:

If we played the [Christmas] pageant together, who would you be this year? ... This year I would be the donkey, I suppose. I would be a donkey who used to be a warrior horse. The ravages of failure, age and illness, though, have transformed me into something more humble and comical — and I say that with no disrespect toward donkeys. It feels as though maybe I am only beginning to understand what it means to carry the promised Christ on my back. Only just beginning to understand this remarkable journey, but even in my stubborn single-mindedness I have been invited to a place of honour on the journey.^[2]

In addition to the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Divinity degrees earned before his ordination, he also has a Master of Theology, a Master of Science in Adult and Experiential Learning, a certificate in Spiritual Direction, and a certificate in Expressive Arts. In 2007, he received an honourary Doctorate of Divinity from Huntington University.

He and his wife Pearl have two children, born in 1987 and 1989.

Montel Brian Anthony Williams (born July 3, 1956) is an American television personality, radio talk show host and actor. He is best known as host of the long-running The Montel Williams Show, and more recently as a spokesperson for the Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA). Williams is also active with the non-profit MS Foundation, which he founded after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999.

Early life[link]

Williams was born in Baltimore, Maryland. As a resident of Glen Burnie, Maryland, he was bused to Andover High School in neighboring Linthicum, Maryland where he was elected president of both his junior and senior classes. He was a good student, athlete and musician and active in county-wide student government issues in Annapolis, Maryland.^[1] His father, Herman Williams, Jr., was a firefighter who in 1992 became Baltimore's first African-American Fire Chief. Montel has five siblings including his 52 year old brother James.

Career[link]

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 3, 1956, Williams enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps upon graduating high school in 1974. He went to boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, where he was promoted to platoon guide. After basic training, he was sent to the Desert Warfare Training Center at Twentynine Palms, California.

While at Twentynine Palms, his superiors became impressed with his leadership skills, and he was recommended for, and accepted to, the Naval Academy Preparatory School at Newport, Rhode Island. He completed the one-year course, and was accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.

When he arrived at Annapolis on July 6, 1976, he was honorably discharged as a corporal from the Marines, and enlisted into the navy as a midshipman. While at Annapolis, Williams studied Mandarin Chinese and graduated with a degree in general engineering and a minor in International Security Affairs. It was at Annapolis that Williams first began to shave his head. Upon his graduation in 1980, he became the first black enlisted marine to complete and graduate both the Academy Prep School and Annapolis.

Williams’ plans were to return to the Marines as an officer after graduating from Annapolis. These were shattered when he and 99 other seniors were given the wrong dose of an immunization. Williams had a severe reaction, causing him to be in the hospital for 2½ weeks and lose the vision in his left eye. He eventually made a partial recovery and could serve as a naval intelligence officer, specializing in languages.

Commissioned an ensign, he spent the next one and a half years in Guam as a cryptologic officer for naval intelligence, where he served at sea and ashore. In 1982 he was transferred to Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, where he studied the Russian language for one year. In 1983 he was transferred to Ft. Meade in Maryland, where he worked with the National Security Agency. What Williams did there is vague, due to the sensitive nature of intelligence work, but he performed various intelligence missions. He was offshore aboard ship during the invasion of Grenada.

After three years aboard submarines, Williams, now a full lieutenant, was made supervising cryptologic officer with the Naval Security Fleet Support Division at Ft. Meade. It was while counseling his crew that he discovered a gift for public speaking. In 1988, he began conducting informal counseling for the wives and families of the servicemen in his command. He was later asked to speak to a local group of kids in Kansas City, MO about the importance of leadership and how to overcome obstacles on the road to success—thus beginning a three-year career in motivational speaking.

Williams traveled the country talking to more than three million teenagers nationwide and gave up his naval commission to pursue speaking full-time. He left the navy with the rank of lieutenant, and received the Navy Achievement Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal. Williams retired after 22 years of service as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy Reserve.^[2] In addition, he reached out to thousands of parents, educators and business leaders, encouraging them to work together to address youth issues, trends and to inspire youngsters to reach their highest potential. These efforts to reach out to the community eventually lead to the Montel Williams Show on television

Williams began The Montel Williams Show (syndicated by CBS Paramount Television) in 1991.^[3] In 1996, Williams received a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host. Ratings for the show peaked during the 1996–1997 season, with 4.4 average rating. He was again nominated for Outstanding Talk Show Host in 2002, and the Montel Williams Show was nominated for Outstanding Talk Show in 2001 and 2002.

On January 30, 2008, Variety reported that CBS TV Distribution terminated The Montel Williams Show when key Fox-owned stations chose not to renew it for the 2008–09 season.^[4] On May 16, 2008 the last episode of The Montel Williams Show aired.^[5]

On November 10, 2010, Oprah Winfrey invited Williams, along with former talk show hosts Phil Donahue, Geraldo Rivera, Ricki Lake and Sally Jessy Raphael as guests on her show. This was the first time that she had fellow talkers appear together since their programs left the air.^[6]

Radio, infomercial, & news shows[link]

On April 6, 2009, Williams began hosting a daily radio show, Montel Across America, on Air America Media.^[7] On January 21, 2010, Air America ceased broadcasting, leaving Williams without a radio outlet.^[8]

As of May 2009, he started hosting an infomercial for the Living Well Healthmaster, a blender product. It is presented under the title Living Well with Montel; the infomercial is structured similarly to his old talk show, featuring guests talking about their health problems, with the Healthmaster mixer being the solution. In November 2009, Williams began appearing in television commercials endorsing Money Mutual, an online payday advance lender.^[9][10] Later episodes of Living Well with Montel advertised a home pressure cooker and an identity theft protection service.

In June 2010, Williams began doing infomercials for LifeLock, a security fraud company.^[11]

During May 24–27, 2011, Williams became a guest host news anchor on the comedic local Sacramento, California news station Good Day Sacramento. Where he would answer questions by viewers and also on his first day, he got dressed up as Paul Stanley.

Acting[link]

Williams has also guest-starred in episodic television and off-Broadway plays. Among other roles, he portrayed a Navy SEAL lieutenant in three episodes of the television series JAG. He also produced and starred in a short-lived television series called Matt Waters, which appeared on CBS in 1996. He played an ex-Navy SEAL turned inner-city high school teacher.^[12] In 1997, he played Lt. Colonel Northrop a Nuclear Silo commander in the fictional movie The Peacekeeper.

Williams played the judge presiding over Erica Kane's (Susan Lucci) murder trial on the ABC soap opera All My Children in 2002. In 2003, he made a guest appearance on the soap as himself, to promote an episode of his own show on which several AMC stars were scheduled to appear. In 2004, he hosted American Candidate, a political reality show on Showtime. Williams has also guest starred on Touched by an Angel and Guiding Light.

Williams produced and narrated the Starline Films documentary film 4CHOSEN: The Documentary, which tells the story about the New Jersey Turnpike shooting in 1998, and the racial profiling case that followed the incident.^[13][14]

Spokesperson[link]

Williams is a national spokesman of the Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA), a patient-assistance program clearinghouse that helps low-income patients apply for free or reduced-priced prescription drugs. On November 30, 2007, while in Savannah, Georgia to promote PPA, he threatened reporters following an earlier interview at which Courtney Scott, a 17-year-old high school intern reporter for the Savannah Morning News, had asked him a question about whether restriction of pharmaceutical profits would discourage research and development of new drugs. Angered by the question, Williams subsequently terminated that videotaped interview; Williams later ran into Scott in his hotel and threatened to "blow [her] up".^[15] Williams' public relations representatives later apologized for his hostile outburst in an issued statement, "I mistakenly thought the reporter and photographer in question were at the hotel to confront me about some earlier comments. I was wrong, and I apologize for my overreaction." ^[16] In 2010, Williams became chief spokesperson for the Poker Training Network,^[17], now Card Geniuses, a MLM-based poker instruction and playing website.

In the episode of South Park entitled the Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka, Jesus is repeatedly mistaken for Williams by an enthusiastic Michael Jackson apologist whilst taping his public access talk show Jesus and Pals. ^[18]

Personal life[link]

Williams has two daughters, Ashley Williams (b. 1984) and Maressa Williams (b. 1988), with his first wife, Rochele See. Williams married Grace Morley, a burlesque dancer on June 6, 1992.^[19] They have a son, Montel Brian Hank Williams (b. 1993), and a daughter, Wyntergrace Williams (b. 1994). The couple divorced in 2000. In July 2006, Williams proposed to girlfriend Tara Fowler, an American Airlines flight attendant. They married before friends and family on a beach in Bermuda on October 6, 2007.^[20] He is also featured in Making Music Magazine.

Williams participated in the 2007 World Series of Poker main event,^[21] and planned to donate any potential winnings to US families affected by the Iraq war. He was eliminated in Day 2. During the event Williams also spoke out about the port security bill signed in 2006 that banned on-line gaming sites from accepting money transactions from the U.S.

Williams was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999.^[22][23] In the following year, Williams created the MS Foundation, a non-profit organization with a focus on research and education.^[24] Williams has openly stated that he uses medical marijuana, stating it helps to ease his Multiple Sclerosis-caused neuropathic pain.^[25] Williams has become a vocal advocate of marijuana, supporting efforts to pass medical marijuana laws in states, as well as calling for full legalization and promoting the use of the gravity bong.^[26][27] He has also said that snowboarding is his "best therapy" for MS, commenting that “When I stand up I need first to hold on to something and think about the positioning of my legs. If I were to just start walking I would fall. I have to get my brain to find my legs and then I will usually take a test step, but I say something at the time to anyone who might be watching to distract from what I’m really doing. Then I’ll find places to grab as I walk and talk, sometimes even walking backwards because I have more control that way. People have no idea that I’m doing this. But when I’m snowboarding and my feet are strapped in, my brain seems to have a direct connection to my legs. After snowboarding it’s night and day for my balance and walking. There’s a real physical change before I get up to the mountain and when I come down. The benefits last for days.”^[28]

Williams recently added The Fisher House Foundation to the charities he supports. While visiting wounded military at Walter Reed for 2 years, he learned of this foundation's work which is to make free housing available so the families of wounded soldiers can be near their hospitals . He has since become a board member and he and his extended family enjoy cooking special seafood dinners for the guests at individual Fisher Houses.
