Robert Miles (born Roberto Concina, November 3, 1969) is a Swiss-born Italian record producer, composer, musician and DJ in electronica and alternative music.^[1]

Biography[link]

Robert Miles was born to Italian immigrants Antonietta Lauro and Albino Concina in Fleurier, Switzerland.

Miles became proficient at playing the piano during his youth in Friuli, Italy, in the small town of Fagagna, where his family moved when he was still a young boy, and has been in the music scene since 1984. He worked as a DJ in some Italian clubs and private radio networks and in 1990, he used his savings to establish his own recording studio and a pirate radio station.

In 1994, Miles wrote a house/chill-out piece based on acoustic guitar chords and soft synthesizer effects, "Children", which was later developed into a dream trance track featuring a piano theme on top. The single picked up sales slowly, but within two weeks of its official release in 1995, it had sold more than 350,000 copies all over Europe and topped the charts in many countries. After occupying the Euro Top 100 chart number 1 spot for thirteen consecutive weeks,^[2] by 1997, "Children" had sold more than 5 million copies worldwide. It earned Miles platinum records^[3][4] in many countries, a Brit Award (Robert Miles is, to date, the only Italian artist who has received the award) as Best International Male Newcomer 1997,^[5] a World Music Award as World's Best Selling Male Newcomer and various other awards.

Miles' next single was "Fable". Part of this song was used in the theatrical trailer for the U.S. movie Ever After^[6] starring Drew Barrymore and Dougray Scott. His debut album Dreamland was released on June 7, 1996 in Europe, and released in the United States about a month later, with a new track, "One and One". This new track became very popular (it reached number 1 in the Euro Top 100 Singles Chart during the Christmas period and remained in the top spot for six consecutive weeks)^[7] and was later released as a single in Europe and the U.S.

In November 1997, Miles released another track, "Freedom", which was one of the key tracks on his second album 23am featuring vocals provided by Kathy Sledge of Sister Sledge. Containing a different feel from the previously more club-oriented Dreamland, 23am incorporated more lyrics-driven songs than its predecessor while maintaining Miles' trademark piano sound from the first album.

After splitting from BMG/Deconstruction and his former management in London, he set up his own independent record label S:alt Records (with S:alt being short for suitably:alternative) in 2001 and released his third album, Organik,^[8] featuring the new single "Paths" with vocals provided by Nina Miranda of Smoke City. Guests on the album included Trilok Gurtu, Bill Laswell and Nitin Sawhney. Music from Organik was used on various movie soundtracks such as The Bourne Identity, Derrida, and City of Ghosts. In 2002, an album containing mainly remixes of songs found on Organik was released. The album, appropriately entitled Organik Remixes,^[9] contained remixes by the winners of the remixing contest held on Robert Miles' website, as well as remixes from well known artists such as The Future Sound of London, Riton, and Alexkid amongst others. The album also had one new track, "Bhairav", which featured the vocals of Amelia Cuni.

In 2004, Miles released Miles_Gurtu,^[10] his fourth album which was a collaboration with percussionist Trilok Gurtu and included jazz and electronica elements. Also guesting on the album were Nitin Sawhney, Jon Thorne, Mike Patto and Paul Falloon.

His fifth album entitled Th1rt3en^[11] was released worldwide on S:alt Records in February 2011, and featured guests such as Robert Fripp, Dave Okumu, Jon Thorne, Mike Patto and Davide Giovannini. For this album, Miles produced a blend of alternative and progressive rock with ambient and electronic soundscapes.

Miles is currently working on a soundtrack for the forthcoming movie documentary The Turn of This Century, directed by Peter Beyak and featuring the photography of Life Magazine.

Nil Karaibrahimgil (born 17 October 1976 in Ankara, Turkey), also popularly known simply as Nil (Turkish for the Nile), is a well known Turkish singer and songwriter mostly noted for her distinct lyrics. Nil's passion and admiration for music stems from her father; Suavi Karaibrahimgil, who is also a musician although he is not currently active in the Turkish music industry.

In 2000, she graduated from Boğaziçi University with a degree in International Relations. She also further received the Crystal Apple prize award twice, which recognized her achievements in advertising. Besides academic success, Nil has found fortune in the Turkish music scene. Many of her songs deal with love, marriage and relationships. On January 21, 2010 she married Sertab Erener's brother Serdar Erener near the shore of the Nile River.^[1]

Up to 2007, Nil has managed to release 3 successful albums along with several singles of her own here and there. In 2002, her debuting album titled, "Nil Dünyası" managed to bring her into the spotlight with hits that include, "Kek" and "XL". Two years later, Nil managed to follow up with another album called, "Nil FM" which also managed to see similar success as that of her first album. Some of the hit singles released from that album include, "Gitme Yoksa…", "Akbaba", "Ben Aptal Mıyım?" and "Bronzlaşmak" as well.

In 2006, Nil would go on to release her 3rd album called, "Tek Taşımı Kendim Aldım". The album managed to bring Nil with some further success with hits including, "Pırlanta", "Peri" and of course, "Organize İşler Bunlar" which is the original soundtrack of the movie Organize İşler. All of the three singles from this album managed to easily top most Turkish charts, which is quite a success considering that the Turkish music industry is a quite competitive one.

In late 2006, Nil released a single called, "Yaş 18" (Age 18) which is one of the two tracks she recorded for the soundtrack of the Turkish movie Sınav (Exam). Both the movie and the song deal with the pressure Turkish students face preparing for matriculation, as well as angst from coming of age.

Cartel de Santa is a Mexican band from the "barrio de la Aurora", Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, Mexico. The band started playing in 1996 as part of the Avanzada Regia musical movement and is currently composed of Eduardo Davalos de Luna, also known as MC Babo (lead vocals), MC Dharius, Rowan Rabia (beatmaker) and DJ Agustín (only in live shows).^[1] They have been referred to as one of the most notable Mexican hip-hop artists.^[2]

Cartel de Santa started playing in 1996, when MC Babo and some friends began by singing improvised rap songs.

The group became famous in 2003, when the band released its first self-titled album. The album includes hits such as "Perros", "Todas mueren por mi" and "La pelotona".^[3] The album was produced by Jason Roberts^[4] who had previously worked with artists such as Cypress Hill, Ice Cube, House of Pain, Guns N' Roses, Control Machete, and Plastilina Mosh. This contributed to the fame of the band.

That same year, the group released a video clip of the song "Perros". This video was broadcast across Latin America on MTV.^[5]

A year later, in 2004, a new album was released, Cartel de Santa, Vol. 2, which included hits as "Blah, blah, blah", "La llamada" and "El arte del engaño".^[3] Cartel de Santa Vol. 2 counted with the collaboration of other artists, such as Tego Calderón, in "Conexión Puerto Rico", and Mr. Pomel, in "Crónica Babilonia".

In 2007, Cartel de Santa recorded its third album, named Cartel de Santa, Volumen Prohibido. It included the singles "Cheka Wey" featuring female hip-hop artist Mery Dee. A few months after the album release, the lead vocalist, Babo, was arrested for the killing of a fellow band member. During a confrontation with Juan Miguel Chávez, an old rival, on the street, Babo shot a warning shot, which instead hit former band member Ulises. Eduardo Dávalos, Babo, turned himself in to the Ministerial Police of Nuevo Leon state.^[6] He later wrote a song about the incident while in prison in which he expresses his regret over the killing of Ulises. The band released a compilation album, Cartel de Santa, Greatest Hits, aimed at rising funds to be used to set the vocalist free. MC Babo was liberated from prison nine months later, with help of Sony Music,^[1] after the group paid about 130,000 pesos as bail.^[7]

In February 2008, the band released its fourth album, Cartel de Santa, Vol IV. Some of the songs recount Babo's memories during the months he was in prison. The album was meant as a message to fans that "el Cartel" would keep making music. The first single of this album was "Hay mamita" which also has a music videoclip.^[1]

In March 2010, Babo announced on the band's Myspace the release of another album. The fifth album was released in May 2010 with the name "Vol. V: Sincopa". Like their last work, Volume V showed a better sound and beats quality. Cartel de Santa was nominated for the Latin Grammys as a result of their new release.

Controversy[link]

In April 2007, El Babo turned himself in to Mexican police officials claiming that he accidentally shot and killed his fellow band member. While at a house in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, MC Babo learned that the group's driver was allegedly going to the home to settle a dispute, then he shot the driver, Juan Miguel Chavez Pimentel, El Micky, in the leg upon his arrival. El Babo claimed that one of the shots from his .38 revolver ricocheted off of the floor and killed his friend Ulises 'Buenrostro',^[8] the matter is still under police investigation.^[9]

On January 2008, el Babo was released from Jail after 9 months of incarceration, after the group paid a bail of about 130,000 pesos.^[7]

Rocío Dúrcal (October 4, 1944 – March 25, 2006), born as María de los Ángeles de las Heras Ortiz, was a Spanish singer and actress, known artistically as Rocío Dúrcal. She is the best-selling Spanish solo artist to date with more than 80 million records sold.

Dúrcal was born in the working class district of Cuatro Caminos, Madrid (Spain). She was the daughter of Tomás de las Heras and María Ortiz. She was involved in much of the domestic chores, and helped in raising her younger siblings, thus missed classes at school.

Ever since she had begun primary school, she always wished for a career as an actress, a fact which remained secret for a while. Meanwhile, at school recess, the future artist had her first audience with her classmates, who asked her to sing. Later her presence in school as a singer became common. Although her parents supported her talent, they did not want it to become her career. After completing primary education, she worked as an apprentice hairdresser in her neighborhood.

She began her artistic career by participating in various festivals and competitions radio song, which was secretly supported by her paternal grandfather who always believed in her talent and was her first fan. At 15 years old (1959), with the approval of her parents, participated in a television program. She sang a traditional song "La Sombra Vendo". But near the TV station in which she performed, Luis Sanz, a "talent seeker" of Madrid, who saw the program, was impressed by her talent and personality, so much so that Sanz had contacted the program to request the name and address of the young contestant. The conversation between Luis Sanz, who was already representative of several famous Spanish artists, and her parents, was decisive for her future. For the first time in her life, the future star spoke of her artistic aspirations and her desire to get into the hands of Mr. Sanz, who wanted to launch her into stardom.

The parents of María de los Ángeles were at first undecided about what they should do. Within a week, they gave their approval to the employer. While the future artist insisted, her parents feared the failure of their daughter. This, of course, did not occur. Sanz decided that the girl was placed in the care of private tutors to complete her secondary education and begin singing, dancing and acting. All this happened, ensuring that future Rocío Dúrcal did not lose her personality, which delighted the employer. At the same, Sanz puts her in contact in various social events with the famous artists of his time and even some beginners in the art such as Raphael and the now deceased and contemporary, Rocío Jurado, and famous of the time Camilo Sesto who became a good friend.

Her name would be inappropriate to launch her into stardom, and so Sanz decided in calling her Rocío. In a television interview before her death Rocío said that, that nickname was placed by her grandfather. Thus, Sanz must have picked the name of that family tradition. But, thinking that she would need a "last name", he and María de los Ángeles looked onto a map of Spain, in which she drew at random, the municipality of Dúrcal, in the province of Granada. Finally her name was born, Rocío Dúrcal, which won its way into posterity. Later, she was declared Adoptive Daughter of this town and a street was named in her honor. There is currently a project to create a museum about the artist, on February 14, 2009, in the town of Dúrcal, a statue in her honor was unveiled, a shared project between her husband, the singer Antonio Morales "Junior", and the council of that village. At the age of 17 she was offered a role in Canción de Juventud. After acting in several films she married Filipino singer Antonio Morales (a.k.a. Júnior), a member of the Pop group Los Brincos. In 1975, after having two of her three children, she retired from the film industry and in 1977 re-launched her singing career. Dúrcal recorded the first of several albums of Mexican ranchera music produced by Juan Gabriel which sold millions of records in Mexico, Spain, the U.S. and the rest of Latin America. She then recorded a Mexican music album with Marco Antonio Solís, with similar success.

In 2001, Rocío Dúrcal was diagnosed with uterine cancer. In 2004, her doctors discovered a malignant lesion (abnormal cancerous tissue) in her lungs, which was treated with chemotherapy. The cancer later metastasized (spread of cancer cells) to her brain. After a lengthy battle with cancer, Dúrcal died at her home in Torrelodones, Madrid on March 25, 2006. Her ashes were divided in halves and currently rest in Madrid and Mexico City.

Her style has influenced many female mariachi and ranchera singers from Mexico as well as the Hispanic community of the United States.

Rocío Dúrcal has sold more than 80 million records worldwide.

For her work as a recording artist, Durcal was inducted into the Paseo de las Luminarias in Mexico City. Her daughter, Shaila, is also a singer.
