BBC One NI analogue TV & Ceefax shutdown, 23rd October 2012
That is it! The moment Ceefax went off the air for good, not just in Northern Ireland but also the UK and as a service of it's own. The BBC One NI analogue shutdown took place just after "The Magic Box" programme (a programme jointly produced by the BBC and UTV) had finished with the plug pulled at 11:32:19PM BST on the 23rd October 2012. Unlike the BBC Two closedown, the "Ceefax is temporarily off air" caption didn't appear other than the "SEE P100" part where the clock is normally located. RIP Ceefax. If you want to skip to where the plug is pulled, it is at 3:47 in this video. Reception is from the Brougher Mountain transmission station on channel E22. This frequency will now be used for the D3&4 multiplex which will carry DVB-T SD services including UTV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

Pages From Ceefax (featuring Bart), 21/10/12, BBC Two
The first 30 minutes of the penultimate PFC, headed up by the classic Bart (which gets faded out prematurely) and featuring a special one-off compilation of Ceefax tunes. At around 4am, the Ceefax generator regained its marbles and Wednesday 17th October's pages were replaced with up-to-date content. There's life in the old girl yet! Track listing is as follows (thanks to ceefaxfreak09 for the info) 0:37 - Bart 6:05 - Nature's Shadow Lounge 9:00 - Autumn Chill 11:10 - Heaven Makes You Happy (1987) 13:40 - Stretching (1989) 16:12 - Slide Rule (1993) 19:07 - Fast Driver (from Twilight Break, 1990) 21:50 - Summer High (1994) 25:05 - Wild Wind (1997) 29:15 - Secret Crystal (1999) [partial]

Pages from Ceefax | BBC2 27/03/1980 (rare)
Captured by Ian Wegg. From 1980 and what is probably the earliest Ceefax footage on YouTube, some pages from the BBC's teletext service back in the 'glory years'. Includes Weather updates, travel, football, newsreel and a putthetellyon endcap special (which I'm quite proud of despite probably having too much time on my hands!). First backing music is a version of Midnight Cowboy. Ceefax ends for good in the early hours of 22nd October 2012 on BBC2. ALL COPYRIGHTS BBC TELEVISION

The last few seconds of the last ever Ceefax testcard.
Transmitted on BBC Two on 22/10/2012. This was almost two weeks after the last BBC Two analogue signals ended. Note: The BBC Two testcard is displaying CEEFAX 1 and not CEEFAX 2 on the top line. The page number 152 was also in red and not white. The red 152 is replaced with 010 then 005, 003 and 001 as a countdown. The only place you can view Ceefax is now in Northern Ireland on BBC One analogue until it ends on 24/10/2012. Up to 5:20:37am displayed CEEFAX 2 (BBC2 Ceefax) From 5:20:37am displayed CEEFAX 1 (BBC1 Ceefax on BBC Two) Up to 5:47am 152 displayed, then: 5:47am = 010 5:52am = 005 5:54am = 003 5:56am = 001 5:57am = Ceefax replaced by a caption. 5:59am = BBC Two logo and announcement. BBC Two NI analogue TV & Ceefax shutdown, 10th October 2012
BBC Two Northern Ireland switched off their analogue transmissions for the final time on 12:23:48am BST on the 10th October 2012. This is stage one of the Digital Switch Over in NI, stage two will take place on the 24th October 2012. As Northern Ireland is the last region in the UK to switch off its analogue TV transmissions, this is a video showing a simultaneous teletext & picture display showing the last few seconds not only of BBC Two analogue 625-line PAL I broadcasts, but also the Ceefax service on BBC Two. Unfortunately it won't resume shortly on BBC Two. Edit: It appears that the vintage "Ceefax Off Air" caption is generated locally at the transmitter site when the data feed is lost, and not at it's path towards the transmitter eg at Broadcast House in Belfast or at Divis, which explains that when the Ceefax feed was lost, the off-air page burst into action. The actual shut down of the transmitter was 40 seconds after the off-air page went up. If you want to watch a full screen shut down video recorded from the analogue transmission, you can see it here - www.youtube.com Source of the transmission is from Brougher Mountain, channel E28 - it was also shut down from the Strabane relay site at the exact same time on E45. On both these frequencies at each site the new BBC A multiplexes are up and running.

Analogue Teletext (Ceefax)
Just before the analogue switched off (from bluebell hill) I was surprised to find that teletext on BBC 1 was still being transmitted. Teletext is a very weird information service invented in the 70s. It is transmitted though the TV picture. The analogue signal is designed to be fed directly into a CRT (with no processing required by the TV). In-between TV frames there is some time while no picture is transmitted. This is where the teletext is transmitted. (there can be up to 25 lines of teletext transmitted on each frame). Some TVs display the teletext lines by mistake, When this happens you can see a flickery effect at the top of the TV picture. Teletext works by each pixel on the line being either white or black (White is 1 and black is 0). There are 360 pixels per teletext line. (analogue doesn't actually have pixels because it is a waveform. There is normally 720 pixels across, but teletext only has 360 pixels, so the waveform is less dense and will have less error) The 360 pixels (which act as bits) are thought off as 45 bytes. (each byte is 8 bits) The first 3 bytes (or 24 bits) are a set pattern to tell the TV that the line is a teletext line (and also tells the TV the pixels positions in the waveform creating the line) The first 3 bytes (or 24 bits) are 101010101010101011100100 This leaves 42 bytes for teletext. The teletext on one TV channel is divided into 8 different sections called magazines, each work independently. (pages 100-199 is magazine 1, pages 200 ...

Ceefax says "go0%8¥e" (goodbye) - a final goodbye (part seven)
P@rt $ev€n of te f1n@L %@ge$ fr0m €eef@x. (Part seven of the final pages from Ceefax) Now it's time to say goodbye to Ceefax, as this video contains the end of Pages from Ceefax and then the end of Ceefax itself, courtesy of lawhec's filming techniques. P007 BBC_CEEFAX A BRIEF HISTORY OF CEEFAX 1/5 Ceefax was the world's first teletext information system. It was invented in 1972 after BBC engineers were looking up how previously unused parts of the analogue signals - called the field and vertical blanking intervals - could be used to transmit subtitled soundtracks for the deaf. In the event though, they discovered that there was enough room to transmit many pages of information, such as news, sports, weather, traffic information, TV listings etc as well as just subtitles. They decided to take the opportunity to launch the world's first full information-on-demand sytem, on 23rd September 1974. The service was to be called "Ceefax" ie "see facts". Since then several hundred other boradcasters in both the UK and around the world have launched their own versions of teletext, however the mother of teletext will always remain Ceefax. P007 BBC_CEEFAX A BRIEF HISTORY OF CEEFAX 2/5 Initially Ceefax remained the territory of computer geeks and the deaf, so the spread of teletext into people's homes was a slow trickle at first. However, it was in March 1980 when the BBC decided to fill up gaps in their daytime schedule that a programme, Pages from Ceefax, was launched. The service ...

One last evening with Ceefax
With the Northern Irish Digital Switch Over about to take place in a couple of hours, this off-screen capture shows the animation on page 100 that the staff at Ceefax put together along with a last glance at the main news headlines as well as local news & sport. The BBC Red Button service isn't a bad service, in some ways it's an improvement with the better graphics available, for say weather forecasts, but the World System Teletext that Ceefax gave birth to is still a great and straight to the point technology especially as modern televisions these days cache teletext pages so if you're on a channel for more than a few minutes displaying a page is pretty much instant. A shame that the UK D-Book spec made no room for WST unlike in other countries including the Republic of Ireland. Ceefax is dead. Long live Ceefax.
