Building an ice skating rink can be simple and inexpensive, and only requires a few items (a white tarp, PVC pipe, and duct tape). Watch me show how it's made.
What you'll need:
1 White tarp. We used this one from Amazon.com which is 20' x 30'. http://amzn.to/1SB3CEo
10 ten foot lengths of 4" PVC pipe (for a 20' x 30' rink).
4 PVC elbows, 4".
1 roll of white duct tape also from Amazon. http://amzn.to/1OPrwX5
Flat ground.
Cold weather.
Instructions:
1. Connect the PVC pipe to make a 20' x 30' perimeter. You'll need to trim a couple of feet off each side since the tarp needs to overhang the PVC perimeter.
2. Duct tape ALL the PVC joints.
3. Spread the tarp over the PVC pipe.
4. Tape the tarp to the pipe in lots of places.
5. Start filling with water. Keep leaves and other debris out of the water.
6. Adjust the height of the walls as you see the water filling since the ground is probably not perfectly flat. Place something like extra PVC pipe under the perimeter to raise it up where needed. Keep an eye on this as the water fills.
7. Wait for a couple of very cold days for the water to freeze.
8. Enjoy!
For an extra special rink, place LED Christmas lights under the tarp. Make sure to plug the lights into a GFCI outlet!

An ice rink (or ice skating rink) is a frozen body of water and/or hardened chemicals where people can ice skate or play winter sports. Besides recreational ice skating, some of its uses include ice hockey, figure skating and curling as well as exhibitions, contests and ice shows. There are two types of rinks in prevalent use today: natural, where freezing occurs from cold ambient temperatures, and artificial (or mechanically-frozen), where a coolant produces cold temperatures in the surface below the water, causing the water to freeze. There are also synthetic ice rinks where skating surfaces are made out of plastics.
Rink, a Scottish word meaning 'course', was used as the name of a place where curling was played. The name has been retained for the construction of ice areas for other sports and uses.
Many ice rinks consist of, or are found on, open bodies of water such as lakes, ponds, canals, and sometimes rivers; these can only be used in the winter in climates where the surface would freeze thickly enough to support human weight. Rinks can also be made in cold climates by enclosing a level area of ground, filling it with water, and letting it freeze. Snow may even be packed to use as a containment material.

Ice skating is moving on ice by using ice skates. It can be done for a variety of reasons, including health benefits, leisure, traveling, and various sports. Ice skating occurs both on specially prepared indoor and outdoor tracks, as well as on naturally occurring bodies of frozen water, such as lakes and rivers.

Originally, skates were merely sharpened, flattened bone strapped to the bottom of the foot. Skaters did not actually skate on the ice, but rather glided on top of it. True skating emerged when a steel blade with sharpened edges was used. Skates now cut into the ice instead of gliding on top of it. Adding edges to ice skates was invented by the Dutch in the 13th or 14th century. These ice skates were made of steel, with sharpened edges on the bottom to aid movement. The construction of modern ice skates has stayed largely the same since then.

A Very Easy to Build Ice Skating Rink
Building an ice skating rink can be simple and inexpensive, and only requires a few items (a white tarp, PVC pipe, and duct tape). Watch me show how it's made. What you'll need: 1 White tarp. We used this one from Amazon.com which is 20' x 30'. http://amzn.to/1SB3CEo 10 ten foot lengths of 4" PVC pipe (for a 20' x 30' rink). 4 PVC elbows, 4". 1 roll of white duct tape also from Amazon. http://amzn.to/1OPrwX5 Flat ground. Cold weather. Instructions: 1. Connect the PVC pipe to make a 20' x 30' perimeter. You'll need to trim a couple of feet off each side since the tarp needs to overhang the PVC perimeter. 2. Instructions:

4. Tape the tarp to the pipe in lots of places.

Bryant Park's ice skating rink sets itself apart from all others in New York City because it is free! Of course, that only applies if you bring your own skates, but even with the cost of skate rentals it's one of New York City's most affordable ice skating options.
Bryant Park is a 9.603-acre (38,860 m2) privately managed public park located in the New York City borough of Manhattan. It is located between Fifth and Sixth Avenues and between 40th and 42nd Streets in Midtown Manhattan. Although technically the Main Branch of the New York Public Library is located within the park, effectively it forms the park's functional eastern boundary, making Sixth Avenue the park's primary entrance. Bryant Park is located entirely over an underground structure that houses the library's archives, which were built in the 1980s when the park was closed to the public and excavated; the new library facilities were built below ground level while the park was restored above it.
Even though it is part of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Bryant Park is managed by the private not-for-profit corporation Bryant Park Corporation.

We went to Enjoy an evening at Eyeskate, a spin on the London Eye's very own ice rink at frostival in the heart of the South Bank of the river Thames.
The Ice skating rink will be opening daily from the 15th November 2014 until the 4th January 2015 - times from 10am to 9pm daily below the London Eye.
