William Burges (born in London, 1827) designed this washstand in 1880. He designed it for his guest bedroom and the washstand reflects Burges's characteristic mix of scholarly sources and playful humour.
The washstand design is based on the poem 'Vita Nove' (New Life), by the Italian poet Dante (1265-1321). The motifs suggest a garden full of new life.
His design features a carved, painted and gilded wood, alongside a marble top and bowl inset with silver; and also a bronze tap with fillings.

Castell Coch is a late nineteenth-century 'fairytale'-style castle, whch was built on medieval remains. Castell Coch was designed for the third marquess of Bute by William Burges. The interior is lavishly decorated and furnished in the Victorian Gothic style; a Romantic vision of what a castle in the Middle Ages would have looked.

A look around Cardiff Castle which is situated in the heart of the city of Cardiff, the capital of Wales.
The castle sits on a Roman fortress dating back to AD50, the Normans then occupied the site. The original twelve sided Norman keep can be reached top the 50 steps.
The castle apartments are a Victorian Gothic fantasy palace, created by William Burges for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, one of the world’s richest men.
Having a look around the ornate themed rooms, the Arab room, the Banqueting room and the library.
After being dragged around Welsh castles over the summer Mrs W decided to take a trip in Cardiff City centre for a bit of shopping. (Cardiff has an excellent shopping centre and really interesting Victorian Arcades with lots of independent shops).
At the time of our visit, the entry prices for Cardiff Castle were £12 for adults and £9 for kids. There is also a tour of the ornate apartments and the work of William Burges which is an additional £3.
If you are visiting the UK, Cardiff is definitely worth a visit and it’s only 2 hours from London.

Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral, (Irish: Ardeaglais Naomh Fionnbarra) is a cathedral of the Church of Ireland in Cork city, Ireland. It is in the ecclesiastical province of Dublin. Begun in 1863, the cathedral was the first major work of the Victorian architect William Burges. Previously the cathedral of the Diocese of Cork, it is now one of three cathedrals in the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross.
History and architecture[edit]
The current cathedral is built on the site of at least two previous structures dedicated to Finbarr of Cork.The first dated from the 7th century, with works continuing through the 12th century.This building was damaged during the Siege of Cork (1690), and a new structure was built in 1735 - though elements of the earlier spire were retained.
This structure remained until the 1860s, when a competition for the building of a new larger cathedral was held 1862. In February 1863, the designs of the architect William Burges was declared the winner of the competition to build a new cathedral of St Fin Barre.His diary records his reaction - "Got Cork!" - whilst the cathedral accounts record the payment of the winning prize sum of £100.Building work took seven years before the first service was held in the cathedral in 1870. Building, carving and decoration continued into the 20th century, long after Burges's death in 1881.
The style of the building is Early French, Burges's favoured period and a style he continued to favour throughout his life, choosing it for his own home, The Tower House, in Kensington. The stipulated price for construction was to be £15,000,a sum vastly exceeded. The total cost came to significantly over £100,000.[9] Burges was "unconcerned" (his own words) in his letter of January 1877 to the Bishop of Cork: "(In the future) the whole affair will be on its trial and, the elements of time and cost being forgotten, the result only will be looked at. The great questions will then be, first, is this work beautiful and, secondly, have those to whom it was entrusted, done it with all their heart and all their ability."
Burges oversaw all aspects of the design, including the architecture of the building, the statuary, the stained glass and the internal decoration. The result is "undoubtedly Burges's greatest work in ecclesiastical architecture"

William Burges
William Burges (/ˈbərdʒɛs/; 2 December 1827 – 20 April 1881) was an English architect and designer. Among the greatest of the Victorian art-architects, he sought in his work to escape from both nineteenth-century industrialisation and the Neoclassical architectural style and re-establish the architectural and social values of a utopian medieval England. Burges stands within the tradition of the Gothic Revival, his works echoing those of the Pre-Raphaelites and heralding those of the Arts and Crafts movement.
Burges's career was short but illustrious; he won his first major commission for Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral in Cork in 1863, when he was 35, and he died, in 1881, at his Kensington home, The Tower House, aged only 53. His architectural output was small but varied. Working with a long-standing team of craftsmen, he built churches, a cathedral, a warehouse, a university, a school, houses and castles. Burges's most notable works are Cardiff Castle, constructed between 1866 and 1928, and Castell Coch (1872–91), both of which were built for John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute. Other significant buildings include Gayhurst House, Buckinghamshire (1858–65), Knightshayes Court (1867–74), the Church of Christ the Consoler (1870–76), St Mary's, Studley Royal (1870–78) in Yorkshire, and Park House, Cardiff (1871–80).

Castell Coch
Castell Coch (Welsh pronunciation: [ˈkastɛɬ koːχ]; Welsh for Red Castle) is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built above the village of Tongwynlais in South Wales. The first castle on the site was built by the Normans after 1081, to protect the newly conquered town of Cardiff and control the route along the Taff Gorge. Abandoned shortly afterwards, the castle's earth motte was reused by Gilbert de Clare as the basis for a new stone fortification, which he built between 1267 and 1277 to control his freshly annexed Welsh lands. This castle was likely destroyed in the native Welsh rebellion of 1314. In 1760, the castle ruins were acquired by John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute as part of a marriage settlement that brought the family vast estates in South Wales.
John Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, inherited the castle in 1848. One of Britain's wealthiest men, with interests in architecture and antiquarian studies, he employed the architect William Burges to reconstruct the castle, "as a country residence for occasional occupation in the summer", using the medieval remains as a basis for the design. Burges rebuilt the outside of the castle between 1875 and 1879, before turning to the interior; he died in 1881 and the work was finished by Burges's remaining team in 1891. Bute reintroduced commercial viticulture into Britain, planting a vineyard just below the castle, and wine production continued until the First World War. The Marquess made little use of his new retreat and in 1950 his grandson, the 5th Marquess of Bute, placed it into the care of the state. It is now controlled by the Welsh heritage agency Cadw.

Cardiff Castle
Cardiff Castle (Welsh: Castell Caerdydd) is a medieval castle and Victorian Gothic revival mansion located in the city centre of Cardiff, Wales. The original motte and bailey castle was built in the late 11th century by Norman invaders on top of a 3rd-century Roman fort. The castle was commissioned by either William the Conqueror or by Robert Fitzhamon, and formed the heart of the medieval town of Cardiff and the Marcher Lord territory of Glamorgan. In the 12th century the castle began to be rebuilt in stone, probably by Robert of Gloucester, with a shell keep and substantial defensive walls being erected. Further work was conducted by Richard de Clare, 6th Earl of Gloucester in the second half of the 13th century. Cardiff Castle was repeatedly involved in the conflicts between the Anglo-Normans and the Welsh, being attacked several times in the 12th century, and stormed in 1404 during the revolt of Owain Glyndŵr.

William Burges's washstand
William Burges (born in London, 1827) designed this washstand in 1880. He designed it for his guest bedroom and the washstand reflects Burges's characteristic mix of scholarly sources and playful humour. The washstand design is based on the poem 'Vita Nove' (New Life), by the Italian poet Dante (1265-1321). The motifs suggest a garden full of new life. His design features a carved, painted and gilded wood, alongside a marble top and bowl inset with silver; and also a bronze tap with fillings.

Resting on ancient foundations, Castell Coch is relatively modern as it was built for the third marquess of Bute who wanted a rural retreat from his home in Cardiff Castle. A look around Cardiff Castle which is situated in the heart of the city of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. The castle sits on a Roman fortress dating back to AD50, the Normans then occupied the site. The original twelve sided Norman keep can be reached top the 50 steps. The castle apartments are a Victorian Gothic fantasy palace, created by William Burges for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, one of the world’s richest men. Having a look around the ornate themed rooms, the Arab room, the Banqueting room and the library. After being dragged around Welsh castles over the summer Mrs W decided to take a trip in Cardiff City centre for a bit of shopping. The middle ages fascinated the Victorians, as much as the Victorians fascinate us today. High Gothic was the Order of the Day. The "Eccentric Genius" William Burges was given free rein by his patron, John Patrick Crichton-Stuart 3rd Marquess of Bute, to create a rural retreat to complement the opulence of his main residence, Cardiff Castle.

Begun in 1863, the cathedral was the first major work of the Victorian architect William Burges. Previously the cathedral of the Diocese of Cork, it is now one of three cathedrals in the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross.

The current cathedral is built on the site of at least two previous structures dedicated to Finbarr of Cork.The first dated from the 7th century, with works continuing through the 12th century.This building was damaged during the Siege of Cork (1690), and a new structure was built in 1735 - though elements of the earlier spire were retained.
This structure remained until the 1860s, when a competition for the building of a new larger cathedral was held 1862. In February 1863, the designs of the architect William Burges was declared the winner of the competition to build a new cathedral of St Fin Barre.His diary records his reaction - "Got Cork!" - whilst the cathedral accounts record the payment of the winning prize sum of £100.Building work took seven years before the first service was held in the cathedral in 1870. Building, carving and decoration continued into the 20th century, long after Burges's death in 1881.
The style of the building is Early French, Burges's favoured period and a style he continued to favour throughout his life, choosing it for his own home, The Tower House, in Kensington. The stipulated price for construction was to be £15,000,a sum vastly exceeded. The total cost came to significantly over £100,000.[9] Burges was "unconcerned" (his own words) in his letter of January 1877 to the Bishop of Cork: "(In the future) the whole affair will be on its trial and, the elements of time and cost being forgotten, the result only will be looked at. The great questions will then be, first, is this work beautiful and, secondly, have those to whom it was entrusted, done it with all their heart and all their ability."
Burges oversaw all aspects of the design, including the architecture of the building, the statuary, the stained glass and the internal decoration. The result is "undoubtedly Burges's greatest work in ecclesiastical architecture"

Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

William Burges (born in London, 1827) designed this washstand in 1880. He designed it for his guest bedroom and the washstand reflects Burges's characteristic mix of scholarly sources and playful humour. The washstand design is based on the poem 'Vita Nove' (New Life), by the Italian poet Dante (1265-1321). The motifs suggest a garden full of new life. His design features a carved, painted and gilded wood, alongside a marble top and bowl inset with silver; and also a bronze tap with fillings.

A Day Out At Cardiff Castle, Wales
A look around Cardiff Castle which is situated in the heart of the city of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. The castle sits on a Roman fortress dating back to AD50, the Normans then occupied the site. The original twelve sided Norman keep can be reached top the 50 steps. The castle apartments are a Victorian Gothic fantasy palace, created by William Burges for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, one of the world’s richest men. Having a look around the ornate themed rooms, the Arab room, the Banqueting room and the library. After being dragged around Welsh castles over the summer Mrs W decided to take a trip in Cardiff City centre for a bit of shopping. After being dragged around Welsh castles over the summer Mrs W decided to take a trip in Cardiff City centre for a bit of shopping. (Cardiff has an excellent shopping centre and really interesting Victorian Arcades with lots of independent shops).
At the time of our visit, the entry prices for Cardiff Castle were £12 for adults and £9 for kids. There is also a tour of the ornate apartments and the work of William Burges which is an additional £3.
If you are visiting the UK, Cardiff is definitely worth a visit and it’s only 2 hours from London.

A look around Cardiff Castle which is situated in the heart of the city of Cardiff, the capital of Wales.
The castle sits on a Roman fortress dating back to AD50, the Normans then occupied the site. The original twelve sided Norman keep can be reached top the 50 steps.
The castle apartments are a Victorian Gothic fantasy palace, created by William Burges for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, one of the world’s richest men.
Having a look around the ornate themed rooms, the Arab room, the Banqueting room and the library.

Begun in 1863, the cathedral was the first major work of the Victorian architect William Burges. Previously the cathedral of the Diocese of Cork, it is now one of three cathedrals in the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross.
History and architecture[edit]
The current cathedral is built on the site of at least two previous structures dedicated to Finbarr of Cork.The first dated from the 7th century, with works continuing through the 12th century.This building was damaged during the Siege of Cork (1690), and a new structure was built in 1735 - though elements of the earlier spire were retained.
This structure remained until the 1860s, when a competition for the building of a new larger cathedral was held 1862. In February 1863, the designs of the architect William Burges was declared the winner of the competition to build a new cathedral of St Fin Barre.His diary records his reaction - "Got Cork!" - whilst the cathedral accounts record the payment of the winning prize sum of £100.Building work took seven years before the first service was held in the cathedral in 1870. Building, carving and decoration continued into the 20th century, long after Burges's death in 1881.
The style of the building is Early French, Burges's favoured period and a style he continued to favour throughout his life, choosing it for his own home, The Tower House, in Kensington. The stipulated price for construction was to be £15,000,a sum vastly exceeded. The total cost came to significantly over £100,000.[9] Burges was "unconcerned" (his own words) in his letter of January 1877 to the Bishop of Cork: "(In the future) the whole affair will be on its trial and, the elements of time and cost being forgotten, the result only will be looked at. The great questions will then be, first, is this work beautiful and, secondly, have those to whom it was entrusted, done it with all their heart and all their ability."
Burges oversaw all aspects of the design, including the architecture of the building, the statuary, the stained glass and the internal decoration. The result is "undoubtedly Burges's greatest work in ecclesiastical architecture"
