Egypt: Morsi, the military and media
Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's president, has been in the job for less than a month, but has already found himself caught up in a battle with the country's state media. The power struggle between the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and President Morsi is being played out in the front pages of the country's newspapers and on its television screens. Private media outlets, which have taken off since the fall of Hosni Mubarak, are growing in numbers and becoming more opinionated than ever. State-owned media meanwhile have been accused of favouring the military over their new leader. In this week's News Divide, we look at the stand-off between Egypt's new civilian administration and a state-owned media that continues to be influenced by remnants of the old regime. This week's News Bytes: In Moscow, authorities charge a former policeman in connection with the murder of prominent Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya; WikiLeaks claims victory in a court battle against a US financial firm that imposed a blockade against the whistle-blowing site; and an Ethiopian court hands out tough sentences against six journalists in what critics are calling a blow to press freedom in the country. Political street art When you think of social media, you are likely to think of computers, mobile devices and sites like Facebook or Twitter. But there is one form that pre-dates it all - street art. Street art came before television, radio and the printing press and remains a powerful tool of ...

North Korea threatens United States as its SWORN ENEMY and threatened Nuke War
www.cnn.com Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea said Thursday that it plans to carry out a new nuclear test and further long-range rocket launches, all of which it said are a part of a new phase of confrontation with the United States. The North's National Defense Commission said the moves would feed into an "upcoming all-out action" that would target the United States, "the sworn enemy of the Korean people." Carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency, the defense commission statement followed a United Nations Security Council resolution on Tuesday that condemned North Korea's recent rocket launch and expanded existing sanctions. Richardson explains North Korea trip North Korea, which often issues bellicose statements in its state media, said Thursday that it rejected all Security Council resolutions concerning it. It described this week's resolution as "the most dangerous phase of the hostile policy toward the DPRK," using the abbreviated version of its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Just before the North sent out its hostile statement, a US State Department official was telling reporters in Seoul that Washington hoped that Pyongyang wouldn't carry out another nuclear test. "It would be a mistake and a missed opportunity if they were to do it," said Glyn Davies, the US special envoy on North Korea. "This is not a moment to increase tension on the Korean peninsula." North Korea has carried out two previous nuclear tests, in 2006 and ...

Zhu Ruifeng whistleblower - China Take - January 31,2013 - BONTV China
Go to bon.tv to watch the full episode Zhu Ruifeng is the name of the blogger behind the anti-corruption website 'Supervision by the People'. The former journalist has hit the headlines recently with his release of videos exposing a number of Chongqing local government officials in compromising situations with young women. According to state media, the women were hired by a property developer to seduce the men and secretly film them having sex. The tapes were then used to blackmail the officials into granting generous property deals. When one of these officials - Lei Zhengfu -- went to the police they arrested the developer and the gang that helped him, detained the women and confiscated the tapes. The officials however were left alone. Then Zhu managed to get hold of copies of the videos -- he says from a source within the Chongqing police - and uploaded one to the internet. This starred the very Lei Zhengfu who appealed to the police. He was promptly sacked. State media has reported that 10 more Chongqing officials have been fired for allegedly appearing in similar videos. But this week Zhu said he has come under pressure from Chongqing police to hand over his evidence. He says police questioned him for seven hours on Monday and said he could be liable for prosecution if he didn't surrender the tapes. However Zhu says he refused to do so to protect his source.

China News - December 20, 2012: Wang Lijun Exposé, Offensive Dumpster Sign
In today's NTD China News, an exposé on Wang Lijun published by the Southern Weekly magazine has been widely popular, with reports it's now been recalled. Chung Ting-pang, a Taiwanese Falun Gong practitioner abducted in the mainland earlier this year has testified at a US congressional hearing in Washington DC. The government in Bijie city of Guizhou province sparked fresh outrage, after it posted signs on dumpsters warning people and animals not to enter. It comes after five local boys died in a dumpster in November, after they climbed in to keep warm. A Chinese trade delegation has pledged to curb software piracy by state-owned firms, after a two-day trade meeting with US officials. VPN service providers have reported that their servers are being blocked in China. State-run media says foreign providers are not legally allowed to operate without registration, denying the regime has stepped up internet censorship. More Chinese netizens say they trust information on Weibo, rather than state-run CCTV. It's December 21st, 2012 in China. So far, all is well on the last day on the Mayan calendar. China Focus - In China, an Appropriate Level of Corruption
A recent editorial in China's fiery state-run Global Times argued that corruption in China is a widespread problem that is hard to eliminate completely, and therefore citizens should accept an "appropriate level" (适度) of corruption. The article sparked anger and heated debate among Chinese netizens. It even provoked a rebuttal from Xinhua, another state-run media. What exactly did the Global Times argue? And why has it sparked such a broad reaction? For more news and videos visit ➡ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ➡ http & twitter.com Add us on Facebook ➡ on.fb.me

China Focus - Citizen Journalists in China
When you hear "journalist in China," what do you think of? A reporter for state-run media? Someone who works for a major international news organization? Or a citizen journalist trying to skirt censorship? If you're the latter type of journalist, you face more than just censorship. You could face long prison terms and even torture. Especially if you breach a politically sensitive topic at a politically sensitive time. That's what happened to self-taught Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen, who was recently given an International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists. We sit down with Madeline Earp, senior Asia researcher for CPJ, to talk about his case, and what it's like for citizen journalists in China today.

China News - "Foreign Forces" Blamed for Anti-Censorship Protest: China News Broadcast, January 8, 2013
In today's NTD China News, Chinese state-run Global Times blames "foreign forces" for the escalating anti-censorship protests over an editorial printed by Southern Weekly. The Chinese regime has retracted a report that it would abolish the notorious labor camp system this year. Instead, state-run Xinhua reported on Monday that reforms would be carried out. Chinese activist Zhu Zhengzhi has been placed under secret detention, a measure now legal under Chinese law. Zhu called for an investigation into the death of Li Wangyang, a 1989 Tiananmen Square protestor who was found hanging inside a hospital room in June, 2012. Japan has filed a complaint after four Chinese ships were found in waters near the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu islands for 13 hours between Monday and Tuesday. Shanxi's acting governor, Li Xiaopeng, is in hot waters after city-level officials covered-up two major incidents over the past two weeks. A joint research by the Peking University and Greenpeace has found that more than 8500 people died in four major Chinese cities last year from air pollution. A ice sculpture of Korean pop star Psy, in his famous "Gangnam Style" pose, has attracted scores of tourists during the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival. China fireworks truck blast causes highway collapse
A truck carrying fireworks has exploded on an elevated highway in central China, killing at least five people and causing part of the road to collapse, state media report. The blast, which destroyed an 80m (262ft) section of road, took place on the G30 expressway in Henan province. China National Radio had put the number of dead at 26 but the report appeared to have been removed from websites. Several vehicles were reported to have tumbled off the road.

Police Brutality Worse than Rodney King - The Robert Leone Story
Dashcam of BRUTAL beatings by cops after stopping the wrong man. Pennsylvania State Police pursued Robert for a MINOR traffic violation that he apparently DID NOT commit. While Robert was detained he was nearly killed by the police while they executed their form of street justice. He suffered through 11 hours of multiple beatings. He was tasered at least 10 times. He was also chemically maced. He spent more than 2 1/2 years in JAIL. Robert was charged with felony assault on a police officer because the officer broke his hand when he punched Robert in the head with his fist while he was being detained! This is part of a BIGGER story of police brutality, corruption, and official coverup throughout the Pennsylvania judicial system. This video is chapter one of this story - visit worsethanrodneyking.com to watch this story unfold and to participate in the discussion. After I released this video it quickly went viral. The reaction to this video has been a public firestorm of protests and demands for investigations - and yet the police involved are still on the street. They have NOT been punished in any way. Sadly, not a single politician has taken a stand by publicly speaking up. You are the key. The officials in Bradford County Pennsylvania will do nothing. Only public reaction will get results - so please "like" my Facebook page and participate in the discussion! PLEASE WATCH IN HD FULL SCREEN w/SOUND. It is a much better viewing experience. Hopefully you have a 1080P monitor and good connection. If not, bug a friend or colleague that does. It is worth it.
Landscapes: Volume 2 is the second of a three part series. Every frame of this video is a raw still from a Canon 5D2 DSLR and processed with Adobe software. In Volume 2 I again show off my beautiful home state of Arizona and I also made several trips to Utah. This video has some iconic landmarks that we have seen before. I felt that showing them again with motion controlled HDR and/or night timelapse would be a new way to see old landmarks.
Sales Pitch: I would now have to say that my timelapse skill set is very complete. The amount of knowledge I have gained through research, testing, and shooting experience is astounding. From moon phases to high dynamic range to motion control rigs to noise reduction, you would have a tough time finding someone with more overall knowledge of timelapse. If you need help with your next timelapse project you can reach me at 888-444-2739 or DustinF@crewwestinc.com
Most of the motion control for this video was done with the Stage Zero Dolly by Dynamic Perception. Once I got comfortable using the DP dolly I fell in love. I can set up shots now in much shorter times. More importantly for me, it is much smaller and much more portable than my homemade motion control. Without it, shots like the Delicate Arch shot in Utah would be nearly impossible due to the length of the hike. Buy the Stage Zero Dolly if you are looking for quality, inexpensive, easy-to-use motion control. http://dynamicperception.com/
In addition to the Stage Zero, I also used a three axis motion controlled CamTram. The CamTram is the most versatile dolly I have ever used. Its applications are only limited by your creativity. The CamTram has virtually no weight limit. I was able to achieve shots that dolly-in with the camera just over the ground because of the CamTram's ability to hold heavy counter weights.

INSPIRATION:
This video is inspired, in part, by the ideas explored in David Deutsch’s new book, THE BEGINNING OF INFINITY. We hope it moves you.
"The topographical shape and the material constitution of the upper surface of the island of Manhattan, as it exists today, is much less a matter of geology than it is of economics and politics and human psychology. The effects of geological forces were trumped (you might say) by other forces — forces that proved themselves, in the fullness of time, physically stronger. Deutsch thinks the same thing must in the long run be true of the universe as a whole. Stuff like gravitation and dark energy are the sorts of things that determine the shape of the cosmos only in its earliest, and most parochial, and least interesting stages. The rest is going to be a matter of our own intentional doing.." - David Alpert on David Deutsch's new book.
"Some time in the last fifty thousand years, with the invention of culture, the biological evolution of humans ceased and evolution became an epigenetic, cultural phenomenon... technology is the real skin of our species. Humanity, correctly seen in the context of the last five hundred years, is an extruder of technological material. We take in matter that has a low degree of organization; we put it through mental filters, and we extrude jewelry, gospels, space shuttles. This is what we do. We are like coral animals embedded in a technological reef of extruded psychic objects." - Terence Mckenna
**
In our work, we use the tools of editing: we juxtapose 'transcalar' imagery, cutting and overlapping the very small and the very large... From the nano to the galactic, stretching and compressing time, we feature time lapse to reveal the repetitive and recurring patterns across different scales of reality. The aim is to provide multiple perspectives all at once, whose simultaneous presentation might cause spontaneous epiphanies. “These patterns are omnipresent, but only when we see these patterns in a more compressed mode of presentation to we start to attend to them as such.” -- This is KEY!
Paul Stamet's superb book, Mycelium Running, begins with a discussion of what Stamets calls the mycelial archetype. He compares the mushroom mycelium with the overlapping information-sharing systems that comprise the Internet, with the networked neurons in the brain, and with a computer model of dark matter in the universe. All share this densely intertwingled filamental structure.
A recent profile of Stephen Johnson on Dumbo Feather described his work like this:
“Johnson uses ‘The Long Zoom’ to define the way he looks at the world—if you concentrate on any one level, there are patterns that you miss. When you step back and simultaneously consider, say, the sentience of a slime mold, the cultural life of downtown Manhattan and the behaviour of artificially intelligent computer code, new patterns emerge."
On their own, these areas of study are fascinating. Together, a more profound view takes shape.
The article continues, "Put simply: cities are like ant colonies are like software is like slime molds are like evolution is like disease is like sewage systems are like poetry is like the neural pathways in our brain. Everything is connected.”
PERFORMING PHILOSOPHY:
Our stated goal is to re-ignite the art of the "performing philosophers" ... like Timothy Leary and Buckminster Fuller... A post on Space Collective wrote about “thinkers who act as substantial agents of change, who drastically alter the infocologies they interact with, in the process transforming and meshing the different dimensions in which our minds operate.”
We care about the pleasures derived in forming new connections, mash-ups and innovative solutions for the next step in human evolution.
We are working to articulate our understanding through the creation of recombinant media mashups meant to epiphanize audiences----the creating and sharing of awe; "performance philosophy" in an age of collapsing boundaries and exponential creativity.
The director of the Imaginary Foundation described our work as “some kind of Ontological DJ'ing, recompiling the source code of western philosophy by mixing and mashing it up into a form of recombinant creativity, which (hopefully) elevates our understanding from the dry and prosaic, into the sensual and transcendent.”
“The goal is to prove a fresh framework and a new narrative to fill our old storytelling needs in our ever-increasing process of self-description

NEX FS 100 Video Blog
This is a Worldwide Exclusive.
Not only did I contribute to the design of this camera but we managed to get a prototype and shoot a music video a few weeks ago. I believe we are the first independent team to shoot anything with the NEX FS100.
When I got the call we were told we could have the camera for a little over 24hrs.
We wanted to do more than just simply test it. But also we wanted to see what we could get out of the camera with stock lenses and recording internally.
So James from www.hangmanstudios.com teamed up with Den from www.fstopacademy.com and we pulled off this amazing shoot in 48hrs. Needless to say we didn't get much sleep but we valued the opportunity and wanted to shoot as much as we could in as many environments as we could.
We especially wanted to push the low light capability and use the in camera media. It shoots to SD cards, Sony Memory sticks and also has a 128GB FMU which is a solid state pack that integrates with the camera and will give up to 10 hrs record time at 24mb/s AVC HD.
We shot everything at 24mb/s AVC HD and ingested into FCP and transcoded to ProRes 422 using Log and transfer.
Shot over a 36 hr period in one weekend on one of only 2 prototype NEX FS 100 Cameras in the world.
We used 3 lenses:
A Sony Alpha 50mm f1.4 with alpha to emount adaptor
A E mount 16mm f2.8
The Stock lens 18-200 f3.5-5.6
For more information on the camera you can go here http://www.sony.co.uk/biz/content/id/1237480587665?en_GB=

Fireworks Truck Explodes On Bridge in Central China (Video)
Five people have been killed after an explosion on a truck carrying fireworks caused a road bridge to collapse in central China. The blast happened on the Yichang Bridge in Henan Province, injuring another eight people, according to state media. Photographs posted on social media showed at least one large truck lying on its side way below the highway. Another photograph showed what appears to be a remarkable escape for other drivers with at least one vehicle seen balancing on the edge of the bridge. Earlier, it was reported that as many as 26 people were killed. According to a spokesman from Henan Transport Bureau, five to six vehicles fell from the bridge. Details of exactly what happened are not clear but witnesses say they saw the truck explode and "about 10" cars blown off the bridge by the blast. The Yichang Bridge forms part of a busy multi-lane highway in central China. Local media reports claim that the south side of the bridge collapsed completely and cracks have appeared on the northern carriageway. If the details of the cause are confirmed to be correct, then the incident combines two tragically common themes in China: badly constructed bridges and an abundance of badly regulated fireworks. Annually, fireworks form a central part of Chinese New Year which this year falls next weekend. To a far greater extent than in Europe or America, revellers use fireworks to celebrate, sometimes paying little attention to safety. A spate of accidents over many years has ...

China Focus - Jiang Zemin's Mysterious Reappearance
China Focus has moved to a new channel, Be sure to subscribe to www.youtube.com Retired former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin has mysteriously re-appeared. He showed up in a photo in state-run media on October 19—ten days after it was taken during his meeting with the head of a small-time university in Shanghai. Now netizens and China analysts alike are talking about what it means that Jiang's photo was published in state-run media, and why it was published now. Jiang officially stepped down from his position as ruler of the Communist Party in 2002. But he still has a lot of influence behind the scenes. Until recently though, the 86 year old was in such poor health that many thought he was on the verge of death. But is his reappearance just because of the upcoming power transition? Or is there more at stake?

Media Mayhem - ABC's Martha Raddatz on the White House, Iraq, Cheng Guangcheng & Female Journalists
EPISODE SYNOPSIS: Having spent years as the White House and Senior Foreign Correspondent for ABC News, Martha Raddatz is one of the most recognizable faces in American journalism. She shared with us some of her esteemed insight via skype for today's show. We cover the most recent developments in the Chinese dissident scandal, her take on the Iraq war--both there and here in the states--and what really goes into being assigned to cover the White House. GUEST BIO: Martha Raddatz was named Senior Foreign Affairs correspondent for ABC News in November 2008, after serving as White House correspondent during the last term of President George W. Bush's administration. In addition to covering the day to day foreign and domestic stories from the White House, Ms. Raddatz has traveled from Haiti to Yemen to the Mideast and through south Asia. Raddatz traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan dozens of times, and to Iraq 21 times to cover the ongoing conflict. She was on the last convoy out of Iraq and she is the only television reporter allowed to cover a combat mission over Afghanistan in an F15 fighter jet, spending nearly 10 hours in the air on two separate missions. In the early hours of June 8, 2006, she was the first correspondent to report that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, had been killed in a US air strike north of Baghdad. In 2011, Raddatz reported exclusive details on the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. That same year she had an exclusive interview on ...
