► Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is a shinto shrine, located just outside Fukuoka. (15-20 minutes by Omuta Line from Fukuoka Tenjin Station). Todays version of the shrine dates back to 1591, although the first - and smaller version of it - was built in year 905.
It has been classified "Important Cultural Property" by the Agency of cultural affairs of Japan.
The shrine area is really beautiful, with several ponds, ume- and sakura-trees, blooming from February until late april. - In my opinion, its the best shrine/temple in Fukuoka, and a "must see" when visiting Kyushu.

“When the east wind blows, let it send the fragrance, ume blossoms, even though your master is gone, do not forget the spring.” A plum tree at the shrine is said to have flown all the way to Dazaifu in Kyushu, following Michizane after he was demoted and sent to live there ... In 903, the ill-fated Michizane died at the age of 59 in Dazaifu ... The spot became Michizane’s grave, and Dazaifu Tenmangu was later built there....
